Later gives castrol more time to finish paving. And it's probably unlikely that the NASCC hold an event on a long weekend.

I think aggressively is the wrong way to think about driving on a track. If you drive "aggressively" you will most likely get you kicked off the track.

Pushing your limits and finding your car's limits in a safe and controlled manner and environment is what driving on a track is all about.

Aggressive driving will lead to mistakes and mistakes without experience will lead to spins and offs and possibly crashes.

How do the NASCC lapping events work anyways? If it's in between a race, what kind of time do you have? Is there passing? What kind of prior experience do you need, if any?

Depends on the number of entries they get for all of the classes that are racing. At one event last year there were almost no entries for the vintage class so they gave the lappers their time slot. It ended up being quite a lot of track time as they got just as much time as each of the race classes. Normally they would have a session in the morning of around an hour (split into two run groups if there are too many), and again over the lunch hour. If they get ahead of schedule they add another session at the end. It was extremely popular last year at the city centre airport so I would imagine that they would try to make it worth the while at future events.

At past events they have had a designated passing zone (straightaway) where passes could be made. If everyone plays nice it works well. If someone is being a oucheday then it can be a pain in the assay. As far as experience goes, I don't believe that they set a minimum requirement. There are plenty of drivers around at race weekends willing to hop in and be an instructor. They also set strict rules to make sure people aren't being stupid on the track. Two wheels off, come in and have a chat about what you did, do it again and you're done for the day. Four wheels off - done. No exceptions. If you are being stupid or dumb expect to get black flagged and have to come have a chat about what you've done.

All of this is based off of how things have run in the past and is in no way a guarantee of how they will be run I'm the future.

Ok, so the NASCC has released it's schedule for the 2013 road racing season! (much earlier than I was expecting)

Quote from: NASCC
Castrol Raceway -short track will be ready in late Spring, long track in mid summer.
May 25/26 school weekend. Short track
NASCC Track nights Thursday, June 6 and 20 Possibility of more Thursday nights once we know what our numbers are
June 15-16 Road Racing Events #1 and #2 (SHORT COURSE)
July 13-14 Road Racing Events #3 and #4 (SHORT COURSE)
July 27-28 Road Racing Event #5 and #6 (Possible LONG TRACK)
August 24-25 Road Racing Events #7 and #8 (LONG COURSE)
Sept 14-15 NASCC INTERNATIONAL GT CHAMPIONSHIP (LONG COURSE)

The question now becomes, if we want to pursue a track day in conjunction with this, which day should we pick?

I will update the poll accordingly.

Edit: Is it possible to change the number of votes people get? I'd like to set it to 10, that way you vote for what you are available for and then we can see which day is most popular.

I'd probably be down for the June or early July event.  You're trying to get us as a group part of the NASCC lapping event, and then watch the more experienced people race on the track?

I definitely want to get my car out to the track at least once or twice this summer.  Back when Race City was around, I use to take my previous car around for some lapping sessions every now and then through a sports car club I can't recall right now.

Calgary Sports Car Club?
That might have been it.  I also used to do some lapping sessions with Allen Berg's company, it's too bad Race City's gone now.

This is my experience in the past with Race City as well.  They have the passing zone on the straight and some basic rules about keeping your car on the track and not being stupid.

So it seems that a date is selecting itself for us. The July 27-28 race weekend has been cancelled due to a double booking at Castrol. The August weekend is the Boxer Battle and the remaining July weekend is the Super Meet. That leaves the June weekend (15-16) or the September weekend (14-15). The main difference will be short course vs long course.

I will be meeting with the VP of the NASCC tonight so I will ask him some questions about this year's lapping sessions and hopefully be able to pass along some valuable information soon.

There doesn't seem to be enough interest to pursue a WSC specific lapping session, but the NASCC will be running lapping sessions on all of their race weekends. I will post the information here when it becomes available as to how to register, etc.

I look forward to seeing some subies out at the track this summer. Be sure to drop by and say hi if you see me in the paddock. (#54 Kowboi Hotshot Honda Civic)
