6-8? I haven't watched the video yet.

I'm pretty sure the HG was gone when I bought it, now that I look at the condition of certain engine parts.
Oh well. Onwards and upwards!
I have another car that is track worthy.

Someone local in my LS group is building a 5.3 LS swapped Gen 1 Forester. Finally, a reliable turbo Subaru.

Four freaking years with the car and not a single (big) problem... you had it back for a month and you destroyed it already?  :o

In my defense... I have no defense.

What, again?!

What again?
Every subaru is it's own unique story.
The engine has never been out of this one until now, and now it has.

Heads will come off this weekend for inspection. Parts to be ordered, installation is reverse of removal.

HG kit
Clutch and PP
Ancillaries

Sure, a downpipe and a tune would be great at this point. Let me know if you've got an extra grand kickin' around you want to give me.

As mentioned above, work has begun on the newest project on my farm.

Engine was removed in good time with help from the G man and tools from the ginger.

Next bits will go slow, as I have no deadline other than those I set upon myself. Such as the snow melting and Castrol opening up.

Clutch was discovered to be pristine. Other than the odd couple autox's, winterx's, and the one lapping day which caused this whole mess, no real launches or racing has been done in the 240k lifetime of this clutch. But still, stop and go city driving should take its toll, no?

This day's work began with some logistics. I spent 3 hours building this monstrosity.
Minus lunch and some snack breaks. So like 20 minutes I guess.

I began work in this general area here:

Quickly (re)discovered this stupid problem.

Some rusty bolts and the bolt removal tool...

Led me this

...and the discovery of this

Which explains the dark spot on the heat shield.
So...

that was the end of that day.
Future days may or may not include:
turbo removal
timing belt and junk removal
cam removal (after cam gear fight... selling tickets now!!)
head removal

The way the exhaust flange looked at first I thought it was your engine stand and expected to see the engine laying on the ground in the next picture.

Are you replacing the clutch?

I would say that flange cracked because either the downpipe wasn't bolted to the trans or the up-pipe braces were missing.

There is no flex pipe on that up pipe which means it was rigid mounted and cracked because of movement/vibrations.

All the UP brackets were in place, but yes it was a rigid (likely eBay) pipe installed for 5 years.
A fresh new eBay pipe is on the way to crack and blow up in 5 years!

Went to the next step and got it all apart.
Let's get on to some ittshay quality pics now that the google update has ruined my camera's AF ability...

Started with a new garage toy.
Now there can be many dicks drawn to the artists liking by #garageofidiots

Some of this...

...a little of that...

Now she's all naked.
ooh laa laa

ohh THAT'S where it blew...

Buckets labeled and out, off for machining!

Cam removal

Do they charge you extra for that, or is it like some kind of Edmontonians only local special?
