$7.00 fix for $85.00 oem part- glove box stopper fix
« on: May 07, 2013, 08:37:57 pm »
My wife's 2002 impreza 2.5ts has had a glove box that drops all the way open due to the little plastic dowels that are supposed to stop it, that broke off.  The dowels are molded out of the same piece as the glovebox liner, so they aren't replaceable.  Rally subaru wants $85.00 bucks and two weeks to order one in.  Black gold, out of Nikki doesn't have any comparable year dashes.  My fix cost around $7, a trip to Home Depot and fifteen minutes.

Parts:
2 x's  1 1/2" long 1/4 " plastic bolts.   They are in a little drawer above the rest of the bolts labeled "specialty"

2 x's 1/4 " plastic hex nuts

2 x's 1/4 in acorn nuts

2 x's 1/4 " metal washers

4" piece of surgical tubing

Drill with 1/4 " bit

So all you have to do is drill through the wall of the glove box exactly where the dowel broke.  Next put the plastic bolt through from the inside so the head is flush against the inside of the glovebox.  Now put the metal washer and hex nut on and tighten.  Now put the acorn  nut on. Now all that is left is to cut the surgical tubing in to a 2" piece.   Get the tubing wet so it slides up over the acorn nut and all the way up so it covers the whole bolt and a little will be left over the acorn nut.   Do the same for the other side and presto!  Now you have to squeeze both sides in gently as you close it so the bolt ends get up and into the channels they slide in.   You just fixed the glove box!
Hope this helps someone else from paying way too much for an oem part from the dealership
