Track Meet/WSC Lapping 2013
« on: January 09, 2013, 02:41:48 PM »
With the prospects of a fancy new track in Edmonton this year, it only seems fitting for a group of car enthusiasts to meet there and have some fun.

I would be interested in heading up a committee to organize a Time Attack, Autocross, and Show and Shine super meet. I would not want to overlap any of the track events so that everyone could participate in everything that they want. If we are at castrol, then possibly even drag racing too. I would also be interested in getting prizes and if it's a big enough hit then make it an annual thing.

Nothing is tentative yet, but if there is enough interest, I will try to get in touch with various organizations to hold a Super Track Meet this summer.

If you are interested in helping out, send me a PM and let me know what you can offer to the planning/operating process.

Comments? Thoughts?

Where would the autocross be held? It might be easier to just have a track meet. Be warned, the last time this was done for the WSC, it was a gong show and a half.

I should add, if you need any help, I'm more than willing to provide assistance. I was the coordinator of Time Attack for the CSCC so I know a bit of what is involved (like getting insurance, budgeting, etc).

All on one site would be ideal. That way competitors and spectators don't need to move about too much.

I am buddies with Matt who used to run the Speedway Performance time attack series at Stratotech so I would be seeking his advice/assistance as well if this gets the green light.

One site might present problems. Maybe do the track event on say the Saturday and the Autocross on the Sunday? That way people can do both without compromising their seat time and it's easier to control who does what (ie. can charge people for track, autocross and both).

I like that idea. I'd be interested in time attack.

Depending when it is Id probably try and give it a go. Even drag race would be kinda cool.

My car isn't pretty enough for showing and shining.

I'd be super game for a track event, though.

Is there a suitable paved area at Castrol?  I thought their parking lot was still gravel?

Or am I out've date & there's a new skidpad, cold-pits, parking lot that ASA should be investigating renting out?

Where they do the drift events would be my guess.

Before the track they used a small paved area just south of where the drag racers line up.
And the gravel lot is used for Rally X occasionally, super fun when it's mostly snow  >:D

Negative. Part of the parking lot next to where the new track is...

I've never been out to castrol, but by lookin on google maps there is a paved area (the same one Danny is talking about) to the south of the drag strip. By comparison on google maps it appears to be roughly the same size as greisbach.

Only a recce tothe site would prove it's suitability as an autocross track. Otherwise the new track itself might work. It looks pretty wide from pictures I've seen.

I am all for this. I've spent a decent amount of time out at Castrol, both spectating and working events. Organizing a big day is by no means a small feat but if it can be pulled together, well worth it for everyone involved.

For those that aren't familiar with the general layout, this is what I would propose would be a great example if you wanted to incorporate all the different events...

Yes, this is the area indicated in yellow would be a good bet for AutoX. This is where the drift practices are held every week (as you can see by the tire marks) and it serves as the pre-staging area during drag events (for inspections, etc). The entire area is paved and would be very easy to create multiple coned tracks.

The red area is the new road course. While they have only began to pave Phase 1, you can see where the rest of the track is headed. Far as I know, Phase 1 will only be available in 2013. This would HAVE course be the best time-attack area.

Blue is the drag strip, if there was enough interest to bother running it... Only issue is that the staging lanes run very close to the yellow area so either would have to be cleared in order to run.

The green strip is a long strip of paved road that is used for vendor booths when there are big events. It is a quick (1 min) walk to track and would serve as a good area to line up cars for a Show and Shine / BBQ area.
Alternately, the main parking area would work as well. It's not pictured but is below the drag staging lanes and extends all the way across to the trailers on the right.

Anyway, would be very cool to see this come together.

Exactly my thoughts. Show and shine could be wherever there is enough room.

On that note, I would love to see a "non traditional" show n shine in that points are also awarded for things that show people using their subies for what they were intended. For example, when I was at the NA4WDA show n shine points were awarded for tree branch scrapes in the paint.

haha that's pretty good...

I'll cart out a freezer full of snow and cover the car just before the show n shine for extra points

Lol. I was thinking more like cone marks, rally scars, gutted interior, etc.

Of course there would still be points for shiny and "form before function" type mods.

I know it was mentioned in the Boxer Battle '13 thread, but it might prove to be a good idea to think of how to logistically conglomerate/move the BB to Castol. Not that I'd be against having 2 track days mind you...

But as Thought said in the BB thread, it would difficult for him to do much organization if it were on this side of the field.

I'm sure it wouldn't be difficult to strike an organizing committee over here for organizing something like that. The only issue will be track availability.
