6ULs are great. The finish peels on the nickel ones but you can repaint them pretty easily.

Powdercoating or sandblasting them apparently turns them into little shrapnel grenades so I'd avoid that.

Since this seems to be turning into the Miata thread (we need an Alberta Miata forum or something - I want parts and cars) today I found a '96 in Red Deer with all the trimmings but unfortunately it was also a rebuilt title. I'm not gonna own two of those. :(

I had a set of 6ULs on my old Miata. I have lots of time to decide on wheels. I'll throw up a more detailed parts list when I have a chance.

Parts List:

Engine

-   2001+ 1.8 L engine with VVT
-   Racing Beat header
-   Roadstersport 3 exhaust
-   Koyo radiator with Samco hoses
-   Skunk2 throttle body
-   Megasquirt ECU
-   VVTTuner

Drivetrain

-   6-speed transmission

Brakes

-   1.8 L brakes
-   Carbotech AX6 brake pads

Suspension

-   Racing beat front sway bar and MSM rear
-   Xida clubsport coilovers

Exterior

-   Jubiride fender flares

This isn't the full parts list, it's just the highlights. I didn't bother to include the boring stuff like clutch or brake lines. I may go with the Maxim Works header if I can find one for a non-assay rapey price.

The closest thing I found to an Alberta Miata forum is the Canadian Rockies Miata Club email.

What's your opinion on the 6UL's?

I want to pick up some 15x9 6UL's and slap some 225 RS3's on them for the summer but seeing as my car is bone stock at the moment I was wondering if that would be too much grip for the car.

I used them for my Rs. For the price, they're hard to beat (lightweight, wide, designed with the Miata in mind and two valve stems so you can do a nitrogen purge if you want).

Update:

Engine and transmission sourced. I have a 2003 1.8 L with VVT and a 6-speed tranny to pair with it.

Mmmm, VVT torque will be so nice. Make sure to replace those pesky motor mounts and all the seals when the engine's out.

I'm sure ultimatt will also be able to remind you of the value of replacing the clutch hydraulics properly.

Can't wait to see it (drive it?) when it's done. I have a lot of interesting parts for my next NA..

Motor mounts are definitely getting replaced. I might replace the clutch at the same time; put in something smaller and lighter.

What are you doing for a Megasquirt ECU?

I'm assuming you got the 1.8 VVT ECU with the engine when you bought it, but the PNP Megasquirt has some great features that are hard for me to resist (even with a semi-assembled MS2 sitting in the parts bin). PNP or self-built?

Did you get a 1.8 Torsen with the 6-speed?

I was gonna use the Megasquirt with VVT controller ECU. I have a Torsen diff from a different car. So my drivetrain is pretty much setup.

Your differential storage room has much more modern insulation than mine but at least mine has drywall.

1.8 Torsen? You get a driveshaft and cover too? If not I have a spare 1.8 cover I won't need but you're on your own for the d/s.

Yeah I got a driveshaft too but I may buy the 949 unit. Apparently the one I got works, but squeaks.

Let me know if you do. Maybe the 1.8 takeoff shaft can be fixed cheaply.

I'm ordering so much the extra $250 for a driveshaft is just a drop in the ocean at this point.

But how much does shipping increase when you add a driveshaft to your order?

Ideally I'll be shipping it to the border. I'll see what a repair would be though. The car is slowly coming together.

excited to see the outcome of yours, Im currently building my 91 with a 1.8 turbo, MS3, 6 speed, and autokonexion fender and GT flare kit.

If you want to order those Jass performance headlights on the red miata let me know and we could maybe split shipping.

I'm thinking of just going with the E-Codes, at least for now.

Ugh, I hate the sleepy eye headlights and the square sealed beams though. Otherwise everything about that car is going in the right direction... although the jdm corner markers and the sure-to-be-broken "tow hook" in the baby teeth location can go to the dump.

I'd drive it with stock headlights and love it. The wing is a little crazy if the car doesn't actually run anywhere, but it's surprisingly sedate in that shot.

Agreed. I don't hate the small headlight look, but I prefer the big round headlights. I plan on going with either Hella E-Codes, or Cibie E-codes with H4 bulbs.

I actually like the tow hook, I think it goes well with the rest of the car. I wouldn't get a big wing though.

Edit: Updated first post with a more thorough mod list.

The problem with the tow hook is that in that position it's not designed to be a tow hook, it's designed to be a hold-down for the ship on the way over. I'd hate to have a breakdown and have the AMA guy hook up to it.

Those turn signal inlets are getting cheap huh? I'd also be tempted to do a NACA duct extractor on the hood to keep temps down, though with a 1.8 VVT you really don't need to.

Yeah if I got a tow hook, I'd get something a bit better than that, like the RyokuRob set or the Kaaz SCCA set.
