Airboy's WRX-Ti wagon [Flex Fuel...Finally]
« on: September 28, 2011, 10:58:03 pm »
The wagon was never much of a project but the last round of changes are significant so I figured I would sort of document it here.  Older modifications may be added later on, for completeness.

After "deleting" 3rd gear in my 5MT twice within a span of a year, driving the wagon involved 1st gear to 3k, change to 2nd, rev to 4k, change to 4th and go from <2k.  People must think I was racing at each light, but only up to ~60kph :) :(

After saving my pennies I decided to switch out everything that is attached to the engine.

First, rip out the old stuff:

Then, throw in the new stuff (rear diff/brakes off to the side):

The ripping out and the throwing in of parts was done by Dustin and Ryan at Vex Performance.

Recycled my WRX shift boot (spot the zip ties, which since been replaced with an o-ring):

The combination of the sturdy 6MT and stiffer shifter bushings feels nice, real nice. ;D

Zip up to Edmonton on borrowed wheels/tires (thanks to Perfect Dark) to pick up some 07 STi wheels:

Snackers was kind enough to pick them up from the seller and help with the parking lot wheel swap.  Sure is nice to know people on WSC  :)

So what do I do next, now that 3rd gear has been added back, along with a bonus 6th gear?  Put it back on the dyno, of course.  Just a quick check to make sure everything is still working as they should:

Time to do some turbo testing, perhaps? >:D

Gain 50 ft-lbs, ask me how! :-)

Right on Sunny.  Stronger transmission means you need a bigger turbo to retain the same turbo to transmission strength ratio you had before  ;D

Even your 8psi no meth #'s are impressive!

Wow, I will admit to being surprised, didn't expect to see this extensive of an upgrade! Looks great though, and I have to ask, is that the pile of gear that came out when you finally changed the tranny fluid oh 6 months after shredding that gear?

Awesome!
If the sea was vodka, and I was a duck.
I would swim to the bottom, and drink my way up.
But the sea isn't vodka, and I'm not a duck.
So give me the vodka, and stfu.

Installed wideband AFR display in place of the clock.
1) Take the module apart

2) The voltmeter module clips into place nicely

3) Wire the power from the clock harness, hook up the analog output from the LC-1 and re-install

Oh, have to plug in the clock module or the airbag light comes on for the passenger detection sensor.

That's so cool! I saw it done with one of the Crawford cars but I figured it would be a lot more difficult than that to do it. Surprised nobody made a multi function display that goes there and toggles between clock / boost pressure / AFR.

Awesome clock mod!  Is it quick to react, or is there a bit of lag when values are changing?

ecutek made one (expensive) that reads/displays the OBD data.  Sits inthe clock pod as well.

I programmed the LC-1 to update at 1/3 second intervals.  Display is capable of faster rates.

That looks great Sunny, my buddy did the same thing on his Civic, but it just never looked quite as integrated, I think the color just matchs perfect on yours!

For years I didn't even know there were supposed to be flaps here (area forward of the front wheels):

Took another year or so before I finally decided to order the replacement parts.

I don't think I have those either. Are those just for aerodynamics? Do you need the factory splash guard to install them or do they just go into the subframe/fender liners?

Mine are still there I believe, but there were small 1-2" rubber flaps that hung off too, they are gone!
