Come out and enjoy bonfires, music, beer gardens, BBQ and much more at the Bourgeau Base area

Got a response from Sunshine already!

"Hi James,

I have attached a pricing guide to help you out. Our minimum for group rates is 15 people. We have several options for group lunches, I have attached the menu to our most popular group lunch. You can also purchase drink tickets or open food vouchers. These will be collected by our staff and you will only be charged based on the amount of tickets received/food and drinks given.

We have snowshoeing available for anyone who may not be interested in skiing or snowboarding. There is a hotel up on our mountain as well. There are many places to grab a bite to eat, sit by the fire, and take in the views. We do offer gondola only lift tickets for anyone that would like to go up to our village and hang out in our lodge.

We offer bus services if you would like to travel all together and save on some gas. They can pick you up from any address in Calgary, Red Deer, or Edmonton.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have. I hope this helps!"

So now we have some options for what we'd like to do, the group rate is not much of a discount than their typical day pass.
I do like that they offer some other activities such as snow shoeing which my wife might like as she doesn't ski/board.
Will need 15 people to qualify for the group rate.

Also I cannot post the PDF's on here as they are over the allowable size limit, I can email them possibly or if a Moderator can grant permission to post them here?

If anybody is interested in just getting cheap passes, if you know somebody who goes to SAIT, you can get full day lift passes for around $65 or $70.
What is the discount for a group rate?

Brochure say Adult 18+ $95.00 and their regular rate is $99.00... ???
I will see if they can do any better but I think you can get the Costco one for cheaper than what they are offering.
Heck, if someone on here has access to that 65-75 rate for everyone I say we make our own plans.

I have asked if they can offer a better price point for the group and compared the day pass price to the group rate and even the individual student rates. It is not that enticing to be honest to go as a group but I will wait until they respond. Seems odd that they would offer such a poor group rate when you could potentially bring in a lot of people who will spend $ at their concessions etc.

Thanks for all the legwork Jimpreza111!

I'd have to say Costco is definitely cheaper, I think last year it was about 215ish for a 3-ticket booklet which works out to ~72/day (at Sunshine). If any of you are planning to go to Sunshine or Louise more than 4 times this year I would recommend their respective "Plus Cards" which cost $99-109 up-front but days 1,4,7 are free and you get $20-25 off every other day you use it making a regular day ticket ~75 depending on the mountain you're at. Basically, you pay full price for day 1 and you get 2 free days out of it if you go 7 times and you get discounted rates off every other day you use it. They also work at a few other mountains in BC for anybody who travels around in the winter. Here are the links:

https://www.skilouise.com/louise_cards.php
http://www.skibanff.com/liftpasses/sunshine-marmot-card/

For anybody who goes often I'd say this is the most feasible option otherwise if you're only going once or twice a year Costco is the way to do it.
Title: Re: Western Subaru Club - Ski/Snowboard Trip to Sunshine
Post by: Player One on November 02, 2016, 10:40:01 AM
It looks like the play is to do it separately from their offering. $4 discount? Really?
I will likely just buy the Sunshine Marmot card and I assume there will be a few others who will have done this as well.
Once we get numbers, I think the best bet would be to see if some of the SAIT (not sure if it's available at NAIT or other colleges/universities around) students to see how many passes they can get and the remainder group up to get the Costco booklets.
Title: Re: Western Subaru Club - Ski/Snowboard Trip to Sunshine
Post by: Jimpreza111 on November 02, 2016, 10:49:24 AM
Latest from the group booking team is:

"The lift tickets to cost less the more you buy. For 15-49 people it is $90, and for 50-249 people it is $86, and if you want to bring more than 250 people we can go from there.

Student and Costco lift passes are not sold through our groups department, and they buy in large amount of bulk so they are dealt with differently than our group trips."

Don't think we'll round up 250 people, lol. We could hit the $90.00 rate easily enough.
As thedude says it might be better to go the Costco or Plus Card route.
Personally I have some time off between Christmas and New Years where I could get the use out of the Costco one and still have a pass for this trip left over.

Let's start with a date that is workable for everyone interested. Should we do it on a weekend or during the week?
Weekends can be pretty busy there but are easier access for working stiffs. I am not opposed to a week day and would just book a day off work.
Once we have a time table we can start a head count.

I'm in as well.

After many many years of organizing smaller groups of between 5-30 people, I have come to the conclusion that AMA, student university discounts, and Costco are the ways to go ticket-wise. Let everyone get their own, and just plan the drive there/hangout. I'm willing to help on that if you are interested in extra help.

Awesome, I appreciate the offer Markkas!
It appears that the best deals to be had are going to be individuals taking care of their own day passes in whichever method they choose.
I'm going to post a poll that will gauge participation and offer some optional dates and we'll go with the most popular option.
If it's not too much trouble for everyone it would be cool to have a pre-meetup and cruise into Banff/Sunshine together early.
Opportunity for group pictures, possibly lunch etc.

I would suggest an Edmonton pre-meet approx 30 mins before the scheduled departure time at a tims or similar. Group pictures my be difficult due to the lack of light early in the mornings. Another stop just outside of Calgary (maybe at the Petro Can) would be an easy spot for us to grab all the Calgary Area folk (And they can meet 30 mins before our scheduled arrival time), but ultimately I think any "meets" along the way other than that will be a waste of time.
A post-ski group picture would most likely be the best thing to do. We can find a few good areas for a big group photo. Dinner is something that can also be arranged if people are spending the night.

No worries! However, I do have a comment about the poll.

I feel like we have enough interest already. I'd look at a total of 10-15 cars - but either way, numbers will always change very last minute. I think right now we need to focus on a date for the trip. I'd start off with a poll general timelines of when we should go.

Ex.

A) November 4th - December 16th
B) December 17th - December 31st
C) January
D) February
E) March - Close

As mentioned in the other thread, I'm in if it's on a weekend, definite maybe if it's on a weekday.
Preference for me would be in the new year as the snow before then can be hit or miss.

Historically the first and second week of January have had the best snowfalls (aside for most of February). If I was going for best chances of good snow, I'd plan for one of those weeks.

Wow what a great deal they offer for groups. The management of Scumshine are a bunch of crooks. Anyone remember when they fired all their tenured staff and still sold full price tickets to customers for only two lifts running?

What a itsholeshay. That's just my .02 though.

Not sure if this is relevant but I thought I would reach out to Subaru of Canada. I was inquiring about the SOA brand ambassador programs and their badge of ownership that Subaru of Canada does not offer, I also wanted to see if maybe they would throw us some Subi swag for our Sunshine ski getaway. I literally just sent the email and don't expect much of a response but it would be cool if they kicked in a few tokens for our loyal members. :D

Speaking of reaching out to Subaru, if anyone has any contacts or is a significantly good contact at an Alberta based Subaru dealer, let me know. I am looking for a Subaru dealer to sponsor a big upcoming Edmonton-based event.

Back to the topic, I finally voted. I said later in the year just because I know my bank account will be hurting lol.

Hello All,

Thank you for participating in this vote and by popular demand it appears the weekend of Jan 14/15 is when we are going to plan this thing.
I hope those of you who voted differently will still be able to make this weekend as it would be awesome to have a big turnout!

Being that I have only ever attended 1 cruise/meet (2016 Sylvan Lake Cruise) I will be suggesting a similar type of "pre-meet" and cruise to this event.
These details we can hash out over the coming weeks but would like us to come to a solid plan before the Christmas/Holiday break.

My initial proposal:

Edmonton Folks:
May I suggest we all meet rather early on Saturday Jan 14th ~ 6:00am at Leduc Common by Tim Hortons in the parking lot.  5203 Discovery Way, Leduc, AB T9E 8N4
I will provide some Bulk containers of Tim's Coffee and selection of Donuts/Muffins for everyone.
IF we can hit the road by 6:30am that would be great!
We'll cruise south on HWY 2, around Stoney Trail to the Tim Hortons at 5029 Nose Hill Dr NW #115, Calgary, AB T3L 0A2 (This is the furthest West Location I can find, open to other suggestions)
Going to say we get to this location by 9:00am

Calgary Folks:
Meet at Tim Hortons at 5029 Nose Hill Dr NW #115, Calgary, AB T3L 0A2 for 8:30am and hopefully someone on that end can coordinate breakfast or everyone fend for themselves.
Again I am suggesting this location as it is not too far from Stoney Trail has ample parking and is on the West Side.

Other Folks:
You can either meet at one of the two locations I mention above or show up at Sunshine around the same time as everyone else.

Once the group is together we make a dash for Sunshine Village at 9:15am-9:30am

Hoping if road conditions are favorable we hit the gates at Sunshine for 10:45-11:00am

Hit the slopes for a few hours and do a late lunch around 1:30ish in the Chalet. (Chance for group pictures??)

Get back on the slopes and everyone can stay as long as they wish before leaving, or we can have an Après-ski beer or something before either heading back home or to the hotel etc.

Would be awesome if some of our shutter bugs can take video or pictures before/during/after the day and post up here, I will be shooting a bunch and taking helmet video too.

Again these are all just "ideas" at this point so if you wish to contribute an alternate please do so.
Please also bring out some friends or fam that may wish to come.

Really looking forward to this and hope we can all make it!

Awesome, thanks for planning this and hopefully I can make it out that weekend, pretty excited!! Out of curiosity, how many people are thinking of staying the night? Just checked and the hotel right at Sunshine is sold out and likely very expensive anyways, but the inns in Banff are in the low $100s.

Thanks for organizing this so far. I don't know about others on here, but I would suggest that you get to Sunshine much earlier than 10:45-11:00. To me that's half the day gone, and i'm sure others would like to be there earlier as well. Make the most out of that lift ticket!

Also, with regards to this:

I would recommend that you stay in Banff over Sunshine 100%. It's only a 20 minute drive to the Sunshine parking lot from Banff, and to me it isn't worth the extra money to stay on the mountain. The Spruce Grove Inn is a place that i've used for years. It's towards the end of the strip, but they always offer great pricing - especially for groups. If there is enough interest, i'd look to them.

I agree with Markaas that we should be leaving Edmonton closer to 4:30AM so that we can get a full day of riding in.

I will most likely be staying the night and will be staying at the Inns of Banff, that is the only hotel I ever stay in while in Banff. I usually get the 3 or 4 bedroom condo but for one night I think a hotel room will do.

Awesome, I'll look into those two hotels and see if I can get a friend or even the gf if she's down to ski to split a room with me; if not maybe split with someone on here. I've stayed at the Ptarmigan a couple times and it's pretty decent too!

Great input guys, much appreciated.

We can scrap the whole "cruise to the mountain" portion but I am just trying to create a club themed day. I do agree we'd miss some portion of the day getting there that late and I have no issue starting out even earlier but I would like to make sure it's not too much trouble for everyone.
Essentially we could just all meet at Sunshine, find our own way there and just have fun on the mountain but it would be no different than everyone just going on their own on any given day.

Again if it's too much trouble to coordinate a cruise we can scrap it but I would still like to at least all meet at the same time.

Maybe my idea is too "idealistic" so please bring some suggestions/plans and lets see how we can all come to a consensus.

Well depending on how many people want a full day compared to a half day we could plan for two different cruises up.

One we could meet up at 4:00 and the other could meet up at the original time you suggested (6:00 I believe).

As for meeting up at Sunshine, we could still set a designated lunch time at say 1:00. That way whether you cruised up at 4:00, 6:00 or on your own time we could all still meet for a beer and get an afternoon of riding in together.

Again, these times are just suggestions but I have found on previous day trips that leaving the city around 4:00 gets you to Sunshine right on time for a full day of riding.

Not sure if it's reasonable, but Edmonton people coming down to Calgary on Friday and staying the night would shave ~3 hours of travel in the morning.

Also, the parking at sunshine is worth mentioning. The base of the mountain fills up quickly and there will likely be people parking roadside and taking the shuttle to the base. I know at most meets people like to park together so it may be worth seeing if sunshine could set up reserved parking or something

Good suggestion, I will see if I can wrangle some reserved parking. Their group rate was crap but maybe they'll offer up some parking at least if we come with a decent head count.

Again, I'm also fine with getting the E-town meet together at 4:00am too, we should be able to get to Calgary and then to Sunshine by like 8am. I do like the idea of staying the Friday night in Calgary but don't know if that would be an option for some if not most.

How about this:

E-town meet same location as above at 4:00am - departure around 4:15am as the roads should be pretty clear of traffic we'd make decent time to Calgary.

Calgary meet get's bumped up to 6:00-6:30am (at the same Tim's location) puts us at the mountain at 8:00ish

If we can get some reserved parking then anyone who may not want to get up this early can arrive at their leisure and still find the group.
Lunch can be done around 12:00pm in the Chalet- group pics and some group skiing/boarding can happen after that.

Not sure what time the hill closes so Après-ski beer can go say 5:00ish or at a time we can all agree upon during lunch.

I have not had any response from Subaru Canada yet, I may try and reach out to the local dealerships too.

I would also, if it's not too cheesy, try and find some type of arm bandy thing or something like a helmet decal branded with the WSC logo so it'll be easy to spot fellow club members on the slopes. Anyone know someone well enough in at a dealership or screen printing place that could get a deal on something like this?
Not looking to spend a ton of cash but I think it would be cool to at least have a souvenir for the occasion.

Lifts close at 4 during the winter months. 5 is a good time as we can plan a meeting place and just filter in throughout the afternoon.

Okay I am casting out a few lines for some swag and hopefully something comes through.
I have approached Subaru City/Rally Subaru to see if they would like to kick in a little something.
Awaiting a quote from Elite Sportswear on some custom printed velcro arm bands.
I have approached 8786 design to see if they do custom printing.
And finally I am going to see if I can pull some strings through work connections on custom promo stuff.

I will post up any findings I come across and see if anyone is interested in pitching in.

After approaching a few companies for screen printing etc and seeing some prices that made it not really enticing, I decided to try my hand at it.
Was out shopping at a liquidation warehouse and found some of these scarf thingys, bright colours and already in a loop.
Grabbed some t-shirt transfer paper from Staples and did a little copy pasting in MS Paint.
Voila, version 1.0 and I think it will suit it's purpose.

These will fit over a sleeve, leg or helmet and will help you to spot fellow WSC'ers on the mountain. May require some knotting to stay snug on a sleeve.
Going to make 40 of these for the trip and they are just a thanks for coming out from me.
If you want one personalized I can print your WSC handle on it but will only do by request.

Really looking forward to hitting the slopes with everyone!

Great idea with some solid execution :D I like it!

If for whatever reason I decide that my wallet is hurting just a little too much for this trip (which is very likely at this point as I am now looking at another ski trip right in the new year), I would be willing to shoot the entire event for everyone as long as I could tag along in someones car/multiple peoples' cars. Get some rollers, group photos, and individual photos for everyone.

I think now we are good on a date and beginning to have a plan lined up.
Next I would like to firm up the head/car count so I can approach sunshine about reserved parking possibly.
I will post another poll in here to get a rough idea of how many we have in attendance. Ask your friends/fam/other members who are not aware of the trip.
Poll will be up until Dec 9 and can be edited multiple times if something changes.

ALSO if you would like a personalized buff with WSC logo let me know, I will put your WSC name or guests name on them and it is no charge. Will also make some ones with just the logo above on them.
Just reply "Buff" and I will make one for you.

Please get your head count in before the poll closes and I will soon put together a final draft for the plans shortly.

You are all welcome and it's not much trouble at all. I sometimes enjoy doing artsy things with my free time and I figured this might make the day a little more enjoyable. After attending the Sylvan Cruise I recall some peoples names/faces but not all, figured it would doubly difficult to know who is who with ski gear on.  ::). Guess these could serve as a name tag of sorts if people wanted to have them personalized.

On another note I did receive a message back from Subaru City:

"Good afternoon James,
I am so happy to hear you are a part of the Western Subaru Club and I wish you a very successful and safe club cruise and ski trip to sunshine.
I have forwarded your email onto our parts manager, Mr. Doug Kroeker, as he usually handles this type of promotion.
Respectfully,
Ken Kruhlak"

Not sure if they will kick in anything but at least I know my message was received.   :D

I know we still have time to make plans and or commit/opt-out but I am hoping I can get a roster of all WSC members going by Christmas break.
That way I could actually get all attendees buffs personalized. I would like to print the names all in one shot or at least optimize the paper area in the printer.

What's up fellow WSC'ers

I'm putting a sign up sheet on Google doc's to get a better feel for who is going and how many, the polls on this site just do not suit this purpose well.
The sheet will only require a couple of seconds to fill out and I do not ask any personal info besides your first name and WSC name.
Not sure what the total number of people attending will be come January and I'd like to ensure there are enough Buffs to go around.

Currently Version #1 of the buff was actually a cut in half unit as I had bought 20 buffs (to make 40 units) only really considering an arm/leg/head band.
Since they are essentially a decent face cover when they are not cut up and whole I'm wondering if I should just leave them as one piece.
The material is cheap enough at $2/ea from the liquidation place and I would like to give out a decent quality memento.

So going forward I will take down the poll but will ask everyone to please sign up on the Google Doc if you are committed to attending.
As you sign up I will begin to compile and print the desired names on each one.

Sign up sheet here:

Sorry for all the gear shifting here but I wanted to summerize this effort in one screen without digging through this thread.
For those of you who have indicated that you are already coming please sign the sheet.

Polaris - I haven't considered doing an accommodations list for those that might want to stay overnight. Could be something worth looking into and I may be looking for a place if I have a few too many. Also would you like your buff personalized?

coop3422 - Buffs as in "Survivor" type thingys that I am making as a memento for the occasion.

Hello WSC'ers,

Couple of updates for everyone:

1) I have approached the Inn's at Banff to see if they will offer a decent discount for group rates on their rooms as I know people who have stayed here and said they are reasonably priced and a decent hotel. I will be receiving some information from them in an email today and will post up once I have that with regards to the discounted rate and restaurant/bar options. If the rates look decent we can possible set up a room sharing service if you are travelling alone to the ski day and don't want to pay full pop for the room on your own. I for one would be willing to share.

2) Current head count is ~10 as I have a couple of "outsiders" (Non WSC members) tagging along, the more the merrier.
If we can get an attractive (to the businesses in Banff) number of people we can really use that as a bargaining chip to get some better prices etc.

Things are starting to come together and I'm super stoked for this trip. My hopes are that everyone has a great time and we could make this an annual occurrence where we switch up the location each year. I really got a kick out of the cruise to Sylvan last summer and hope that is another gathering we can all enjoy each year. I have enjoyed being a part of this online community and would like to see it become more of a club where members can get together and maybe do some giving back to our local communities with food/clothing/toy drives etc at meets and such. After seeing the response from the club with regards to Kijho's poor doggy's issues I know we have a lot of kind hearts here. This is all an ideal currently and hope that we can all rally behind some good causes and get out from behind the keyboards more often. Maybe it's just the time of year getting to me but I think together we could make this a great club (not that it already isn't) and I would love to hear some feedback on taking on some charitable endeavors. Anyhow I'll conclude my ramblings now but again I can't wait for this trip and I hope we can all get together for some fun on the slopes! :D

This should be a pretty fun trip.

I already have my room booked at the Inns of Banff. I was originally planning on going out on the Friday and staying the weekend but I decided to just stay the Saturday night (cheaper and I will get to cruise up with everyone).

It ended up being $132 for a superior room (two queen beds, a balcony and a view) so fairly cheap.

Hello All,

New update as The Inn's at Banff have provided a quote for our group if we wish to secure room reservations for the Saturday night and will apply for 3days prior and post this date if you wish to extend your stay.
I threw a rough number at the request for pricing in terms of how many would be required so we may/may not meet this reservation number.
Please check out the link below to the quote.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwHWeseLtRSpVTNEeWp0WmwzdzQ/view?usp=sharing

If we generate enough interest in booking rooms then I will approach them to book and will cover the deposit and we can start a room booking sign up sheet, otherwise we can all make our own plans for accommodations or travel back to our homes.

Please review and let me know if you are interested in getting some accommodations as I have adjusted the sign up sheet to see if you are interested in staying the night in Banff.

$107, that's a pretty solid rate. I'll talk to the gf tonight. We still may hold off till we get back from vacation though.

I've taken a couple years off boarding due to injury (and general in-bad-shape-ness) but I'm thinking of joining up for this! I'll talk to my brother and make sure I have no gigs booked, this sounds like fun!

Awesome! Hope you can make it out.

I just saw the WSC Banner sticky for the meets threads and wonder if it would be worth bringing out that thing?
Maybe get it set up on some poles at the base of the hill by the ski rack at the chalet for a meeting area?
Would require permission from Sunshine and also finding out if the banner is still available from Zaider.

Yeah, I doubt that would be worth the effort.

New update with the Inns at Banff

I figured it might be hard to pre-book all the rooms and I have not yet received many people's intent to stay yet.
So I approached the Inns again and asked if we could book individually at our leisure but still keep a group rate.
Their response comprises 2 options:

Group Booking – we will set a group rate, hold a block of rooms, require a non-refundable deposit of $500, accept group payment for the final invoice, and a central organizer such as yourself will be responsible for working with our Groups Department to report the rooming list.   This works well for the Group Bookings.

Individual Booking – we will set a discounted rate, and each individual family or room calls in to book their room as part of the group booking. The payment would be collected individually by each room. No deposit is required for this method. We would not hold room inventory for this situation, so the families would need to be encouraged to book as soon as possible.

(With a $500.00 deposit, we would be happy to hold a room block with 21 day release)

I am leaning toward  and have requested the Individual Booking option as it is pretty hard to gain a consensus from everyone to book together and the longer we wait to book the less likely they will be able to have rooms available.

Once I hear back from them I will post any changes to the quoted pricing (if there are any) and a reference number for each of us to use when booking our rooms.

Small update here,

after toying with fonts and way to personalize the buff I had an idea pop into my head.
What if I used each attending member's car as a logo with their name in the windshield, somewhat like this.

Please let me know if I got your ride wrong as I was only going by what you have in your WSC profile currently.
I can still change it up but will need to know if this looks right, and I will try to improve the quality of the image but can only get this quality for free unless anyone has links to better quality free images.

My plan is to essentially stack the associated image from above onto the WSC ski trip logo I threw together for each member attending.

Let me know your thoughts or if you have an idea to improve this.

I will be staying and booking my room as per the group rate posted above.
Figure after a day on the mountain and a few visits to the beer gardens I might as well find a place to relax and knock back a few more.  >:D

Hey J.

I'm a fan of the simple username and WSC logo. That way if you say buy an STi your buff won't have to change ;) And with the material being stretchy I would imagine the car print would look funny.

Duly noted, I will give a car one a try (I'll try my one first) this weekend and post up the results, maybe get some feedback.
Of course I can just put the name on it for you if you wish.

Just bumping this thread because the day is fast approaching a we have 13 - 15 attendees signed up.
I believe the window to obtain the group rate on the hotel booking has passed for those of you who might have been interested.
It is not too late to sign up for the Subies at Sunshine.

I have some Buffs to finalize this week and will post up some pics of the finished products.
Will only be putting the WSC names on them as opposed to the car images as Gabe (diamondedge) mentions above about the fabric stretching issues.

I will put one question out to those who have signed up, do you have a favorite Font?
Here are a few examples (these are the only ones the WSC font face will let me use) but I am open to just about anything aside from Webdings/Wingdings and the like as it should probably be legible.

WSC - Impact
WSC - Times New Roman
WSC - Arial Black
WSC - Comic Sans

No probs if you have to drop out, life happens and we can't control that.
Just hoping we get to Sunshine with a few of us still on board.  ;D
I will consider the deadline for the personalized buffs as of end of day Friday Jan 6th as I will be making them this weekend.

I would absolutely love to do the names in the same font as the WSC logo or the WRC logo (which are eerily similar) but the closest I can find is one called Euphoric.

Could anyone point me to something similar or the correct font?

Lastly, should we proceed to do the cruise portion of this trip or just go to meet at Sunshine around 8-9am? With some of us dropping off I'm not sure it's entirely worth while but I would still be up for it. Would like to have a finalized plan by mid next week.

Edmonton area folks, that's a uckfaying EARLY drive from E-Town. Having the convoy is nice to have familiar-ish faces/cars around for what can be a boring, early morning drive. IMO since I'm a Calgary rider I have no qualms with meeting at the Calgary location for our cruise portion, if you can make it Jim, that's wicked, but I would understand if you don't.

Also, for printing, I would avoid serifed fonts for text. Just makes it more legible from a distance. (Sans serif is good basically)

My "maybe" will now have to be confirmed as a "not attending". I just can't justify spending any more money at this point. My Christmas break was expensive with trips to Vancouver, Whistler, and Revelstoke.

I will try my best to be on the list for the next one. Maybe we can do a reading week/spring trip after this one. I would LOVE to still get some sweet rolling shots of everyone's rides. Gotta expand that portfolio.

Sounds good, hoping if we can keep organizing meets/cruises/trips like this we can make them annual get together's.

I will still adhere to the initially proposed cruise schedule so anyone coming from Edmonton let's still do the EARLY meet at Leduc Common and we can hook up with the southern folk in Calgary.

**Edit** People on the sign up sheet seem to almost entirely be Calgary peeps so if RotaryMelon is still attending it will be a two car caravan from Leduc. I will however meet at the Calgary location before heading to Sunshine so here is my number in case things are getting close to departure time and I haven't made it to that location yet. 780-904-1117

Just scooped up a board mount for my "action cam" so I can shoot video from my ski tip, going to attempt a bunch of video for this trip from different perspectives. I rigged a pole mount for my ski poles but my helmet mount is busted, of course hand held is always an option. Hopefully get some action shots and vids of everyone and I will put together a video after it's all said and done.

So looking forward to hitting the mountains!

Still pretty soft and the weather was literally my version of perfect. -8, light breeze, sunny all day!

I found the snow to be pretty nice. There wasn't anything new but it has been cold enough to keep it from getting icy, the -8 yesterday was very tolerable.

I did have such a great time at Sunshine and am soo thankful for those of you who came out.

My crash into Gabe was instant Karma, it was a isspay poor attempt at snowing him which ended in me pretty much flipping over top of him. I have a lovely bruise surfacing on my right calf, not sure if it was the result of that incident or my "self destruction" on the 4th run of the day. Thankfully I have a massage appointment this evening, couldn't have timed that any better. I also learned to heed the advise of James, if he says "don't follow me unless you are very experienced" don't follow him. I think that was probably some of the most drastic terrain I have ever attempted and I did it, sideways and very slowly, but I made it down in 1 piece.

Also Romeo and Reid, it was great to meet you guys and hope we can do another one of these down the road.

Sorry we didn't link up with you thedude, was fairly busy there and without a direct communication it would have been hard to spot us.

Looking like I will have some time off in February due to a plant shutdown.
Thinking of making a return to Sunshine for the 16th and 17th as I would like to miss the long weekend rush, also my wife is attending the Garth Brooks concert on that Sunday and I am her DD while she gets day drunk with her friend.

Anyone down for another trip? This one won't necessarily be a WSC trip but if you are available and want to hit the slopes let me know.
I plan on skiing both days but it won't be another 3:00am wake up and drive, that killed me. :P

To answer your first question, yes. It does open when conditions allow.

As far as if it is ever worth it, I personally have not ridden it, but know people who have. Ultimately that is probably the best snow (when it's open) that you will get within that area (if you are too lazy to make your way to Golden or Revy), or if you don't want to pay heli/cat skiing prices. Your safety gear, tracker, and your training may be a little bit of a hassle to get if you're lazy, but obviously the things are beneficial.

When it comes down to it, the conditions need to be right, i'm sure it's a lot of fun. However, you need to be fully prepared as per sunshines safety standards to ride it, and in my opinion, I would rather just go cat skiing somewhere along the powder highway.

Well like, as a backcountry recreationalist, I already have the required gear and training, but that was kind of my point most of the time I'd rather just hike than pay $100, then on top of that the couloirs in whistler are USUALLY an awful sketchy entrance that everyone has plowed bare, followed by some mellow 40-50deg terrain with moderately ok ski conditions. Realistically, I'd rather wait till the hill on piste is going off, then I can ride 40-50deg terrain in moderate pow all day with no sketchy drop.
Not sure if I'm getting my question across or just rambling about how cool and extreme I am. Basically to have any EXTRA fun at all in whistler's equivalent (dropping gnarly chutes and couloirs with abandon) you have to hit it at the exact perfect time, right between when it's closed for bombing and when 50 people who should have stayed on a blue run have completely ruined it. Then usually you literally have to wait in line because every local trying to pump out a sponsor me video wants some in bounds big mountain skiing footy.

How often do you ski the backcountry? After taking my AST1 this weekend I'd like to get out and try it sometime in February if the conditions allow it. I'll be renting from UofC before making any big purchases buuuut I'd like to go with somebody who knows the area and knows what they are doing.

I grew up doing it, I have my AST1 and would very much like to do ast2. So far this season Ive been out 3 times, but relatively boring tours. Did Bow Summit (always fun, youll probably go here for your ast1) and up behind LL the north side of redoubt, the south face of redoubt ridge, and whatever you wanna call that pyramid peak that just north of the ski hill. Ive been trying to help my buddy train his dog to be a good backcountry ski partner.

I would not recommend halfway hut/skoki area because the goddamn skin in/out is awful. Built for XCers so its up down up down up down you almost have to skin out which is always terrible. Side note, anyone know if LL offers single ride lift tickets? because that would make this area much more accessible.
I have lost my regular ski buddy, so i am fully gung ho about meeting up to do some skinning, digging, slashing, etc. just lemmie know.
Ive also skiied fortress and a couple others but havent really found a great zone to ride thats relatively close to town.
If i could, Id take every friday off and do rogers pass once a week ugghhh.

Yep, at 120. Your comment was in response to a comment that said jimpreza got 6.5 l/100km on a trip between Banff and Calgary... I thought you were implying you got that mileage on a similar sort of trip. I can get under 10 in the city if I drive with a really light foot. I am always in [ S ]

My 6.5 was only for that leg of the trip, once I got back onto soul sucking Highway 2 it went back up to 7.5, that may have to do with the speed I was carrying. >:D
Summer time I usually average about 6.9-7.2 on my commute (95% highway) winter it hovers around 8 - 8.5l/100kms and this is generally very light on the throttle.

No, I can't even get close to that in my s2000 lol. My Spec B seems very similar to my old WRX. All highway at 120 isn't bad, I just got 10L/100km going to Sunshine on Saturday. The slow line into the parking lot took about 25 mins which I'm sure dinged me a bit. I'm usually in the 11's for a typical tank. Most the kms are on Stony, but getting to and from Stony from the office is what gets me.

Ski as much as we can and then make the long trek home that night.

As a piece of advice, don't rush. If you can only get one done over the weekend then leave the next one for the following weekend. And don't be afraid to load up on the RetroRubber butyl glue, it will help keep out dreaded condensation. Excited to see the final product!

Yellow fogs to complete the theme??.... :P

Already have amber LED's in the fogs but was considering painting the chrome surrounds yellow also. Not sure yet.
I still have a minor bit of adjustment in the projectors, like 2° to level them. Will post up some more pictures in my build thread today.
