1991 Mazda Miata - Detail 2.0 (Paint Correction+Write-up)
« on: August 16, 2014, 10:15:26 am »
It has been sometime since my last detailing write-up so I thought it was time to post one even though it was a small detail. This detail was part of a facebook giveaway for the Illmotion Sunday School Show & Shine 2014. The winner received my Exterior Protection detail.

Here we have a 1991 Mazda Miata. Overall the vehicle was in pretty good shape with minor scuffs but it was evident that the vehicle has not been detailed in sometime. My detailer OCD kicked in on this one because I couldn't stand how dirty the single stage paint was. I decided to throw in a polished hood into this detail to see how much clarity would be revealed.

Process

Exterior:

Wheels: 1z Colortec Wheel Cleaner with various brushes
Tires: Zep Formula 505 Cleaner & Degreaser
Wheel Wells: Zep Citrus Cleaner (4:1)
Pre-wash: CG Citrus Wash & Gloss via foam cannon
Wash: CG Citrus Wash & Gloss via 2BM & Wool Wash Mitt
Decontamination: Carpro Trix (Iron and Tar Remover)
Dry: Waffle Weave Towels
Polish (Hood Only): Blackfire Total Polish & Seal w/ Tangerine Hydrotech Pads via Rupes LHR15ES (5.5” pads)
Paint Protection: Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant 3.0
Tire Dressing: Optibond Tire Gel
Trim Dressing: Wolfgang Exterior Trim Sealant
Glass: Stoner Invisible Glass with Rain Repellent via Glass Towel
Exhaust Polishing: P21s Polishing Soap
Wheel Polishing: P21s Polishing Soap
Wheel Sealant: Blackfire Crystal Seal

Total Time: 6 Hours

Amazing.  Thank you for these threads.  I know the entire process is time consuming, but I love just scrolling through the pictures and, "through the miracle of time," finished product.

Same here. It also makes me wish I had an excuse to come to Edmonton, and you weren't booked up for the next 18 years.

I would swim to the bottom, and drink my way up.
But the sea isn't vodka, and I'm not a duck.
So give me the vodka, and stfu.

If you help with the vehicle detail we could probably do this in 1 day. I am sure you can figure out some excuse to come to Edmonton.

The owner brought the vehicle back for a complete paint correction. I am very happy with how it is turning out.

The trunk was also recently painted and here is how it looks finished out.

This week I performed a 1 step correction (paint enhancement) on a previous clients 1991 Mazda Miata.
The single stage paint was a pleasure to work with and it is awesome to see the vehicle white like it was 25 years ago.

Process
Exterior:
Wash: ONR via Microfiber Towels
Decontamination 1: CarPro PolyShave Towel
Dry: Waffle Weave Towels
Tape: 3m Automotive Tape
Paint Thickness: Taken using Digital Coating Thickness Gauge
Polish: Scholl Concepts S30+ w/ Orange Buff n Shine Pads via Rupes LHR15ES (5.5” pads) and GG6 (4” pads)
Surface Prep: DP Prep Polish
Paint Protection: Black Label Surface Coating

During Photos:

I performed my test spot on the front fender to figure out what combination of pad and product would yield the best results. Sure enough the combination I used on my previous detail did the trick. Not only was the paint swirled it was very oxidized (due to being neglected single stage paint). Not only were the defects removed but the clarity and color of the paint was enhanced.

Man, that's much better. I hope seat safety switch doesn't see this, he might get some bad ideas.

Dat camber tho :o

Paint looks fantastic though! To bad they color matched his trunk to the previous, uncorrected paint.

I got the whole story and the painter color matched the trunk to the old mirrors because the vehicle was in storage for the winter. His plan is to get the front fenders and trunk resprayed.

how much of a hard on do you get when you reach this step of detailing a car.  To me, these foamy pictures are the best no matter what car is hiding underneath
