Valve Seat falling = Ticking?
« on: December 12, 2013, 05:38:08 pm »
Hello friends,

I've been testing a few NA Foresters and they all have a relatively loud tick.  All of them have been around the 150~km range for mileage.  After doing hours of research on the internet from people who may or may not know what they're talking about, it comes down to injectors, piston slap, or something in the valve train, but ultimately it's normal and nothing to worry about.

I had a mechanic inspect one potential: a 2005 Forester XS with about 165~km.  Some more history about the car: there is no history.  At least, not maintenance history.  The owner has had it for less than a year, but the car didn't come with any records.  I haven't done a carproof yet.

Anyway, the mechanic determined that the ticking was coming from a passenger side valve, and he thinks the valve seat is falling out.  If I wanted to fix it, he recommended that I could a) adjust the valves, or b) fix the seat and machine the head.

Not that I doubt the mechanic, but I do want a second opinion if there is one.  Does this sound like a reasonable conclusion/solution?  or can it be "normal and nothing to worry about"?

How loud of a tick? Can you hear it inside the car while driving?

How "Subaru familiar" was the mechanic?
If the sea was vodka, and I was a duck.
I would swim to the bottom, and drink my way up.
But the sea isn't vodka, and I'm not a duck.
So give me the vodka, and stfu.
If you're having forum problems, I feel bad for you son, I got 99 problems but your post ain't one.

This. Does he know ticking is basically what Subaru engines do? I always thought it was the injectors. Both my vehicles have a slight tick when idling and I'm outside the vehicle, but definitely can't hear it while driving.

Valve lash is a "normal" thing at 150k.
It was very noticeable on the NAs that I had (300k, 150k, 240k) and is noticeable now on one of my DOHCs (188k)

Just make sure you know the sound difference between "valve lash", "injector tick", and "holy itshay it's HOW much for new heads?"

Thanks for the replies all.

Just to clarify, injector noises remains constant, regardless of engine temperature, where as valve noises should dissipate as the engine warms up?
