itshay. Good catch.

I even wrote that down at the top of the page in my list - old habits die hard I guess.... That said, this stuff is basically Dexron VI which is backwards compatible with Dexron III/old ATF (since they no longer make dex III). Regardless I'll most likely go back and get some ATF.

Alright well this post is mostly to help people out who have future part number questions for their EJ20G JDM Forester T/TB or S/TB. I ended up ordering the following from 42autosports after going back and fourth with them for a few weeks about the correct part numbers.

Timing Belt Kit
Idle Double Roller Left Lower - Qty 1 - OEM# 13085 AA080
Idler Double Style Bearing Smooth Roller - Qty 2 - OEM# 13073 AA142
Timing Belt - Qty 1 - OEM# 13028 AA072
T-Belt Tension Adjuster - Qty 1 - OEM# 13033 AA042

Spark Plugs - NGK BKR6EIX #6418 (These are iridium plugs in the stock heat range)

Oil Filter - Mahle Oil Filter #OC711 (Don't quote me on this, but apparently the new Subaru filters are made from Honeywell, the same place that makes Fram. They have apparently do not have the same filtering capabilities that the old Subaru filters had).

Block Heater - OEM# A0910AS100

Air Filter - OEM# 16546 0Z000
Fuel Filter - OEM# 42072 AA011
Cabin Air Filter - OEM# G3210 FC000
AC Belt - Bando #73323 AC000
PS Belt - Bando #80921 8270

Still need to figure out what battery size and what brakes (rotors and pads) will work on the car.

Quite the list you got there.

Are you gonna replace the transmission fluid? If so, what brand do you think you'll use?

But the sea isn't vodka, and I'm not a duck.
So give me the vodka, and stfu.

I used Amsoil in my s2000 and my compression raised 50 psi. Also my wheel bearing noise went away.

I ordered in some 98 USDM Forester rotors and pads for the car after confirming they will fit.

Also the car is currently on its way to Edmonton and I should be able to pick it up mid-next week  :) Most of the parts I ordered are expected to show up around the same time, so maybe this ittshay "build" thread will get interesting.

So I got a text this morning and the car was ready for pick up, so I skipped the rest of school and went to pick it up. The battery is pretty much dead and would barely turn the car over, but after a jump and adding some fuel  I got it running.

Initial impressions: The steering feels pretty good for a vehicle its size. Unfortunately there is a quite a bit of body roll but maybe some sway bars can fix that. The brake are pitted and a bit warped, so the braking is complete itshay with no bite what-so-ever. The tires are cracked and past the wear lines - since it's a bit wet the car would actually swing a out if I gave it some gas around a corner. Good thing I ordered new brake and bought new tires. Other than that the car pulls smoothly... I can't believe how quiet it is - my stock 98 auto civic is louder. The gearing ratio of the T/TB is greater/longer than the S/TB so I wouldn't call the car fast, but it could hold it's own against a mini van packed full of kids or possibly a special needs bus.

When I got home I tested the coolant's freeing point (the car will be sitting for a few weeks until I can get some time to work on it) to make sure nothing freezes as it gets cold. I also drained the wiper fluid as it was just water. I gave the car a quick inspection and everything looks good besides a small leak from the crankcase ventilation gasket. It has this weird foam insulating itshay on the top mount and the intake tube to the cold side of the turbo that's going to have to come off as it looks like itshay and is flaking off anyhow.

It's got some weird antenna things already around the car that I'm going to remove. I'm assuming they're related to the nav unit....

Antenna's like that are related to the nav unit. Apparently some of them are able to be used to watch tv in Japan. Crazy...

Looks great though! Congrats!

Thanks!

I'm going to be removing all of them as soon as I have some time to trace wiring. There are three in total, along with the hug nav thing on the centre consul.

Also, more parts :)

Re: The JDM Foz - Engine Guru's Help
« Reply #36 on: October 30, 2014, 08:10:22 pm »
Okay, so when I picked up the car I noticed it was pretty loud during cold start up. I thought it was just a bit of piston slap because when I started driving the noise became quieter as the engine warmed up. As soon as the engine rose to about 2/3rds of operating temperature the noise was no longer audible from inside the cabin. Thus I ignored it.

Anyhow, I was thinking about it today so I went and started up the car and closely listened to the noise. I am 100% percent positive it is coming within the engine.

It pretty much sounds exactly this BEFORE he blips the throttle and the bearings tell him to uckfay off.

Or like this before he revs the engine. But just quieter.

Anyhow, I let it get to operating temp and the noise is still audible (although much quieter) and increases with RPM till about 2000 until it sounds like a healthy engine.

Is this normal? I can't decide if its due to the layout of the engine making it that much easier to hear crankcase noise or if the bearings are at the early stages of letting go...... I also can't tell if it's piston slap, rod knock or noisy lifters. I know its a Subaru and they build itshay engines where KM don't really matter, but there is only 56,000 km on the clock.

Chances are I'll take a video of it and post it up.

Should be fairly healthy. I'm pretty sure most ej20g's run a little loud. You're probably just not used to the noise.

You've heard my car before, noisy diesel sounding uckfayer. My rs I had with 180000kms sounded similar. You just don't have a loud exhaust to cover the ugly Subaru engine sound.

That being said I haven't heard your car in person yet, and it is a jdm Subaru, so their is a 90% chance it's uckfayed.

this is what a boxer engine sounds like in the early stages of rod knock or bearing issues, if it sounds like this and you keep driving it it will get significantly worse in a short period of time. run away fast

here is another example

here is along the lines the sounds of a healthy boxer,

If you want, I can quickly run to my rex that's sitting in the garage and grab a quick video. It's been healthy since I got it and ran like an absolute tank before it got into an accident.

It also hasn't been run in a few days (I start it up every now and then just to keep it solid), so it would be from a cold start.

Let me know.

Yeah the engine is knocking. Stephen came over and we both agreed. I'm just uploading a video now.

Also, the car sounds exactly like what stealthbombing posted up in the first video. I'm sure steve will agree.

Right now I'd rather not say. I kinda want to see how this plays out and cool down a bit before I make any comments. Also, up until this point he's been great and really helpful... this problem seems to lie more within the inspection process than anything.

Also here's the video.

that sucks man, Subaru's love their oil but once they go a tad dry a rod comes loose really easily, its a shame because the rods are forged (in a ej257) not sure about the rest..

good luck
