Project Laggin' Wagon - Fare Thee Well, ol' reliable
« on: March 01, 2010, 03:37:04 pm »
It has been a very long time since I have owned a vehicle that I don't care about. I was not actively looking for something to fit the bill for about the past year. AWD, wagon, manual, functional heater.

This opportunity came up, so I took it.

It is a 1994 Impreza L wagon.
5 speed
1.8L
~315,000kms

The purpose of this wagon is to get me to work and back, and maybe do some dirty work that I don't want to do with the failhatch. It is meant to keep operating costs down, maintenence costs down, and perhaps bring the fun level up a little bit.

Obviously there will need to be some work to bring it up to snuff.
Front passenger axles needs replacement (boot actually, but cheaper and easier to just replace the axle shaft assembly)
Front cam seals and rear main seal appears to be leaking.
Some minor bits of broken stuff in the engine bay should be replaced.
Brake fluid needs to be flushed
Timing belt will need to be changed... at some point. Don't know when it was last done.

What's good?
Brake pads were changed all around about 4 months ago.
Spark plugs and wires were done a little before that.
The engine runs (and runs not bad)
The heater works.
The stereo works (aftermarket JVC HU)
It came with winter tires.
It's fun.

What's bad, but not bad enough for me to care about it? And will I change it?
1.8L - it'll get me to work. Also doesn't cost as much to maintain. At some point, maybe a 2L or 2.5L will get swapped. I don't know anything about doing that, and at this point, I don't really care.
No rear swaybar - If I happen to come across one that'll work, I'll put it in. If not, meh.
Rear drums - Again, if I happen to come across the rear subframe of an RS, I'll swap it in. Would be nice, but it's not a priority.
Rear defroster and rear wiper do not function. Doesn't really bother me.

What's cool?
The rear defroster does not work, however, when I push the button to turn it on, the car smells with the fragrance of McDonalds french fries. It's pretty sweet.
Also, the coolest thing is the fact that I don't care about it. Door dings? Yes please.

I plan to winter autox the car, as well as rallyx it.
The plans for "mods" are intended to be free hand-me-down mods.
This car is supposed to be fun, but less costly that the failhatch. It runs 87. It'll get ittshay oil, and probably not at the manfacturer's recommended intervals. It'll get cheap oil filters. If they're cheap enough, I might even change it out each time I change the oil.
If anyone has the following parts that will fit for extremely cheap (ie. 10 bucks or free) I will accept them.
WRX struts and springs
Rear disc conversion (rotors, calipers)
Rear swaybar (will require lateral links.)
In fact, just the rear end of an RS will do (subframe and so on)
2L drop in
Short shifter
New shifter bushings (OEM or otherwise)

And here is the awesomeness.

Nonfunctional rally lights, and a garage door front lip

Came with free emergency food supply

The infamous cupholders over the stereo

DIY mudflaps. These suckers ain't comin' off... oh wait, is that rust?

1.8L of awesomeness

The couple times ive gone to pick a part on the north side, There has been a few 90's subarus of various types.  Should this vehicle have have any leaks/bent/broken internals: you might be able to find replacements from there.

im assuming this hatch is like a 98 or something?  (i cant pick out what year it is from the body styling, i dont recognize the generations pre 02)

Old and busted vs. new.

Boots & CV-joint, yes.  Axles, don't seem to be.

The CVs expand and contract.
We watched it happen (with a whistling noise) on the old one, just by holding it, and watching it expand in length.

Welcome to the difference between a CV and a u-joint...  A CV has "plunge". ;)

Updated the first post with the "true" project info.

As per the previous posts, the front passenger axle assembly was replaced today.
This is a pretty easy process.
http://www.rs25.com/forums/f105/t66471-diy-axle-halfshaft-replacement-w-pics.html
Provided you don't screw stuff up. :P

Also, I went to Pick n Pull, and acquired a new headlight assembly, corner marker, front grill, and some distributor nonsense.
They also had a rear hatch from a brighton, but for some reason they didn't actually build this wagon to contain the hatch. Time was a little bit of an issue. I'll see if I can pick it up later.
Also, there appears to be some good parts for the rear subframe, but again... time.

FYI, this is how this thread started...

I'm starting this thread because snackers is too embarrassed to do it himself.

As you may know snackers recently picked up a winter/commuter 'beater'

As much as he will deny it, it is going to be modded. Unlike his failhatch, this one won't be a hotbed of nice shiny parts, but a place where  leftovers get put.
The mods for this car will largely be free or cheap leftovers from the Subaru community.
If you have anything that will work for the car, and be an improvement, send snackers a PM about it.

Firstly he has mentioned that it may need new struts, if anyone has a line on them, let him know.
He has a line on some wrx springs, to lower the stance and increase the roll resistance of the wagon.
He might be grabbing some upgraded sways too. I hear he may be upgrading to WRX brakes pretty soon as well.

While he does think the having it jacked up would be sweet, he would rather not go that route due to Winter AutoX concerns. Do your best to change his mind!

Another thing he is looking to do is to get his lights working:

The major upgrade he is looking to do is of course here:

He really wants a 2.5 in there.

So this is the start of his build thread.
Make sure to send him a PM if you have ANY parts you think he could use.
http://www.westernsubaruclub.com/smf/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=279
I believe he is turning it into a rice mobile too, so any neon or gaudy stickers you have, he would surely appreciate.

And my response...

What ultimatt forgot to say was that he will be doing all work on this wagon, since he apparently wants to mod it so bad.
So any mods that you may have available, please keep in mind that Ultimatt's "modding" skills involve showing up late, getting other people to bring him coffee, and making general smart assay remarks, all while complaining of a hangover from the night before where he was forced to drink beer he couldn't afford because he doesn't have a job.

Therefore, these mods must be "no effort" mods, or involve you putting your free parts on my car by yourself.

haha, thanks for keeping that.

I was going to make some smart assay comment about how today's project would have stalled (moreso) if not for me, but it may have gone smoother if not for my insistence to keep hammering. I would say I was even for helpfulness on the day.

Looks good dude!
If the sea was vodka, and I was a duck.
I would swim to the bottom, and drink my way up.
But the sea isn't vodka, and I'm not a duck.
So give me the vodka, and stfu.

If you're looking for a 2.5L engine, I've still got my old one. Its got 150k-ish and has a possible blown head gasket but replace that and you're good to go.
Go home Subaru. You're drunk.

To add to this, changing HGs on a SOHC is nearly idiot-proof other than the headstud torquing procedure.

You forgot to mention in the "cool" section that it has a roofrack. Pretty sweet in my book for those times when the GF wants to go pick up a christmas tree.

Nice little car.  It's nice to have a beater, I often wish I kept my old Civic for just that, I miss hand brake assisted turning in winter.  Your wagon is screaming for a custom paint job  ;)  I wonder if Plastidip would be up to the task, if you don't like your custom flames you could peel them off (?).

Truckbed liner was suggested to me, and I think that's a great idea.
Not that I ever plan to wash the thing anyways, but bed liner would assist with that task.

That stuff weights a lot, might hurt the MPG.

It was a bit of a busy day today.
I recently started hearing a very VERY loud rattle at idle, and a loud hissing/sucking sound when stepping on the gas.
So today was "discovery day".

GrantC came over, and we made some interesting discoveries.
First, many of the heatshields under the car were either not bolted down at all, or were holding on by the last threads of 15yr old rusty bolts. So a few heatshields were removed. Others were bolted a little tighter.
This didn't fix the rattling problem.
We believe now, after narrowing down the location of the rattle, that there is something rattling around inside the 2nd cat. So either the first cat exploded, or the second one did.
Also, the whistling sound is from a very badly ghetto'd extension pipe between the headers and the midpipe. Some of the welds have disappeared, so there isn't really a way to "fix" this.
I think I'll go to a muffler shop this week, and just get them to fix the whole blasted mess. Get rid of the cats, and fix a proper midpipe in there.

The road trip to Calgary made my head explode, so Ultimatt donated his wrx axleback to the cause.
The magnaflow that was on there was WAY too droney on the highway.
We installed that, and now she purrs quiet.
... well, as quiet as a car with bits of cat rattling around and huge exhaust leaks can be. :P

We also (dammit) discovered that the OTHER front CV boot had split.
Thanks Calgary!!
So I replaced the driveshaft assembly as well.

Here are some fancy pics that I didn't get last time for the passenger side.

Why the hell are you putting so much money into a beater?! It's a beater, just drive the damn thing and stop fixing ever minor detail! !! !
