I'm bad at training puppies, I'm only good at fixing rescues apparently.
I know my in-laws took their schnauzer to puppy school, and that helped quite a bit.

My dad and stepmom have a greyhound/irish wolfhound cross that has unlimited energy. They had to take it to a bunch of puppy training before they were able to successfully convince it to listen. Then they got a purebred irish wolfhound that's about 2x the size, can run as fast/faster, but has wayyyy less energy.
If the sea was vodka, and I was a duck.
I would swim to the bottom, and drink my way up.
But the sea isn't vodka, and I'm not a duck.
So give me the vodka, and stfu.
If you're having forum problems, I feel bad for you son, I got 99 problems but your post ain't one.

I'm definitely thinking puppy classes. I did a ton of research online about this breed beforehand, but I'm finding now SO much of what you find online is different. There's a hundred different perspectives and opinions on how to do things and what is right/ wrong. There's people online who say IG's are a good 'apartment' dog because of their size. They do have major bursts of energy, which for me seem to last about an hour. Then the crash comes and she'll sleep for 3 hours which is good. (Not so good at the wrong times though, so I need to be strategic so she'll sleep good in the night.) Also, suuuuuuuuuuuuper clingy dog. Needs to be with you 24/7 ;D

That will likely taper off, and you'll miss it.  :-[
Have you had to really do any disciplining yet, chewed up shoes or anything like that?

Lots, and lots, and lots, and lots.. of discipline :( Which sucks, because I fear being too "harsh" can impact the relationship in the future. She's such a timid dog as it is, and it's a very timid breed from what I know. a lot of repetitive and firm "NO"s and physical correction. The first week was VERY overwhelming to the point I wasn't sure I could handle it.

Chews on the sofa cushions, pillows, blankets, carpet, baseboards, door corners, sofa legs, stove drawer handle, my very nice coffee table, my snake plant :'(  Every single time, a firm NO and physically moving her away from doing whatever it was. From what I read online (I found a group of IG's with 50,000 members, it's been super helpful) chewing is a very common thing with IG's and also just puppy's in general. But like everything, there's a hundred different opinions on "how" to do it right. Some extremes say to spank or spray with a water bottle, other's say being "too harsh" will make the dog fear you, or other humans, or other males, etc.

I know it'll be worth the work of discipline in the end, though!

My wife is afraid of disciplining the dog, for the same reason you're citing.
I have no issue. I also followed tips to establish that I was the "alpha" of the household (yuk yuk), such as not allowing my pup to eat until she was me take a bite first.
If you're the alpha, they will always defer to you.

So even though my wife was kinder, the dog defers to me first in most matters.

:) Thanks man! You'll have to see her sometime. I've introduced her to 4 other dogs now, 1 big one (she was very submissive towards), but the smaller dogs she playfully chased (and she's too fast for them, they get fed up haha)..
I really want an Italian greyhound. Hopefully in their older years they get as lazy as regular greyhounds.

I don't think I've ever met a puppy that doesn't chew at least a little.

A dog isn’t looking for a best friend. They are looking for stability and direction. It’s really important to be consistent in your responses to behaviour. You almost have to be bi-polar, really, really ,really positive and then really, really, really firm/harsh. They need to know what’s expected of them and how they learn that is primarily by your reactions in that given moment. Like Jory said, a good relationship with your dog is based on respect, not how good you are at cuddles.

It's all about 90% love, 10% fear.

And once she has all of her shots, I'd highly recommend puppy school. Even if you have some good basics down pat. I took Avi to puppy school when he was 1.5 years old to ensure that we had a good foundation. And now he is one of the best behaved dogs that I know.

As introduced into the forums in the stoked thread, This is Mavis.
MVIMG_20180921_085438 by mason rice, on Flickr

The old lady and I discussed introducing a new member into our family last weekend. We decided that we would take the search slowly and wait for a puppy to choose us. I tagged her in a post that our local shelter and pointed her out of the litter of 12. That night we filled out a forum just to look at her and the next day we got the call that we are approved. We set up a time later that day to view her. She is very quite and very reserved. Out of curiosity we asked to view the rest of the puppies and it was anarchy. They were all savages, ripping around yapping and causing trouble. Meanwhile Mavis is curled up on our lap relaxing. We took her home that night.

She is very smart. already figured out potty training at 8 weeks old. we taught her her name, sit, stay, and come in the first 2 days! She fits right in with the family and even gets along with our bitter old lab

I'll admit I am old. In my day of tuning cars, all you needed was a long flat blade screwdriver, a custom bent 9/16" wrench, and a timing light!
