To do that to the JDM's with ABS you pretty much need the HKS mushroom type filter kit:(. They are so expensive for nothing really.

Not to mention most foam filters are crappy ,when it comes to filtration.

I just ended up buying a cheaper ebay mushroom filter, its not as good as a cone filter but it still beats the stock one

What are your impressions of it with a filter?

Do you mean how do i like the difference with the mushroom filter as opposed to the stock filter?
If thats what you were asking, i havent noticed a significant difference in anything except for the fact that i can hear the bov when i shift, and it just looks so much cooler in my engine bay than the stock filter  :)

I'm actually quite surprised you haven't done the second intake resonator delete (next expansion tank just past the 90 deg elbow).  Its really simple to do, and best part is it only costs you a couple bucks to complete the mod with a simple metal travel coffee cup that you cut apart.  It is documented really well on www.legacycentral.org  Which from what I understand also helps that generation of motors.

I've done the same mod.
Everything is louder, I have a hydroshield for rainy days.
Except i lost it, really not cool when water gets in there.

I dont think hot air is much of a problem. But i do take my vent off on nice days and put it back on when it starts to rain, it takes me 10 seconds to do.

Great mod! In fact I did this exact same thing on my 180SX 2 years ago when I got it! I bought a Vibrant MAF adaptor (you called it a 'bracket' i think...) and bought the hugest K&N air intake that would fit!
Not that anybody on this forum is interested... but the parts I used were the Vibrant P# 1997 MAF adaptor and a huge K&N RE-0930 Air filter! In fact it's so big, now that I've stuffed more stuff in that area of my engine bay, it's getting squished on one side...
I think at the time I paid about $30 for the adaptor, and $50 for the filter + GST.

If you don't have the ABS in your Subie I highly recommend to get a huge filter. You want the lowest restriction possible that you can reasonably afford. That vent you have on your hood is dope! I'm going to have to mod my hood and drop one in like that. I don't even think you'll need much of a CAI extension with that! You will continually get a nice fresh air supply from outside your car with that. That's probably why Subaru designed it there in the first place... So that all you need to do is remove the stock airbox and you're one step closer to WRC performance!

I'm not an expert, but dosen't Hydro-lock only occur when you completely submerge the intake in water? Then the engine sucks in water, which isn't easily compressible, and blamo...

Surely a couple of droplets of water, or even rain on the filter, aren't that serious... They'll just get vaporized in the engine intake/head before combustion? (almost the same as setting up water/methanol injection?)

Now with 2 turbo chariots of fury

Any DIY intake is worthy of ++ points.

Intakes cost so much money to buy, and yet are one of the simplest 'add-ons' for the vehicle.  making one for cheap, and have it actually be effective is awesome.

i went to mopac yesterday and installed it at my house in 30 mins (had to do a few modifications), the MAF bracket part number that the guy gave me was vibrant 1994 but they only had 1996 so i took it and made my own holes (theres other marking on it so u can drill ur own!) got a huge 9 inch filter (the biggest one that would fit) cost me 80 bucks in totaly. 21 for bracket and 59 for filter.
