Well we sold my wife's motorcycle tonight. I sold mine last Fall since I spend a lot of time and money on prepping the car
for Autox now. She's sad to see it go, I'm happy to have the cash in the bank.
Before the bike sold she wanted me to spread out the spending through this spring, but I can't take it any longer, I want to see
a pile of parts soon.

Coilovers should be here on Jan. 26th at the latest.

Already ordered:
  • Greddy Up pipe with EGT
  • TIC Rear diff bushings - comfort

Soon:
  • Talk to Jason at Dales Motorsports and order 350lb rear springs for my T2 coilovers
  • Order Schroth Quick Fit Harness
  • Get Cats welded into Downpipe - still haven't decided where
  • Order Longacre Scales for "work" and personal corner balancing

Hmm that sounds like a lot less left to do than I thought. Other than talking with Cam and Whiteline that's everything I planned
for the season.

Any reason why you want Cats in the DP, as opposed to midpipe?
Are you going to get more than one?

The cats are high flow metal spun cats, for STX the car needs to be emissions legal, placing the cats in the downpipe, closer to the turbo helps them stay efficient by warming up quickly and staying warm. No cel defeats are allowed, no O2 spacers either.

The O2 sensor is behind both of them so that it can monitor catalyst efficiency and I can (hopefully) guarantee no check engine
light and a complete monitor status to be 100% legal for Autox. I have a catless up pipe and the testing done by several STX racers
on Nasioc says you need 2 cats to keep the O2 monitor happy in a WRX, STI's can get away with 1 in the downpipe.

The one cat will be in the vertical section similar to many catted downpipes, but the 2nd cat will be just after the downpipe turns
horizontal. I have an RSR which is JDM length so there is plenty of room.

It will look something like this...this is not JDM length but you get the idea

Interesting and good to know. I was planning on (eventually) just running one Cat after the DP bend.

Again this is only for STX, If I didn't have to be legal for STX then I would be running a single cat
anywhere in the downpipe.

Grant is legal on a single cat, some other guys in the US are as well, but its hit and miss day to day.
I preferred to add the second cat and not have to worry about it.

Yup, I'm gambling.  But I have yet to throw a code with just the 1 cat while running my STX legal (no CEL disabled) map.

Re: Jason R Morrow's Bugeye Sedan...Maybe selling and buying an 04 STI
« Reply #58 on: March 15, 2010, 07:42:58 pm »
Well maybe...

04 STI's are reasonable right now, my car still has reasonable kms (116,xxx), its a late
02 with the Updated 'BA' trans (wider gearset like 03+) and even though I'd like an
06 STI, the 04 will accept almost all of my current go fast stuff. An 06 will cost me more in go fast
stuff when the day finally comes that I could even afford/justify to the wife, the 06 (2-3yrs).

- wheels/tires
- coilovers
- group N rear mounts
- camber plates
- TBE - new TBE rsr is sold, still need a cat in STU
- I have an up pipe with egt, guess that can go up for sale, or plug it and run it since I have it
- front sway bar
- front sway bar links
- gearbox positive shift kit
- offset LCA bushing for caster
- Grimmspeed manifolds/crosspipe
- toe lock kit

So to get ready for STU
- buy rear lateral links/sway bar/endlinks for STI
or
- continue with WRX style lateral links and swap entire rear sway bar/hd brackets/endlinks from
my wrx to the STI
- steering rack bushings
- STU tune
- learn to drive a suretrac front diff

Of course all this means I could have kept my Rota's (17x9" allowed in STU) but shaving 4 lbs per wheel
isn't a bad idea.

I'm  thinking of listing for $16,000, the buyer and I can discuss what goes and what stays. I can
remove/swap/install anything free of charge and align it all when its done.

Anyone looking to trade ?

Ok well its time to list the car for real. I have to fly down to Vancouver in a few weeks to make the final
call but everything looks good so far. A little scared about selling mine before seeing the car but
the car has already been inspected/compression check done, and checks out.

I'll be posting my WRX for sale tonight, it will be going back to stock on Saturday March 20th
and then its ready to go.

The only possible things to part out would be the Kartboy SS and bushings, STI up pipe and thats about it.
I have to see about swapping the rear sway bar and mounts/endlinks along with Whiteline WRX lateral
links onto the 04 STI. Or I will just leave the rear sway bar on it.

If it works then all of my suspension can move over no issues. The exhaust is sold and thats the reason for
going back to stock.

Asking price will be $15,500.
116,6xx kms
Late 02 with 'BA' trans (wider gearset like 03+)
Stock wheels with Hankook Icebear W300 tires (70-80%)
Tear in front bumper

More details in the for sale ad later, just a little excited to be buying an STI though !

This was all maybe a little too early to post. I am going to return the car to stock form this saturday but it
won't actually be available for purchase until closer to or even after the STI is home. The deal could still fall through once I actually see it and drive it, and I can't be left car less 1 month before Autox season.

I will entertain anyone who is "interested" and keep you in mind. Ideally I'll have a lineup of 4-5 buyers ! Ya right.

Wow, after some reading thats incredible how far you've come. You also seem to know just about everything about autoX. Congrats on the sponsorships, I can only imagine how much work you have put into your ride and to pushing yourself further. I wish I coulda caught you in action at one of these events with your bugeye. Sadly looks like it will have to wait until your new toy is ready. Keep us all posted on whats to come next, and let me know when I can come catch you on the track. Good luck with the STI.

Xrayvsn was correct, the whole point of buying an 04 sti now was to swap all the parts that I've acquired for
my WRX. I always wanted an 06 STI, but that was going to take a few years at least, and much more money
for go fast parts. The 04 right now (isnt my favorite body style) but gives me the affordability of swapping parts
and a cheaper car for initial purchase.

It will be a couple weeks before I get my hands on it though, the seller is in Japan right now.

The choice is made !!

Racecomp Engineering Tarmac 2 coilovers. I bought them used in January. They are a 5x100 fitment.
I'm going to run the 500lb/400lb rates and see what happens.

I'm still a long ways from owning the car, my excitement may have been premature. When I hand over the check
and start driving it home from BC i'll be sure to update this thread haha.

Bugger!   was following your build thread for a while then didnt come back for a while.  didnt think there were that many new posts!  hahah.  I even checked the beginning of your thread and saw Tarmac 2's in your future section.

STU does sound like a lot of fun. Possibility of FTD's and running well in the Raw championship and still
a good pax modifier. Then for our work track days and on the street run the full tune and have some fun
on the larger tracks as well.

Compared to STX (.830), an STU(.844) car has to be...

0.42sec faster on a 30sec course
0.63sec faster on a 45sec course
0.84sec faster on a 60sec course
1.26sec faster on a 90sec course

So hopefully diffs and torque are worth that much time !

I have no doubt that the STi can be that much quicker than the 2.0L WRX... Can *you*?  ;)

(P.S. To be honest, I have no doubt you will be too.)

The sti PAX's quite well in STU! Hopefully you'll be running with a big field.
I remember a couple years back, the ASA events had huge STU/STX groups, which made things amazingly fun. IMO, the sti is far better suited (and competitive) for STU than a 2.0L wrx in STX.

One thing to consider is having an STU map made for your car, I can show you a version mine if you're curious on what it consists of. The extra timing on 94octane is nice to have when you drop out of boost.

What tire size are you going to run?

Hope you enjoy the 04sti; it's definitely a different experience to the WRX.

Thanks Grant, It will take some time getting used to the power though.

Kind of like the last events of last year when  finally figured out I needed to downshift in the hairpins
at Penhold, it felt so sloppy and I was all over the place exiting the corner the first attempt and I honestly laughed the run off as a failure, but the time was faster.

Then I was able to smooth it out, rev match in and get used to the extra hit of power coming out and was able to come back to a correct line and exit and picked up a ton of time. I can't imagine what coming out of a corner in 1st in an STI is like, it will take some time to get used to and have it pointed in the right direction.

I had 245/40r17's from the WRX, I know 245/45r17 is a better choice to help with the short gearing in the STI
but they will have to do. We don't have too many long courses, I know Johnny shifted to 3rd once at Penhold when he was borrowing an 07 STI, and those have a longer 2nd gear so theres a chance I could be up into
3rd a few times.

I will definately have an STU map, and very glad I didn't order my new DP with 2 cats, the STI seems to be
happy enough on a single cat to keep the CEL's away.

The field will be small, I don't know of any other STU cars from last year. Most likely I'll be aiming to
take down the "RAW" guys. And pax well overall.

You'll seldom find yourself accelerating out of a corner in 1st, unless the corner is near the start gate. And there's no point trying to downshift into 1st unless you really really hate your transmission.

1st gear out of the corner should be reserved for the streets in order to showoff your WSC decal in front of sr20 swapped 240's!
