Why did you decide to buy a Subaru?

I’m an active and outdoorsy guy and I wanted something practical (wagon), AWD and fun to drive. I had always loved the look of the late 90’s subaru’s and knew they offered me everything on my “must have” list.

I was originally lined up to purchase a 1998 dark forest green outback (which looking back I sort of wish I did) but made the mistake of checking kijiji and spotting the RedWrex. The outback was right on budget, while the WRX was double my budget. I told myself there is no harm in test driving it and being the reasonable and financially prudent person that I am, I would definitely buy the 1998 outback anyway. Sigh. The moment I test drove the WRX, I knew I had to get it. Coming from a background of trucks, no car I had ever driven had given me that level of driving experience. I loved the aggressive look of it, loved the hood scoop, loved the turbo. I was hooked.

I walked out of the dealership with the keys in hand.

What makes your Subaru special?

Well, simply put, it's special because it's mine. It's been with me for 7 years. We've travelled over 130k Kms together. Driving to 100's of ski trips on some of the WORSED days to be on the road (best days to ski). With the addition of a hitch, I even hauled all my possessions to Halifax when I moved there for work, and then she survived the trip back… probably pulling too much weight but never complained and just took it. We've survived 5 heart transplants. We've hit the ditch together, and then drove right out. Then drove back in to tie a tow cable and haul a couple trucks out, all while sporting a itshay eating grin. In short, we've got so many memories together.

What has made you stick with Subaru even though you’ve had so many engines?

Not knowing when to fold’em. I play poker the same way. I'm a terrible poker player.

In all seriousness, it's a long and weird story, plagued with bad luck and weird plot twists. I've always loved the car and didn't want to get rid of it. I was naively overly attached to it, and with every reoccurring issue and bad luck, I just kept telling myself “this is probably the last one, I’m sure of it”, and “well, since I know I’ve replaced XYZ part in it, at least I know it work blow again”, and the most precise definition of naiveté “with the new engine, she’s like a new car”.

What plans do you have for the car?

Keep it. No sell it. Nah love to drive it so I’ll keep it. But I hate looking at it, so I’ll sell it. I don’t know.

Things on the to do list are:

I want wider rims. I’ve currently got 17x 8” OZ Ultraleggerra’s, but I’d like to go with something 17 or 18 by 9”, or maybe 9.5”.

To fit those on a wagon I’ll need flares. I’ve already got a sedan front end which I need to Prep, sand, prime and paint and install. Then I need to buy, prime and paint rear fender flares. I’ve also recently purchased some Bilstein Coilovers that will be installed next spring.

Once I’ve finally gotten rid of the reverse rake look, I think I’ll be happy with her. The whole front end will have had a refresh with a coat of paint and I’m pretty sure I’ll be happy with it. Performance wise, I’m very happy with it and truth be told, anything more would just be asking for trouble.

Speaking of trouble, I may try Meth.

Are you involved in any motor sports? If so, which ones?

I’m involved in that motorsport where every time you race you blow an engine. Its great fun. You should all check it out.

Oh and on leap years I Autocross.

In all seriousness, I really enjoy autocross and I wish I could race more and get better. Maybe next year. I’m looking forward to patching up the 93 Civic Si we ran this year and getting back to the track next year.

What was your very first car?

1984 Nissan Datsun 720 truck. She was a beauty. Google it.

What is your drink of choice?

Scotch. More specifically, Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban. If I could, I’d drink it every day and pair it with a Romeo and Juliet #2 cigar.

What music do you like to listen to?

That band, whats it called again, its always playing when I’m driving my wagon. Something something Subaru Rumble. J Oh and stuff like Black Keys, The Foo Fighters, Alabama Shakes. Ie: Alternative, Blues, Folk, Rock.
