Making really good progress on the Foz Steve.

Such a big improvement from the last time I saw it! I'll have to get you that ver.8 I/C one of these days.

Great detailing job. I have a love/hate relationship with my white fozzy as theres not much that can be done with the paint to make it look better, on the other hand that also makes it low maintenance.

Next task is to access the center differential and locate my bad bearing/bearings.
Hint. Hint. Haha.  >:D

After more driving and paying close attention I can actually hear the gear whine in all gears and speeds, just a lot quieter outside of the 40-80kmph range. But still only present when in gear. Though I'd hazard saying during the lower speeds the gear whine seems minor to the point of being normal tranny noises.

Well the last few days have been interesting to say the least. Engine now idles very rough(No Cel) but seems to drive just fine when under load. Maybe it has slightly less power but I would say it is not as smooth as before.

I started digging around on the internet and learned about those ittshay filters in the banjo bolts for the AVCS.

I went to pull out the passenger side filter and this is what I found.

Thankfully the other half fell out of the vehicle while I was pulling it out but some of the screen could have made its way through the engine. I managed to take both of the filters out and the engine still has a rough idle (1 cylinder seems to be misfiring). I changed spark plugs 1,000 km ago and everything has been working perfectly prior to a previous days ago.

I am also working on finding my transmission noise (hoping it is bearings) and here is what I found when I drained the fluid.

Once I cleaned some of the shavings I found these large chunks.....

More findings to follow.

Rough idle, fine under power, I would blame vacuum leak. Although with chunks of your transmission falling out, I'd say that's the least of your problems.

I would swim to the bottom, and drink my way up.
But the sea isn't vodka, and I'm not a duck.
So give me the vodka, and stfu.

The plan is to deal with the transmission first then the engine. I keep reading about blown engine so I am hoping that is not the case and it is just something simple. Compression test will easily confirm that though.

Here's a good link I have used for my Foz.

http://www.scoobymods.com/showthread.php/04-forester-xt-rough-idle-11560.html?s=3ebd7f19a60a9ff2cb42d9535bbf999d&

Cole's Notes is oil control valve, MAF, intake leak, O2 sensor, or fuel filter.

I cleaned my MAF regularly, which always made a difference (but I suspect it is because it had an oiled K&N filter).

Hope you get it sorted easily. I'd be surprised if it was anything internal.

How did the transmission sound after you changed the oil? And what did you use for fluid?

Thanks for the information. I pretty much have it narrowed down to those items. I have a new fuel filter that I need to install. I am also going to check the passenger side oil control valve as that is the side that broke into 2 pieces and likely is causing the valves from closing/opening properly.

My plan is to replace the transmission and rear differential fluid with Motul Gear 300 (unless I get advised otherwise) once I pull off the tail section and inspect the transfer gear/ center differential bearings.

Thats sad to see man. My Fozzy is going under the knife tomorrow to get its transmission disassembled. the whining has gotten slowly progressively louder and you can now hear a fant almost ticking noise when slowing to a stop which I hope is a bad roller bearing. My biggest fear atm is that the ring and pinion are damaged. If the front diff is chewed I will likely order in an OBX front LSD to replace it.

What are your thoughts on what those chunks are from? Bearing race?

I am really hoping my issues is in the rear end of the transmission (near the center differential) rather than the front differential. If it is the front differential I guess I should start sourcing a used transmission ASAP.

I am not too sure what the chunks in my transmission are. Could be part of a bearing or part of the case itself (part that supports the transmission bearings ect.)

I will update this thread with progress as I dig into the problem.

ittshay deal. That's a lot of metal filings  :'(

When I drove the car it sounded like it was coming from the rear of transmission, right by the arm rest - so my bet it would be on the center diff as well.

Hopefully it's something as easy as a rag in the throttle body.  ;)

Well as I expected it looks like a piece of the oil filter made its way into the oil control valve. The valve was stuck fully compressed with the plastic piece preventing it to go down. Definitely makes sense why the vehicle ran fine when it was driving but very poor at idle. I was unable to test whether or not the rough idle is fixed as the vehicle is in pieces but I am pretty confident that problem is solved now.

Motul Gear 300 (unless I get advised otherwise)

Redline 75w90 NS.
Not really for any reason other than that's what I've always used in my 5mt and rear diff without any issues.
Just another option, and also I don't like motul unicorn isspay.

Well I am crossing my fingers that my problems are not directly related to the transmission itself and rather a worn out bearing. The transmission shifts smoothly and has never given me any trouble otherwise.

I've seen cars have center diff issues with that fluid. Which is why we don't use it anymore.

Of course you do.

That made my 6mt in the STi shift like a bag of rocks. It was terrible.

I loved the Redline, it shifted super smooth but it gave us center diff problems on a couple of cars. The Motylgear doesn't shift poorly, maybe you used Gear300 instead of Motylgear, Gear300 shifts like poop.

But if it came down to it, I would choose the extra protection over the smoother shifting.

Define center diff issues. Like it destroyed something, or it just caused shudders slippage etc and could be remedied by swapping out the fluid?

It's a fluid. As with all fluids, so long as they meet the minimum spec required, it's opinion. Pretty sure motul heavy cars don't have a perfect record either. I haven't had any issue with redline, I have had issue with motul. You haven't had any issue with motul, you have had issue with redline.
So long as you aren't running that non certified royal purple itshay, use whatever works for you.
