Yesterday I tried to remove the rear diff fill plug (before the drain plug). Whelp, that was a steaming pile of failure. I even tried applying pressure using the jack and was lifting the entire rear of the car up without any travel in the plug. Next time, ghetto garage.

On a positive note, there is very little rust under the rear of the car at 200k.

I used a hammer + wrench. Put load on bolt, then hit the wrench with a hammer. Doesn't need to be crazy force. Works better for breaking tight bolts than linear increases in force. I've seen this work plenty of times where PB blaster and long bolt stripping snipes fail. Anywho, mine was the same way literally a couple of weeks ago and that worked.

I tried that too. I'm going to have another crack at it today.

I also have some Kroil sitting in the threads since yesterday.

Yup that worked on mine too, shock the bolt. But hey at least you got stopped on the drain plug not the full plug after you already had it draining.... Ask me how much more fun that is!

Also nice car, always was a fan of fast wagons.

This is exactly what happened with Jeff's car. We were lifting the car using the drain bolt.

I would swim to the bottom, and drink my way up.
But the sea isn't vodka, and I'm not a duck.
So give me the vodka, and stfu.

I bought a new syphon pump yesterday because of exactly this.  managed to get about 600ml out of the rear diff.  not perfect but ill take it.  only way that plug is gonna come out is with some torching.

also, i have a 30mm wrench for the upper bolt.   but i dont know if thats what you need.  rear diff sensor....

I've never understood that little star on the diff. Does that mean you can only put in Kosher gear oil?

Lol.

I guess I was lucky with mine, I got both bolts out with just a breaker bar and cheater pipe.

Also, if you haven't removed them yet, remove the rubber strips from the rear fender lips, clean them super well (both above and below the lips), then do the method that I used on my rockers to seal them up.

The rubber strips trap so much dirt and salt that you can clearly see on my TS where the worst of the rear fender rust started when you look where they used to be.

Yeah, uckfay.

The transition between new vehicles and old ones requiring more attention can be a little bit tricky.
Here's hoping running low on coolant isn't terminal.

I thought this at first...

While the cleanliness might suggest that it's something of Asstuna's...it's just TOO damn clean. No Canadian '05 WRX can look that clean.

Plus the date stamp on the pictures says 2007. Something tells me the 'Tuna would not stand for an incorrectly configured camera.

I'm gonna go with stolen pics  :haplo90:

Going to wait for better weather so I can perform some rust preventative treatment at the same time as I install these:

So thanks to a dicky hose clamp I had to get some emergency work done. Wasn't sure if it was radiator, hoses, clamps but I could see coolant pissing out at a time where I could least afford to be stuck working on a car (time is money). So, off to VEX she goes. They squeezed me in last minute and pre-ordered *everything* which possibly could have been at fault.

The result:
- a tightened hose clamp (yeah, fffuuuuuu)
- coolant flush at 201070 km
- replaced thermostat (you're in there anyway, so why not?)
- installed block heater
- heightened paranoia about checking fluid levels in an old car
- resolution to do more work on my own car

Also had a crack at cleaning the passenger seat and floor carpet with Einszett Blitz all-purpose cleaner, a cheap carpet steamer and a shop vac.

Looks clean, is still hideously damp and smells marvellous.

Next time, the sun needs to be out, the garage door open and +20 uckfaying degrees celsius. I won't be attempting any more (with the tools I have) until it's warm.

I know my rad hose clamps are leaking on my 03 because I can see crusted coolant everywhere, but I'm waiting until it's warm to fix it. In the meantime, pouring more coolant into it and getting the occasional whiff when I park reminds me to fix it.

Classic smell of any +4 year old subaru.
The smell of burnt coolant spewing from the engine bay on a cold day, or warm.
My WRX had nothing but leaky coolant problems, even with brand new hoses and such.

Yes, well, there was no smell to give it away. It's a smell I hate, so I'm on top of it ASAP.
