I did done there some "gotta get done before winter" stuff.

I also drilled out a broken bolt that is supposed to hold the splash guard in place. I'll need this to be functional for when I get a skid plate.
I didn't have a tap the proper size, so I'll figure that out... later.

I've been at my banjo bolt for over an hour now and can't get it to budge! How tight was yours?

Not tight at all. twss.
It shouldn't be harder than any other bolt. It has a copper washer, and I think the tq specs are something like 35ft-lb. Nothing crazy.

They are copper washers, not crush washers. So you can reuse them.
I got new ones, the upside down bag here:

There should be two. One on each side of the union fitting.

Sometimes they stick and you might not see them, so that's fine if they are still there.
If there is no washer, I'd be on the lookout for leaks.

They must have stuck. I just shoved my hand in the area. Still feels dry.

Transmission fluid change today. Redline 75w90NS in case anyone cares. It worked great in the failhatch, so I don't see why it shouldn't work just as well in teh fonz.
Not sure when it was last done, but based on the color of the fluid and what was stuck to the magnet, I suspect it was done at the "specified interval" of 72,000km.

More importantly, in case anyone cares, Subaru has come out with some new kind of washer to be used on the trans drain plug.
Part number 803926070 (copper washer) has been superseded by 803926090, whatever this material is.

Old on left, new on right.

There is some sort of material glued to the washer, which seems to be the color of aluminum.

16" BBS goldies that are 5x100?  They must be JDM right?  I'll give you $1400 for them, not a penny less.  :|

But I washed them!
They're right smooth with no dirt or dust on them.

I replaced the PCV on Fonz today.
Turns out it was completely seized. That's probably why it's been eating oil by the gallon lately.

I ordered the entire assembly with hoses this time, but that seems to be a waste of money. (pic below)
The smaller hose goes under the throttlebody. I'm not taking that off, so the old hose was reused.
The bottom hose into the block is impossible to get a tool down against the block to tighten the clamp. So I reused this one as well, and tightened a hose clamp on the PCV side as there's enough room to get a ratcheting wrench in there.

CN: Don't order the whole assembly with hoses unless you're taking the intake manifold off.

Also replaced the air filter as part of ye olde fall maintenance.
It was still clean from when Airboy blasted the sahara desert out of there before the tune, but hey... schedules are schedules, and must be followed.

I'm gonna brave another week with the no-seasons before I put on the world's only 16" 5x100 BBSses.
But here's a teaser.

My endeavors to make Teh Fonz into a reliable, comfortable, "performance" vehicle has progressed a further step.
Kartboy "comfort" outriggers showed up today. Since they're a 20 min mod, they went right in.

Interesting note, the passenger side bolts were all tight, but there was enough room between the bracket and the body to fit my fingers in.
I could actually push the diff carrier up and down along the bolt for about a half inch.
This was probably the source of a rather large clunk and some incredible drivetrain slop that I thought was unreasonable, even for a soccermom-mobile.

Next up, master cylinder brace.
I haven't decided yet if I want to try this just on its own to see if it helps with the huge dead space that the brake pedal has, or if I want to go the whole mile and install the sti MC and brake booster at the same time as the brace.

The smaller hose goes under the throttlebody. I'm not taking that off, so the old hose was reused.
This is not that hard to take off.  Don't be afraid.  A guy with your wrenching experience could do this easily.
The bottom hose into the block is impossible to get a tool down against the block to tighten the clamp.
You just need a friend to help with this.  Two sets of long needle nose pliers and you can reuse that clamp.  Just went through this installing the Crawford V2 AOS for TMIC.

You underestimate the amount of energy I'm willing to put into this.

I know the TB is easy to take off, but I didn't have a gasket for it. It hasn't been off for the life of the car (150k) and would likely tear.

Anyways, it's all done and I'll never do it again. (on this car)

Grimmspeed MCB went on.
Let's see if this makes any difference before I go to the trouble of putting in that STI master cylinder.

I started in this general area here.

Removed the jug.

Fit it into place.

Bam.

So is it a win?

A fail?

Worth the $?

Good enough to make the STi MC & booster not worth the effort?

Won't know until I drive it.
I will likely still do the STI MC at least.
The brace will only help on hard braking, which I rarely do on the street unless traffic suddenly stops dead on the henday... like it does every day. :P

I was really just curious to see if it is noticeable at all. If it doesn't help, then it'll probably go on jerkmobile next summer where it will actually do some good.

Reviewed the brace here.

I'll still be doing the STI master cylinder swap.
The brace will likely get moved over the jerkmobile next season.

Thanks Matt!

That's how this goes right? To protect the intercooler from that giant hole in the hood.
It didn't come with instructions, so I just put it where it fits.

that's a real swanky skid plate.  just a few bolts to remove for an oil change now, no fighting with the half-busted pop-clips on the stock plastic p.o.s

also for running over zombies
