Must feel great to be so damn close! Everything is looking incredibly minty and awesome as always. Good luck starting it this weekend!

Also, isn't coolant system conditioner only necessary for composite headgaskets? I could be totally wrong but I definitely don't use any

Thanks buddy! And as Grant pointed out, the conditioners more to prevent corrosion of the block itself afaik, so useful for all subarus. Its easy to add now if you want the peace of mind.

Actually the snippet Grant posted says that it's the Subaru Genuine Coolant that prevents the corrosion, not the conditioner. AFAIK the conditioner is more like a stop leak type solution that forms little solid chunks when added to the coolant. It helps fill microscopic holes that could develop to HG leaks and it is recommended for every Subaru model.

Anyways, here's a pretty good coolant FAQ:

Which allowed me to FINALLY get this to happen:

Wasn't working with this new ECU at first, but when I tried the beta version of EcuFlash it worked perfectly. Old ECU likely still okay as I didn't try it with the beta software.

Now to just deal with some CEL's that are showing and hammer out the final work.

Definitely stoked this worked out and wasn't a wiring issue :D

I'm pretty stoked about both of your builds. Lots of info in these threads. Considering I have an EJ205 with 190,000 on it right now. I'll either be looking into a newer Subaru or a swap in the next few years.

Thanks guys!

Hopefully a late night of work tonight and ill try to make the supermeet as well (not with the wrx). Hoping to turn key this weekend unless something else comes up. Few CELs to iron out.

:D :D :D :D :D

With the help of Dave and Kevin, we fired her up on Sunday!

WP_20140727_005 by gc8rex, on Flickr

After replacing p/s pulley (which got bent when I installed the pump) with the forester one (sorry Foz), priming oil system, checking fluids, and double checking hoses/clamps/wiring/Rom-raider, I finally turned the key...

She started up like she was running the day before, no hesitation, normal amount of cranking. Oil pressure, coolant, air/fuel all where they should be (front o2 working correctly even though I had to shave plug as it was slightly different from the v8 plug). Constant rpm, but a little rough/shaky. This smoothed out over time as the computer learned new timing, etc. Only value that seemed a bit off was Vac. It was sitting around -16/17mm Hg where I'm normally used to closer to 20. Not going to worry about it was seals/rings still wouldn't be seated perfectly and I'd like to do a more thorough boost leak test.

WP_20140727_007 by gc8rex, on Flickr

Engine was quieter than I expected too. Loudest part was the ID1000's clicking away, tolerances/oil pump must help to tone down any piston slap that's common on built motors.

No CEL codes showed up from the start up, and rom-raider logging showed 0 knock correction and all values seemed right where they should be. I was panicking at first, wanting to check all values, but finally relaxed seeing they were good :).

After getting everything up to temp, I shut her down and rolled her onto the lift. Dumped the oil (clean but slightly shiny from the machining flakes of the new parts) and changed filter, then filled up with Joe Gibb's break in oil.

WP_20140725_001 by gc8rex, on Flickr

Not a single sign of leaking from below. Couldn't see a drop of coolant, oil, etc. Hopefully I can keep it this way!

Bled the power steering system (no noise from the pump so seems all is well) with some new Mobil 1 ATF and with the help of Kevin data logging in the hastily installed passenger seat went for a test drive.

Clutch/flywheel all works perfectly, I couldn't be happier with the feel/engagement. Revs drop quickly and pedal isn't too stiff. Will have to see how it feels during fast shifting but I'm sure I'll be impressed.

Exhaust wrap started to seal/heat up which caused some great smelling smoke haha.

Got the car into boost to help seat rings (only ~5ish psi at first) but had a boost leak so I fixed that and kept at it.

This engine feels very peppy. Likely the combination of quick rev up from the flywheel and smooth powerband (what I've tested anyway). Just wants to go when easing off the clutch.

Currently 14km into her new life:

After all the blood, sweat, and tears that have gone into the planning and build of this motor, Sunday was a HUGE sigh of relief and satisfaction. Just under a year since I melted a piston at Stratotech, she's moving on her on power once again. Lots of tweaking/adjustment to do still, but this was a huge milestone.

Thanks for all the help/encouragement, couldn't have done it without the help of the community.

Hurray!!!! ;D

How long did you leave it run until you shuit her off and changed the oil?

Even though my engine is not "newly built" like yours, I was still planning on starting her up, letting her get up to normal operating temps and then flushing that oil. Who knows how long she has been sitting there and fresh oil for my tune is in its best interests.

I told you to wait to have everything plugged in and fired up before you started chasing CELs :P
Glad to know everything is working out well, that was my first OBD1->OBD2 conversion so this is a huge relief to see everything functioning correctly.

Wow. I'm only on page 10 but I will say you have done an amazing job with your car and mapped out a lot of the things I wanna do with my car as well as added links. Definitely subscribed to this build and expect some questions from me on my new project when my 1996 Sti arrives later this week.

**edit**
Okay got through reading whole thread and only thing I have to say is I hope my EJ20G will last forever.  Man that looked like a lot of work.  Congrats getting your car to where it is and it must be awesome having such an amazing space to work on your car
