full boost in all gears, excpet 5th..
« on: January 09, 2014, 11:01:47 pm »
hey guys, 95 gc8, just put inb a robs 440 tune.. i tried installing an mbc, but turn out it was buggered.. so im still using the stock bcs. it was running fine for about a week, full boost all the time (16 psi) and now these past couple days it will boost to 16 in 3rd and 4th, but soon as i get into 5th gear ill get to about 10 psi then i get a boost cut, then 7psi MAX in every gear, untill i shut the car off and restert it. then same thing all over in 5th.

i noticed my knock sensor goes off in the higher rpms, and also it goes on when i get that boost cut.
i havent had time to do a proper ecu reset, but i dont have any cels on right now.

is this a buggered bcs? any help to point me in the right direction would be great. thanks!

oh one more thing, i did fill up at a petrothis tank instead of shell that i always go to.. 91 octane. dont know if that could be a factor

Stop boosting in 5th. You can blow the motor. There is no need to be boosting in a cruise gear.
Your strongest boosting gears are 3rd/4th

Get another MBC and test to see if the EBC is out.

also, if you did 91, you might just be detonating a little bit. Burn the tank out, and fill up with your regular stuff. Do you have a 20G, or a 20K?

I lol'd.

but yeah, totally this. Don't accelerate in 5th, it puts strain on the entire drivetrain. Downshift to 4th.

Its your gas, stay away from petro.

fill up the tank with some shell 91 or 94 and reset ecu. Do the proper ecu reset shown here and the car will default all sensor values and display any error codes: http://www.perth-wrx.com/vb/stock-ecu-discussion/30025-gc8-engine-control-unit-reset-proper-way.html

Also, even if its not this specific problem, change out the stock bcs soon, its not designed to handle the higher psi and will not respond as fast/protect spiking as well as an mbc.

alright, thanks for the heads up about 5th.
never going to petro again haha i filled up with shell 91 today, no knock sensor light, no boost cut. runs good.
i already ordered an mbc thinking that was the problem so i will be installing that when it comes here. ill reset my ecu when i get a chance.

Im sure the gas is fine.

Gas is practically all the same between the big three (esso, shell, petro)

I work as a terminal operator for esso. We ship out fuel for shell and petro all the time. And they do the same for us. And the same for eachother.

All the gas is the same. If you purchased any shell gas anytime between august and november in edmonton, guess what? It was more then likely esso gas.

I'm a little ignorant on the subject but then why is shell 91 advertised as ethanol free when all the others "boast" about containing up to 10% ethanol?

(note, I use husky 94)

Because there might be ethanol residual in the hose/pump/etc.

I can GUARANTEE you that Esso 91 has NO ethanol in it.

Our RUL 87 gas may contain anywhere between 5-10 percent depending on what we are blending the shipping tanks at. We have been shipping out at 5 percent ethanol content for the past 2 months because we are over stocked on gas.

Short and simple:
At least 10% (or 15%, I can't remember the exact number) of all the gas they sell has to contain ethanol (this is an AB law/regulation/whathaveyou). They way they get away with it is by putting 10-15% in 87, 5-10% in 89, and 0% in 91 (as it's "pure"). Since there are no AB refineries that can make 94 w/o Ethanol, Husky uses the Ethanol to boost the octane rating.

I'm reasonably certain that it's 5% as well.
I hate newpaper articles, as it's not easy to check references, but this is an interesting read:
