Mobil 1 75W90 Sythetic Gear Oil
« on: April 05, 2014, 11:51:29 am »
I have a 2007 Subaru STI, and it was time to do my transmission, and diff service.  So many variations of oils on the market, so I decided I would go with what was recommended by the dealer for gear oil.

They carry 75w90 Mobil 1.  So I arranged to get what I needed, took the car to the shop(great having your own shop to do your own work), and proceeded to change the fluids.  Everything went as planned, and away I went.

At first glance everything was fine, shifted great, and drove good.  Got home, parked the car, and went about my normal business.  Next day I was going out, and now the fluid was cold(cold day), and as i backed out of the garage the noise was horrible, and you could feel the driveline crunching.  WTF! nursed it around the block, and the noise started to go away.....thought well maybe the top gears didn't get enough fluid as it is new, and it ran off.  So next day, same thing when it was cold, as it warms up the crunching noise goes away.  I now know this is bad, so call VEX, and get some Red Line, and change out my fluid.

Instantly the noise is gone, and it is smooth as silk.

DO NOT RUN MOBIL 1 in your transmission!! It might be good in warm climates, but it does not like the cold!

Did it make noise in the rear diff too? Planning to run redline lightweight in the tranny and some generic brand out back.

Yes, I re-did the front first, and could feel it in the back(and the rear is pretty tough from what im told), so I switched the rear out today, and silky smooth, and silent.

In Edmonton try Invison Auto at 3238 Parsons Rd or surprisingly Argyll Motorsports has pretty good prices as they carry it for motorbike transmissions.

IIRC I had to go to Invision to get Motul 90PA for the rear diff and it wasn't a stellar deal.  But the Motul 75-90 trans fluid I got at Argyll and the cost was pretty good.

I usually do the Canadian tire -> part source -> Napa -> jbs power center route but I'll try Argyll's motor sports.  Never heard of Invision auto.  MoPac I thought was just american cars, I guess for oil doesn't matter.

Mopac specializes in American cars, but they have access to lots of different stuff.

i found petrocan synthetic 75w-90 to be much smoother than motul gear 300.  Even in the temps dip below -30 /40

Plus its canadian made and cheaper.    :D

check the specs if you want, but its right up there with the rest.

I found Motul to be notchy by comparison.

I used Lucas 75W90 and had no issues with it.  Find it works in cold weather too.
