Did you ever replace the oil separator plate on this thing with a steel or aluminum unit? If not, that's where your oil is going. My 97 would gargle oil out of the crack in the stock separator plate.

No, I haven't replaced that... Given the location of the transmission, the oil could potentially leak onto the exhaust manifold and smoke out small towns and villages?

Mine didn't drip that much oil but it certainly had a bit of a hot oil smell to it after a while of spillage.

Well I have the Separator plate on the way, should be here in the next day or two. I have an engine hoist sitting at the ready, as well as pages of engine removal DIY and forum posts printed off for ease of use. There's also solvents, cardboard, and cameras sitting at the ready. Clutch and flywheel are here (ACDelco for the clutch and Can't remember for the flywheel) are set.


So.... yeah. Guess we'll see how this turns out. I plan on finding and fixing all the leaks that I can, as well as painting the engine and engine bay a white/grey or something light colour so I can spot the oil leaks easier.

My main concerns are the oil pan, the heads (they don't seem to be leaking from underneath the car), and the separator plate. I'm doing the clutch and flywheel while it's out as well. No better time like the present, plus it's starting to feel a little sloppy. Anything else that I should be keeping an eye out for while the engine is out? And what should I be fixing/replacing while everything is gonna be accessible?

If you think the snout on the transmission might have been worn out by a dying throw out bearing in the past it might be worthwhile doing one of those oversize TOB snout repair kits. That said, my 97 snout was immaculate.

Don't forget to replace exhaust gaskets if you drop the header.

I'd worry about the valve cover gaskets more than the head gaskets. I think I still have a Felpro valve cover gasket set for the EJ22.

Use loctite on your flywheel bolts. Torque them accurately.

Use the gel Orange Gunk, not the foam - works a lot better.

Okay, the stuff I have is from my friend. I've used it previously, seems to work good. I'll get some orange gunk if this doesn't work.

Didn't think of the exhaust gaskets, will have to order those... Loctite at the ready, torque wrench was properly calibrated last time I checked.

port match your intake manifold too the heads and remove the casting marks in the intake and exhaust ports in the heads. Send the Cams to Delta cams in the states.

Don't forget to do your brake bleed while the car is up on jackstands because you're upgrading to 4pots as well.

Another project for another day, I'm afraid. At the moment, it's fix the bloody thing before I give it more power.


For 4 pots all the way around, I'd need to change out the rear drums.

So! Update:
I pulled the engine. Started shortly before noon, and had it out by 7. The worst part was separating the transmission and the engine. I kept thinking I had missed something, until I kinda bumped it and it started. Then the chisel came out and I was able to separate it.

It leaked a lot of oil.

Less rust is always a good thing  >:D

So my plan for tomorrow:
Replace the following:
- oil pan gasket
- valve cover gasket
- separator plate
- clutch and flywheel

Paint the following:
- valve covers
- intake
- engine bay

So a couple things I noticed while the engine was out. There's a *lot* of oil on the rack. My power steering has never been low while I've had, it, but I still wanna check. Given where the engine and trans meet, it's right below there, so it's tempting. My driver side CV on the inner boot was torn, but still really greasy, so I'm just gonna replace it while I'm at it. Actually, it was better for me to remove the CV joint rather than work around it, so kill two birds with one stone.

Mods I'd like to do right now. I wanna remove the power steering in its entirety. Remove the pump, all the hoses, and call'r done. From what people have told me, I'd be strong arming it when I'm parked, or going slow, but not when I have momentum. How would I go about it? Just recirculate the output to the input with new fluid in there?

As much as I'd like to do some head resurfacing and cam grinding, that'll be another time.

Aha! It's in, just need the two bolts for the transmission bell housing.

- Update -

Engine is in, fluids are in, and I think I goofed on the o2 sensor connection. I can only Rev to 4.5 k, and all the other connections are correct. The reason I think I goofed is the o2 connector came apart from the wires (not where it was suppose to) and I didn't have the colours documented.

The o2 has a black, and two whites, while the harness has Brown black.
, yellow blue, and yellow red. I need to know how the o2 (black, white, and white) is in the B18 harness.

Other than that... It seems like it is still leaking. The separator plate was replaced. I didn't see any block cracks while it was out, and it still looks like it is coming from the rear right side of the engine.

On my drive home they worked well. They rode well, considering the low profile. Not as bad as I've been led on to believe. I've only gone 75km, so I may not be the best to ask. Once I wear them in some more, I'll let you know.

In terms of grip, I haven't tried hard enough yet. They have a stiffer inside shoulder than the rest of the tire, as they're designed to take more negative camber, so the shoulder shouldn't wear on the inside near as fast if I go more negative camber. They have less siping than the Motivo, so I anticipate that they're going to be a little stable in the rain, and I had went over a small snow patch and no grip. Like, none. So.... yeah. There's that.
