It has been a very long time since I have owned a vehicle that I don't care about. I was not actively looking for something to fit the bill for about the past year. AWD, wagon, manual, functional heater.
This opportunity came up, so I took it.
It is a 1994 Impreza L wagon.
5 speed
1.8L
~315,000kms
The purpose of this wagon is to get me to work and back, and maybe do some dirty work that I don't want to do with the
failhatch. It is meant to keep operating costs down, maintenence costs down, and perhaps bring the fun level up a little bit.
Obviously there will need to be some work to bring it up to snuff.
Front passenger axles needs replacement (boot actually, but cheaper and easier to just replace the axle shaft assembly)
Front cam seals and rear main seal appears to be leaking.
Some minor bits of broken stuff in the engine bay should be replaced.
Brake fluid needs to be flushed
Timing belt will need to be changed... at some point. Don't know when it was last done.
What's good?
Brake pads were changed all around about 4 months ago.
Spark plugs and wires were done a little before that.
The engine runs (and runs not bad)
The heater works.
The stereo works (aftermarket JVC HU)
It came with winter tires.
It's fun.
What's bad, but not bad enough for me to care about it? And will I change it?
1.8L - it'll get me to work. Also doesn't cost as much to maintain. At some point, maybe a 2L or 2.5L will get swapped. I don't know anything about doing that, and at this point, I don't really care.
No rear swaybar - If I happen to come across one that'll work, I'll put it in. If not, meh.
Rear drums - Again, if I happen to come across the rear subframe of an RS, I'll swap it in. Would be nice, but it's not a priority.
Rear defroster and rear wiper do not function. Doesn't really bother me.
What's cool?
The rear defroster does not work, however, when I push the button to turn it on, the car smells with the fragrance of McDonalds french fries. It's pretty sweet.
Also, the coolest thing is the fact that I don't care about it. Door dings? Yes please.
I plan to winter autox the car, as well as rallyx it.
The plans for "mods" are intended to be free hand-me-down mods.
This car is supposed to be fun, but less costly that the failhatch. It runs 87. It'll get ittshay oil, and probably not at the manfacturer's recommended intervals. It'll get cheap oil filters. If they're cheap enough, I might even change it out each time I change the oil.
If anyone has the following parts that will fit for extremely cheap (ie. 10 bucks or free) I will accept them.
WRX struts and springs
Rear disc conversion (rotors, calipers)
Rear swaybar (will require lateral links.)
In fact, just the rear end of an RS will do (subframe and so on)
2L drop in
Short shifter
New shifter bushings (OEM or otherwise)
And here is the awesomeness.
Nonfunctional rally lights, and a garage door front lip
Came with free emergency food supply
The infamous cupholders over the stereo
DIY mudflaps. These suckers ain't comin' off... oh wait, is that rust?
1.8L of awesomeness
