Extremely High RPM in neutral
« on: February 08, 2011, 11:56:06 pm »
When I start my car it idles at 2500 rpm, and then I start driving in first and when I put in the clutch to shift it goes up to 4000 rpm until I go back in gear which forces the rpm down again.

If I stop moving and put the shifter in neutral it will move up to 4000 rpm for about 20 seconds and then drop down to 2500 rpm again.

Any idea what could cause this? I'm baffled

p.s. I've tried resetting the ECU by disconnecting the battery and then holding the brakes for 30 seconds.

p.p.s If there has already been a thread on this here or on NASIOC just link it, I couldn't find any  :P

Might need a reflash or check if your floor mat is holding the gas down

Dirty IAC?  High rpm can be a symptom....but then again low rpm can be too.

Most of these seem to boil down to sticky throttle or cruise cables.

Heh, sorry, 2004 RS
Thanks for the replies, I'll take a look at the throttle cables.

Also, what's an IAC?

I'd have to agree w/ the cruise control cable. It tends to tighten up in cold weather.. Maybe loosen it up, and it should solve the issue (hopefully).

Do you have a TSB # for this and what years and models it affects?
Happens for me as well, but I'm too lazy to poke around myself. If subaru will fix it for me, then it means I don't have to open the hood.

08 09 for the reflash most likely not that. I don't think 04 would be dbw. You can bring it into a dealer but your looking at 60 min just for them to hook up to Check. I would look at other options first

It could be sticky throttle/cruise cable.  In case you want/need to clean the Idle Air Contrl Valve (IACV). Here are the instructions from Subaru:
IACV cleaning

The situation seems to have fixed itself. Car is running normal currently.

For posterity, I left my battery disconnected overnight and before I started the car I wiggled the throttle cable a little bit.

So either something was stuck or it was an electronics issue.

Cheers
