Does it get louder or does it go away if you rev it? Sounds like piston slap on my blackberry but it may be rod knock,

Then I would lean more toward rod knock, maybe a bearing let go.

That sounds like you need a new bottom end.

For sure a knock. Don't run it anymore because you may be able to salvage the crank to get oversized bearings.

More of a high pitched tapping sound than a typical rod knock. Also, it seems way more consistent. I'm guessing something fubar'd in the head.

Cost me almost 5k at Subaru City dealership.
Think Subaru Canada charges $2500 for a brand new or refurbished shortblock.

That was for a 2004 WRX.

If your car is a 96 sti, I have no idea what kind of costs you would be looking at.

Rod knock. Sounds exactly like my car did and esp1818's when we spun a rod bearing. You can get a brand new built short block w/ forged internals for 4k

Might be cheaper to just get a whole EJ20K engine from a vendor that imports engines. IE: JDM place in Toronto, dozen places in MTL, couple places in CGY.

2500 just in labour. :(
It's an 08.
It was a lemon before it even achieved rebuilt status.

He is probably talking about the "labour" that would be charged at a dealership to replace shortblock.

Looking back at my receipts (City Subaru EDM), that's pretty much bang on.

But unless its on warranty, you would probably get it done elsewhere... consequently would cost less.

You could probably do it yourself if you aren't concerned with down time on the car.
