Nothing. The JDM mini was built in Britain and then exported to Japan. My key says "Made in Britain" right on it.

Oh wait.. The manual is in Japanese. That's about it.

That's awesome. I love the original British Leyland Mini.

Love these cars, my buddy brought one over when we just got out of highschool. The plan was to put a K20 into it, but he ran out of funds and had to sell the car.

On a serious note, what kind of modifications can you actually do to the car, can you upgrade the suspension and drivetrain?

They have full kits where you can swap in D/B/K series honda motors. They come with coilovers, subframes, etc etc. You can drop in an AWD subframe for the CRV tranmission, joined to a turbo honda motor, putting out 400AWHP. These things can go pretty nuts. Ideally, while this is a "project", it'll be more of a character car than some crazy car. If the stock 1275cc motor goes, I'll drop in a cheap honda motor. Otherwise, it'll just be comfort mods, such as a stereo, a 12v socket, etc etc.

Is there anything you can do without going that crazy? I could see a swap snowballing in terms of price and commitment. Case in point, my swap.

I've seen some turbo stuff, but I wouldn't trust the stock motor too much, unless you needed it for classing issues. I could buy the full kit (which has everything other than the motor) for <$4k, pick up a K20 for <$2k, and have quadruple the horsepower for $6k. This would also upgrade the suspension and transmission at the same time.

There are a few guys who will rebuild/build up the 1.3L motor, but considering all parts need to be ordered since nothing is available locally (seriously, I have to order the windshield wipers and oil filters online), whereas honda partsare locally available, it's a fairly common occurence. Not to mention a Honda motor is fairly reliable.

This thing rocks!  It's fantastically full of character.  I love it.  Two questions

1.  How much did you pay for it (including shipping)?
2.  Hows the fuel mileage?

I paid just under $6000 (all together) to get it to Calgary. Then it was just OOP and registration on top of that. As for fuel mileage, I'm not 100% sure yet. The tank is approx $20 to fill with premium (since I can't find anything definitive on what octane to use), and it "supposed" to get ~5.1L/100km at the best, and 9.6l/100km at worst. Worst case being draining the entire tank doing 140kph (top speed, so 6500rpm in 4th gear). I haven't actually gone through an entire tank to tell.

Remind me to buy you one of those white rubberized sheets that British car owners keep under their cars when they park to figure out what fluids are coming out.

There was dark stuff on the ground and I didn't put my fingers in it to test if it was oil or water. If it was coolant you *really* need to flush it as it was black.

Well, when I checked at home, it was coolant. But it was recently flushed. I'm just not sure with what.

Most already imported ones were around 8-9k on Kijiji. Most LHD classics were barely-running rustbuckets that would need a full restore, and they were listed for ~5.5k

Winter tires are in at yella's kal tire (I think?). Got a call from Steve, but I just don't have a way to get the mini there.

Wouldn't it be easier to just take the tiny wheels there in the glovebox of a normal car?

It would, if I didn't have surface parking with no jack, jackstands, or tools.

Jackstands?  Can't you have a friend or two just hold it up for an hour?

My close-living friends include Jeff and Mike. I wouldn't trust them to hold a pillow for an hour or two.
