So rookie!

You'll enjoy stage 2 though. Really perks it up.
I may scream like a dainty lady, but I punch like a fairly strong 11-year-old.

Alternator, oil, radiator, exhaust, ecu reflash and we're ready to turn the key

Also did a rear diff fluid change, cabin filter change, and keyless chirper replacement.

Everything in this pile got installed.

Belts a little tight.

  • Grind the end flat (optional)
  • Punch the center of the bolt (if off centre, re-punch at an angle to walk the hole)
  • drill small-ish to confirm it's straight/centered  (tap is in other hole to help me keep/start it straight visually)

  • pray
  • drill to the correct size to tap that size of hole

  • With any luck all that'll be left is the threads of the bolt, which will pop out.

  • Chase the threads with either a tap or a thread repair tap.

Use anti-sieze... save your future self.

ToDo:

buy replacement bolts

Hat tip to Stig, I did one of the calipers on the car:  http://www.westernsubaruclub.com/smf/index.php?topic=52820.0

The only reason this one was off the car was because I thought I could get the stud out using other tools.  Easier to photograph though.

Yes, _both_ my rear Brembo's had the lower bolt snap off.

That looked like fun.

How does one know their clutch is nearing EOL?  I've got ~110k kms and min'e a 2005MY Legacy.
They're going to park their car over there. You're going to park your car over here. Get it?

Didn't realize you could replace the keyless entry beeper easily. I should figure out what happened to mine before I took delivery of it, probably choked with road salt.

Man, nice work Grant! Super impressed you got the brakes sorted without having to thread repair them.  O0

Put it in third and floor it, if the engine revs faster than the car moves, it's time for a new clutch.

If the revs " break free" from being in lockstep with the speedometer needle then the clutch is slipping.

It will start in the higher gears, 4,5,6... And then work it's way down the gears as it gets worse.

If you can pass through peak torque in 4th (no need for a full pull) then it's not slipping, yet.  This one was 190k old on a vigorously driven STi.

It was in exactly the same spot on my 06. I did it by reaching up through the bumper opening and reaching through the grille with an extension this time.

After setting off my panic on my car while it's parked inside my garage (again) while fixing Tabibito's bumper (again).

I decided to finally replace the piezo chirper for the lock/unlock noises, so I'll hopefully have a bit more warning that I'm sitting on my keys and about to experience 118 dB in an enclosed space.   :o :o :o

Thanks to mars636 for the chirper!

Snackers!
I deny all.

You'll have to let me know how it is, Grant-of-11-years-subaru. I've heard great things, but never had it happen before.

Cynical though snackers is, I ended up not going "stage 2" for so long because oem STi was pretty equivalent (or greater) than my "stage 2" 2.0L wrx had been.

So, I am looking forward to it.  Once I get it back on 4 wheels with some new brake caliper bolts.

One man brake bleeding show...

So, after the engine-out service my PS was _howling_ and the whole reservoir was foamy.

Driving to buy ATF & hose clamps was apparently enough of a heatcycle & cycling the steering back and forth to bleed the air out & "fix" it.

Oh well, if the power steering starts screaming again I have all the stuff to bleed it and re-clamp the hose.

Oh, and this might be the largest single improvement to the car in the wrenching this weekend.

Do this:
  • shift linkage pivot bushings
  • front shifter bushing
  • rear shifter bushing
  • a shift knob & reverse lockout ring you like

Don't do this:
  • a short throw shift lever

It's not any higher effort, and it's gotten rid of all the slop either side to side or forwards & back. It's not any further from the wheel, or harder to differentiate what gear you're in.  "Crisp" would be a good adjective.

Does it feel as good as the S2k shifter?

Of course not, because everything in that picture simply doesn't exist in the S2000.

  • In the S2k, the bottom of the shift lever is in the shift rod, and it pivots around a plate bolted to the transmission case.
  • On a Subaru that whole linkage goes forward & attaches to the shift rod via that trunnion (so it has 3 nylon pivot bushings between your hand and the shift rod) and the front/rear bushings are holding what the shifter pivots around.

But it's the best feeling Subaru shifter I've used.

While I was waiting at Subaru City to pick up my "special order only" bolts  :sarcasm: I hopped into the 2017 STi sitting in the show room to play with the shift lever.

Mine's crisper than a brand new STi, boosh!

(Fresh bushings are better than 190,000km ones though so the difference is less)

Then my trunk (which had been making this "sproing" noise) made this "clunk" noise...

What's that?

Oh, it's the bit of the trunk hinge that holds the end of the tension rod!

Let's take a look at how it should look, on the other side which is _obviously_ fine as this is clearly the only issue.

GiantCrackOnTheOtherBracket.jpg

 >:(

Those hinges seriously look like they were installed long before the car was painted, therefore long before any interior was in the car...  This is gonna suck.

Well, the tabs finally broke off entirely and I've been holding the trunk open with a piece of wood...

Time to fix that.

On old Fords and Chevies the spring-loaded hood hinges used to do that if you left them open with the hood removed for long enough.

The springs are just so strong that they bend the hinge and then you get gross hood gaps.
