The Kickboxing/MMA Thread
« on: October 26, 2009, 09:43:56 pm »
Ok, I just signed up for seven weeks of kickboxing training. Nothing serious, more fitness than anything. I don't really have any friends that are into this so I am going in blind. I was wondering who else on here is involved in kickboxing/MMA. Also looking for tips and tricks.

Where do you guys train? How serious Are you, how long have you been in it?

Where do you guys buy your supplies? Especially in Edmonton. At the minimum, I'd like to pick up some weighted gloves. How is the pricing at places like Rising Sun, Combat Zone and places like that?

I would even like to see about getting sparring meets together towards the summer so we could keep up our practice and (safely) train and so-on.

I train in Wado-Ryu Karate, but my Sensei teaches it from a very early, Okinawan style - which makes it very 'mixed'. However, I don't train to fight competitively.
As far as gear, I haven't been to Rising Sun in a long time, but that's because I found their selection limited and expensive. I recently picked up some really nice gloves at Panther for a decent price, but other people in my Dojo have found better deals online. I just liked not waiting/paying for shipping ;)

I signed up through SNAP. I have no idea of the reputation of the place but I really like the instructor and her attitude. She flashed me a smile and I was handing over the credit card and signing papers ;) She's also my personal trainer...

Wado-Ryu Karate

Sweet.

We focus more on the joint control/destruction, grappling, and striking than on the Hadouken though.

Is anyone planning on going to the next TFC fights at Shaw? I went to the last one and it's an awesome experience to see in person.

I have been training at Hyabusa in St. Albert for the last few months. I also am just doing it for fitness and for fun. I don't want to fight competetively, but my buddy I train with wants to try it. We have checked out a few places for gear and so far the best prices on gloves is right at Hyabusa. I'm waiting for them to get in there next order to get some.

I've got three weeks before I start training so I have some time to shop around. St. Albert is like the other side of the world to me though ;D

I'm with Flex on this one, Hayabusa Training Centre. Great people. And Gear is respectibly priced.
