Opportunity tasks while doing head gaskets
« on: May 31, 2012, 01:07:30 pm »
Head gasket finally let go last night on the way home from work at 3am, so it looks like it's time to start collecting parts and planning the job.  While I'd hoped to have a set of heads ready to swap in when the time came, that is not the case.  I am looking for suggestions as to what I should consider fixing while I have the engine out of the car.  The following was completed 30000 km ago (timing belt and cam change at 150000km):
-timing belt
-cam seals
-water pump
-valve cover gaskets
-rear main seal
-checked clutch, lotsa meat left

And my parts list so far is as follows:
-Hondabond
-Head gaskets
-exhaust manifold gskt
-Intake manifold gskt
-Possibly phenolic spacers
-Blue coolant
-gpN engine mounts

I'm certain I'm missing stuff, and off to start research, but your suggestions are welcome... or if you have an EJ251phII in the garage, sell it to me.

Why?
I'm tickling up to MAYBE 200 BHp, on a cold day in a valley with a high pressure system.

What would be the benefit?

Just a good idea and perfect opportunity to do so, when ever we rebuild any engine at our shop (most of which are to stock specification) we use upgraded studs.

I wouldn't spend the cash on studs, but new head bolts for sure (Not sure of price difference) Don't forget headpipe to midpipe gasket, engine oil, brake cleaner, water manifold orings. That's all I can come up with for now.

Rear main seal is a huge itchbay to do even with the service tool, I understand. Maybe leave it alone for now.

I would only replace the RMS if I was doing a clutch if not then I agree I wouldn't touch it

It was done at 150000, when I had the flywheel off. I imagine it should be ok.

It's easy enough, you just need a big enough socket (or fancy service tool) and know how to drive  a seal.
