I would check out GCSurplus.ca
I think they have a yard in Langly, always a nice few say explorer interceptors (sans light bar) around that price that pop up, probably mid-100K kms to 200k kms.
A little different and will meet your requirements

Very high quality. Seriously considering this as I am in Vancouver right now.

It has a spool. Haggle him down to $2k and be a legend.
-
Bah I can't do it.
I can't afford the v8 lifestyle. :'(
13-16l/100km is brutal. And it's probably worse than that with the lift and gears.
-
If you let me pretend that "landed in BC" from Japan counts towards your desires, we can get something totally rad.

This one literally ALMOST says your name on it. "Duckhai", has recaros, has a chandelier, little cabinet in back for your nice things, has curtains.
https://www.beforward.jp/toyota/hilux-surf/bg146152/id/1208494/
This is orange, has quad baby launchers, lifts and mud tires already, plus fender flares.
https://www.beforward.jp/mitsubishi/pajero/bg140164/id/1202080/
3rd gen pajeros are inexpensive and pretty "modern" for what they are, off road capable.

Ekai, if you buy that I'm going to call you Rad Max

How about a Hearse?

mmmm that orange...
The price landed though is pretty brutal, but shopping import sites and GCSurplus is a great idea.

If you don't get one of these I don't even know what you're doing with your life.

Didnt come with optional tach but with 90hp maybe its unnecessary. 6055km though.

rad little truck, instrument cluster is super cool, headliner is disgusto
https://www.beforward.jp/toyota/hilux-surf/bg160382/id/1224022/
awesome seats, coolest stickers around
This next one is seriously the pick of the litter. I kind of want it myself..

I like to consider these a crossover between rad old cars and ittshay new cars. Its kind of itshay looking, but not that big. Im a strong maybe on this boring POS. Honda 4cyl vvtekyoo = yes. low kms = yes.
JDM is hard, theres never the perfect one.
Be nice to get a hilux/hilux surf in gas v6 3.4L because parts parts parts!
But theyre all wrecked or wierd. If a unicorn pops up, 5.5k is not bad landed but kind of in the upper end of my price range.

Yeah, I don’t think you’ll find a 5vzfe within your budget. That’s how I ended up with the Pajero, I was originally bidding on Hilux Surf 3.4 v6’s, lost 3 or 4 at auction, last one I lost would have been like 12,500 with a grade 3.5 and 160,000km and I lost at that bid.
I wouldn’t say JDM there’s never a perfect one, but if you have a set budget it could take a long time to get something in that budget if it’s at the lower end if you’re bidding at auction.
For sure beforward there always seems to be a catch, not the engine you want, not the trans, more kms, rougher shape, etc.. but price wise hard to beat.

your pajero is so sweet. max green jelly.

So far I am pretty happy with it. Bought it totally on a whim, was a slow week at auctions for Hiluxes, so it was actually the first time I searched Pajeros, and just because I seen the "pajero" option in the drop down menu of the search after looking at evo's. Scrolled through knowing nothing, seen the blister fenders and thought it looked really sweet, then just told Mark to bid on it to a max bid of 150,000 yen less than the last Hilux I won at auction, and happened to win it.
If it were me with a budget of 6k, I would seriously consider the 3rd gen pajeros. They're a little more modern, a little more comfortable and sensible.
This one is a 5 speed manual.. you almost never see those. It is non-GDI, which is probably a benefit to me at this point (not that the engine hasn't been reliable, but it hates ethanol), has 4.636 gears (which are good (people usually try and find the 4.88 gears or the 4.90 for 33 and up tires, and 5.26 gears for 35+'s... but it would be difficult to get anything bigger than a 33 on a 3rd gen.
https://www.beforward.jp/mitsubishi/pajero/bg152476/id/1215964/
It is rough enough that you wouldn't feel bad beating on it, nice enough that it looks good outwardly, and cheap enough to be in budget.
This one looks pretty good, but above budget and 4 speed auto

Foresters are mostly old-ish skinny people that look uncomfortable in collared shirts but wear them anyways and are apparently tanned for life.
Loggers look exactly like any equipment operator anywhere in industry (its pretty much all done with big ol machines in this part of the world)
The dusty as uckfay cowboys are the top of the heap. Somehow always dusty even in a rainstorm. Yellow teeth from smoking looseys. Bow legs for real. Plaid and sheepskin for miles. Always driving dirty old diesel duallys with the windows rolled down blasting croon-country and blues.

You have to respect our cultural heritage. There is a rich and delightful spectrum from white trash to white trash in collared shirts.
-
And people say white people don't have culture....
Try again sweetie.
Side note last weekend out at farewell canyon we had a guy ride up to us that looked exactly like the photo below except all his tack was embossed with little designs and his mustache was bigger and tell us "you boys know this here's private property? Shouldn't be riding bikes out here... Company don't like it much".

Two questions: is the used car market better in BC, and if so, do you have a spare couch?

This is no longer applicable to a private sale for a car being taken out of BC.

The government would probably spend more in trying to get taxes out of me than they'd ever get back for the average value of the boiled turds I drag home.

If you buy a car in BC and drive it back to AB, get an OOP done and register it in AB, do you then avoid paying the PST? I was always curious about that, but this link didn't mention it.

You just have to provide proof of your Alberta residency at time of purchase and the PST should be waived up front.
-
Semi-related question. I have a relative giving a sibling of mine a free car. They're in BC, we're in AB. I'm picking it up, and they're selling it to us for $1. We're going to tow it back, so I don't have to worry about insurance/plates until we're here, but will I still need to pay PST on $1? Will someone harass me about that?
-
Couldn't you just get an in-transit permit to drive it back to Alberta and do all the inspection stuff after?
https://www.registriesplus.ca/vehicles/in-transit-permits/ (https://www.registriesplus.ca/vehicles/in-transit-permits/)
-
yes but what hes asking is different.
Im not actually sure on how exactly it works. Intuition tells me you should be able to bring an Alberta (aka super weak) transfer of ownership paper with you, get it filled out , bring the car back to alberta, then complete the registration here (part of which will be getting the OOP complete)
How I did it varies because I had to drive mine back to AB
-go to BC (make sure its not sunday!)
-Bring completed transfer of ownership papers to ICBC (I was advised to put $100 on the sale and pay the $7 pst, as gifts only fly if it is a family member.)
-Pay to get the car registered in my name. In BC, byou dont need to pay yearly to have the car "registered". It just always is yours and they dont delete it from the database. I think theres a fee to transfer it over.
-They will print off a proof of ownership from ICBC
-I then bought a transit insurance for 1 day and drove it back
-Once in AB i got insurance, then got OOP, then registered.
-
You can use an Alberta in-transit permit.
-
It hasn't started in 5 years, so we'll be towing it.

Could you not bring a license plate with you, put it on the car you buy, drive home and then get the OOP etc done in AB? My insurance lady has always told me I can put my personal plate, regardless of the car I have it registered to, on a car I buy, and I have 2 weeks grace period to get it registered. I do need insurance, but that's a VIN and phone call away. But this has always been within AB, not sure if things change between provinces.
-
Only if you sell a car, and the plate/insurance are valid. I didn't sell a car, and I didn't have a plate for it.
