Can't you use R-comps for BSP?

For the ASA Auto-x championship we have:

-Stock
(which allows R's, dampers, catback, and a front swaybar)
-Stock street tire
(same as above, but minus the R's)
-ST
(ST, STS, STX, STU, STR: suspension + street tires + emissions legal)
-SP, SM, M, P
(R's and varying levels of streetability, from a stage 2 Subaru to a Miata with everything hacked off)
-TO
(Street Tire "other", ie. the above without their R's)

So with or without R's, there's still a place to play where you'll be clumped with similarly prepped cars.

(Sorry for the classing interlude in your thread snackers...)

Understeer? Says who? As long as Cam commits to the required camber he will have that GD dancing, R's or not.

I've been back and forth on building an STU GD Sti, we will see how this season goes and decide from there.

Nice purchase Cam!
Hope to see you guys down at Ft Macleod to prepare for (possible) Nationals.

Nice car, Cam.

Sure, as a kid I had this picture on my wall, just like every other kid. But I'm not stupid, I know what will never happen.
An STi, while mostly but not completely impractical (in my eyes) is still achievable.

While that nice low slung Italian sports car'll probably never happen, you could go and do this.  You'll be one of a kind.

They're going to park their car over there. You're going to park your car over here. Get it?

Thanks all.
My dog has never been flung around the seat so much.

Regarding understeer, I have noticed it. I'm also comparing it to the LW, which has crazy oversteer.
Once we get some clear, dry, warm asphalt to play on, I'll see what happens.
It's AWD, I'm always expecting understeer.

Do you have the Dyno sheets/records from when Airboy tuned it?  (ie: if it was a local member, Did they post the #'s that you can now link into this build thread?).

PS: Great buy!  you picked exactly what i would have done had i not grabbed my 09 wrx.  06/07 STI in CGM is my top choice.  I hope this vehicle proves to be more exciting for you and less of a isspay off.

No.
And no.
Such numbers don't really interest me.

If I happen to go down for some tweaks or a mod update to the tune, I'll get one.

Being -20C outside (but a nice balmy -18.5C in my garage) it seemed like a good time to start some wrenching. Because really, who doesn't want to have cold fingers while turning a ratchet?

The car has been CELing, complaining about something to do with the front o2 sensor.
We (and by "we" I mean Airboy) figured it was either a bad front o2 sensor, or a leak somewhere in the header/UP flow.
Seemed like a good excuse to take it all apart since I need to wrap it anyways.

Ordered new gaskets for the entire exhaust system, pre and post turbo.
Ordered a new o2 sensor, just because I know if I didn't I would need one.
They'll all be here in a week, maybe 2 depending on customs.
Since I'm tired of looking at a CEL, I don't have a problem putting the car on stands for a couple weeks.
So let's get started.

Just for reference, this is how it looked when I started. If it doesn't look like this when I'm done, I can still probably get the going rate of about $30k for it.

Pretty standard I/Cless engine.

Mmmm... tasty!

On to the good stuff.
Driver side flange looked good and sealed.
Decently sized bolt used as an EGT plug. Go big or go home.

Sleeves look alright.
I'm disappointed with the blue filter, but the PO didn't seem like much a "forum guy" so how could he know that subaru sells itshay for its own cars?

Passenger side flange looks fine.

Seems to be the smallest amount of exhaust fluff around the header > UP flange.
Hopefully this is the source of the CEL.

The gasket didn't look like there was an obviously leak, but there was a bit of black on it where there shouldn't be.
I forgot to get a pic of the gasket, and now it's outside and I'm on my couch, all warm and toasty.

Over the next days/weeks, the UP and DP will come off (DP mostly out of necessity in order to get to the UP bolts, but it needs to be wrapped anyways)

This concludes today's episode of What's That Mod.
No wrenches were thrown into the wall during the filming of this episode.
All swears were kept out of the ears of innocent children, because it's minus uckfaying 20 degrees out and they're all inside staying warm.

Finally got the header manhandled off the studs.
Is there anything a screwdriver and some swearing can't fix?

Passenger side looks good.

Note: Yes I see the oily film there. Let's just ignore that for the time being.

Oh... what do we have here?

Yeah. That's unfortunate.
The nuts seemed tight enough, so I guess I'll just have to hope for the best of luck when I put the new gaskets in.
I've read multiple ways of installing them, and they all conflict with each other.
Start tightening with header > block, then work back to header > UP, then UP > turbo.
Others say reverse that, UP > turbo first, then UP > header, then header > block.

UP looked good on the first end, no leaks.

And for those curious about the nice long home depot bolt in the EGT...

Hella flush.

I'm currently stuck on that stupid friggin bottom DP nut, and decided to stop before I strip it.
So, UP/DP will come off during the next go-round.

Snackers: 1 Jerkmobile: 7
I'm closing the gap!

I finally got the damn nut off the bottom of the downpipe. Screw you kar!

Then got the uppipe off.
Good news! Future snax is screwed. It's gonna be quite the fight to get that thing back up there if I bolt it to the header ahead of time. Good luck to him! I hope there's no children around.

Kinda looks like maybe there was a leak at the UP > turbo too.

There was some black on some surrounding turbo bits as well.

Next up: a little bit of draw filing to flatten the header flanges. I'll also check the UP flange.

Then...

At first I was like, OK, my POS wagon is better than Snax POS wagon. Then I sold my WRX, and so did you. But you have a nicer Forester than me, I was a little jealous. Then you got an STi, you dick.

I mean, congrats on the purchase! :)

Sorry for the little derailment I'm gonna create here, but I thought, from all the conflicting things I've read (and considering the black filters are harder and harder to find) that the Blue one was the lesser of the evils? I get mine from the dealership, for $8, and I change it every 5000 at most. That's on the 2.2L NA, so I know it doesn't matter as much I guess ... but what are you guys using? Still tracking down the black ones from SGP or something?

Or is this the answer?

Napa should still be open. Go pick up a (better quality) Gold filter. Model 1365.

Man snackers, what's with all these exhaust leaks? Jeez!

PS: I use the blue one.

But the sea isn't vodka, and I'm not a duck.
So give me the vodka, and stfu.

On the NAs, I use the "today's special" from crappy tire. Whatever is on sale, usually around the 5 buck range. Sometimes Quaker State has a "buy oil, get free filter" deal.
But that's on the NAs.

On the jerkmobile, I'll be using the few Rokis I have left. When those deplete, I'll switch to Napa Gold.
Choice of oil filter is like choice of oil. Whatever you drink for breakfast is the best out there, and there's no arguing.
I have my reasons (one includes metal endcaps vs. paper endcaps on a highER performance vehicle) and I won't argue whether it's right or wrong. It's just my choice.
Also, the Rokis aren't available anymore. There's rumors that if you go to a Honda bike/lawnmower shop, they have the same thing under a different brand. I haven't looked into it.
Man snackers, what's with all these exhaust leaks? Jeez!
Previous owner (actually, previous previous owner) didn't seem to like to do mods to my level of "proper".
I've got a list of stuff I need to do to bring it up to my level of "ok, now it's ready for autox".
And there's very little of it that involves adding new parts, unfortunately. :P

Fair enough. If I had a second vehicle, I would probably park my own jerkmobile and go over the engine bay with a fine toothed comb as well.

I give you props for doing the work you are doing, and I'm sure when it's all said and done, this car should be pretty fun.

But I have to ask... Are you going to go wingless?

Nope.

I'll be honest, the work I'm doing is more to prevent a CEL I was getting due to the pre-turbo leaks.
I had plans on waiting until it got warm to fix up all the header nonsense. But it got tiring when I started to play with the car, and got a CEL. Reset, play, CEL. Curse, reset, cruise, CEL.
It's just that doing all the work to fix the leak involves taking it off, so kill two birds with one stone.
Gotta keep your pipes wrapped man, you never know about STIs these days.

Finally got some nitty gritty done today.

There seemed to be a significant leak on the header flange at cylinder #1.
Upon measuring with a straight edge, there were definite hills and valleys.

I didn't document the whole process, but here it is half way through.

When I started, the corner of the flange closest to the lower left of the photo was not even touching the file.
This was about half way through the process.
It is now mostly flat and even across the entire flange.

Then I got started on the work of the devil: wrapping UEL header.
Words of advice to anyone, including future snackers, thinking of doing this?
Pay the money. Get it ceramic coated and stfu.

But too late for that now.

Just gotta trim the clamp leads, and spray the itchbay.
Still waiting for gaskets and some random parts to put it all back together.

I haven't decided yet if I'll attempt to put it all back as one piece. The amount of twists and fanagaling I had to do to get the UP out makes me think it might be more trouble than it's worth.

If you want the expense and the pain in the butt, get it coated and then wrap it like I did!

When we installed my headers we put the uppipe on first, then the header, then tightened the uppipe to the turbo, then uppipe to headers hand tight, then headers to heads hand tight.  Then torqued down the uppipe to header joint, then torqued down the headers to the head.

At least if I remember it right that’s what we did.
I used to drive Subaru's.
