My car never came with a cabin filter.  Since I have no reference from a previous filter, which way should the air flow go?  Away from the blower at the bottom or towards the blower?

Air flows down through the cabin air filter.  Arrow should point down.

If your not biased towards subaru parts you can get napa gold cabin filters.  There made by wix, decent filter $35 , i would give any wsc member a better deal on them, but i'm in lloydminster and most of you are in edmonton and calgary, anybody in lloyd looking for one can let me know.  if your elsewhere go to a napa and ask for a better deal or that you'll do a group buy or something, i work at a privately owned store so i maybe have more control over pricing then at the corporate locations.  especially if you work at a shop you will get a better deal.

Not sure if anyone else has tried them, but you can get the Fram Freshbreeze filters for our cars as well, nice little scent of Febreze in there, and the price is pretty decent as well.

'02 Subaru WRX HKS, Invidia, Volk CE-28N, lots of Sti parts. Great winter beater.

After what Fram pulled with our oil filters, I'm not putting any more Fram products in my car.

They're going to park their car over there. You're going to park your car over here. Get it?

I did mine a couple weeks ago.  Got the new filter from Napa, I think it was about $30.  The old filter was ridiculously dirty, like almost black.  Funny thing is I didn't really notice any difference after changing it.  Fan seemed to blow the same speed, didn't smell any different or anything.  At least I have the peace of mind of knowing its fresh though.  :D

changed mine at 21059km. I never even thought about this until reading this thread. My gfs was much worse on her 2002 Honda Civic. So much pet hair and dust and it was bad haha. I practice on her vehicle before mine ;)

I don't think they have the fresh breeze ones for our car. I think I recall snackers recommending napa and that's why I went there...something about a wix filter? All they had for my was napa gold!! Either way it's better than that crap I was breathing in!

Cabin air filters for 08+ are kinda goofy. The media itself is maybe 1cm thick, and super thin. I can't see it being super effective at removing particulate. Better than nothing, I 'spose.

Picked up the WIX for $28. A little pricey, because the plastic frame is a throw away.

I may scream like a dainty lady, but I punch like a fairly strong 11-year-old.

That's not a bad price better than the first one I bought at subaru city

Forester uses the same one-time-use-plastic-frame-included filter.
I cut the dirty filter material out and made my own using furnace filter and gorilla tape.

Fram doesn't make the filter for  GE, GH, GR or GV So you're all clear there, Dealerships charge 43.95$ for them though. If you're set on cost the NAPA ones work fine. It just reduces the change interval as they're not as thick. I've seen people put air fresheners above the blower motor so they didn't have to buy the Febreeze ones.

Yup.
Just saying it's possible if you don't want to spend the bling.
They're also only 20 bucks from SGP if you're getting stuff from there anyways.

Reminder to change your cabin air filter before winter really comes.
Amazon has genuine OEM filter 72880FG000 for cheap. https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00IW33T5A/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

IMG_20180915_172712 by Trevoroni, on Flickr

2015 Crosstrek on top (hasn't been changed since new )
2006 Outback on bottom, who knows when/if it was changed. Looked like a homemade filter with scotch brite pad, bounce sheets and chicken wire??
But based on this maybe it was OEM?
I took my own advice and decided to do the filter on the girlfriend's 2005 Legacy today. Just as LDS and Claw mentioned my 2005 did not have access to the filter but the cage was there. That didn't stop someone from stuffing what felt like the equivalent of Scotch abrasive pads in there (just they weren't abrasive). Again I'm estimating about 7-8 years of crap in there. The Fram filter comes with the charcoal odour absorbing stuff on it so it already looks dirty. I cleaned a bunch of stuff out of the bottom of the squirrel cage as well. Some Owners amaze me with how far they'll let things go...

Sorry resurrecting that old thread:
$35 at Amazon is cheap? Then what is $8 from ebay (genuine Subaru)?
Obviously times change rapidly...
