Timing Belt and Water Pump, 2007 Outback 2.5i
« on: February 17, 2014, 11:04:05 pm »
We're selling one of our cars this summer and I just want to document the timing belt change for the future owner.

Did the timing belt and water pump on my 2007 Outback this weekend. Nothing out of the ordinary other than the imminent failure of two of the idler pulleys on the belt. See the video below.

Start by opening your hood

...a moment or two later you should be at this stage

The new parts

Remove the water pump

Install the new one

The wear items minus the cam pulley

New parts installed

New thermostat

With the radiator out it gives you a good chance of cleaning in between the AC condenser and radiator

Put everything back together

That's really it. Easy and fun.

I bought this car a month and a half ago and it was making an odd sound on cold start-up. When I listened under the hood I could have sworn the noise was coming from the AC tensioner pulley. Naturally I ordered a new one. It turns out it was two of the timing belt pulleys. In the video I spin the pulley very gently. Just imagine what it sounded like spinning even at a few thousand RPM. Needless to say I'm happy I did the service. Fun fact: the belt looked perfect with no stress cracks in it at all.

For reference the car was at 176530 kms. That is about 14000 kms overdue.

Why did the cam gear have to come off?

I've seen this in other instructional videos, but didn't need to remove it to do the water pump when we did a SOHC Forester a couple weeks ago...

from what I can see on alldata is that the cam gear is in the way of a plastic cover that is overtop of the waterpump so it has to be taken off

Colek, that's what I researched as well. The plastic cover behind the cam pulley is in the way. I just took it as gospel and took the cam and cover off. Although Grant, that thought did run through my mind. Now coming to think of it I had to sneak the cover in behind the water pump edge when putting things back together.
