is this even legal to drive with ? looks awesome but I'm sure 99% of the population are going to be wondering whats going on

Most rigs shots are done at _super_ low speeds...  Like having your friends push the car & then duck down while you take an exposure that's 1s or more.

Otherwise the bounce (or even engine vibration) will make them blurry.

I'm guessing it's one of those things that they'll drive to a remote location, set it up, and take some shots. Probably won't be rolling on deerfoot with it ;D

Exactly like snake and grant said, you typically don't turn the car on for these because of the vibration! You move very slowly, and take long exposure images.

The concept is very simple! The car and the camera are "static" as one object. They move in unison. It needs to be very rigid and sturdy!!
The next thing to this might be a very small plastic covered wire tow wire. I saw the 20ft cables at Home Depot for $10 I'll just need a hook on the end. Should work perfectly!!

Image will be up first thing in the morning and I'm very excited!

The result!!! It's not perfect, but it's certainly a good start in my eyes. My ND filter was super blurry with water spots... and I forgot my shutter release so I was running back and forth from car to camera. A little over-exposed, and my post production needs more practice - but I'm very pleased.

I've updated my first post with a little back-story which I felt needed to be shared. I will be posting more information soon about how you can have your car rigged and setup for a shot like this. I will also be revealing a contest soon!

Looks good dude.
If the sea was vodka, and I was a duck.
I would swim to the bottom, and drink my way up.
But the sea isn't vodka, and I'm not a duck.
So give me the vodka, and stfu.
If you're having forum problems, I feel bad for you son, I got 99 problems but your post ain't one.

Thanks guys! Yup... first shot is certainly over exposed, but considering it was my first I'm still so happy with that! I have lots to learn still, but it will come with practice..

Here is my second rig shot/ setup. Went out earlier this morning to find a nice location. When I first got to the location I was aiming for a 10 second exposure.
30 minutes later after getting the rig setup, I was down to a 4 second exposure!! Too slow, again! I gotta get it right. Might be heading out tonight for a bit of a project to try again...

I'm very pleased with how this image turned out. Exception? I forgot to have a driver sitting in the car... doh! Was so focused on getting my exposure and composition down I forgot to shoot a quick image before moving to get me sitting in the drivers seat LOL..Oh well!! Like I said, I have lots to learn still but it will come with practice.

The second shot is fantastic!  I think its a perfect balance of motion. I wouldn't worry about the driver so much. LHD... Right?

First (small) shoot in the bag! We were pretty rushed setting this shot up as the sun was going down real quick.. but still pretty pleased with the results!
If you think shooting black cars is a b*tch - try rigging a black car and cloning out not only the rig but the entire reflection in the black paint hahahaha......

i like the bottom filter, how is it you get the car to look like its going so fast if you are barely moving ?

Such is the beauty and magic of long exposures. If you release the shutter for a longer period of time, the sensor has more time to collect information (or film has to burn).  The rig allows the camera to remain static with the car, while everything else is moving through the sensor.

Take a 1s long exposure while you hold the camera & you'll see just how much blur there can be.  :P

I really like the shot you took with the camera almost directly off the front of your car with the sun in the background, the blur lines all bring your focus right in to the car! Nice!
