Accidently sprayed wd-40 on brakes and lugnut threads.
« on: October 11, 2014, 05:47:19 pm »
Am I in any trouble here?  I wiped as much wd-40 off the threads as I could, and the brake pads already absorbed the rest of the wd-40 on the rotors before I could get at it...

the lug nuts seemed to torque down normally with the rest of the wheels, using less that 1/8th of a turn at most at 80 ft/lbs.

Am I'm overthinking my lug nuts will come loose at some point? or a re-torque in a week should be good enough?

Long story, I was trying to save my aluminium hub centric ring that was corroded on. wd-40 with no nozzle was a bad idea to begin with.  I had to pry and destroy them with a screwdriver and hammer anyway.

Yeah I'm probably over thinking it.  To much subreddit "justrolledintotheshop"

order some new plastic hub rings as well..  Anybody need a destroyed set of aluminium hub-centric rings  :'(

For the rotor, I would've sprayed it off with brake cleaner (but it'll burn off since WD40 has such a low temperature (and is such a ittshay lubricant)).

For the threads, I'd ignore it.  At the same ft/lb the lubricated threads will apply slightly more clamping force, but I doubt enough to cause any issues or stretch/fatigue anything.

well my dad broke 2 out of 6 studs on his crossover due to loose lugnuts, so lets say I'm overly cautious since then.  (that and I drove it with loose lugnuts on deerfoot...)

His fault for driving a crossover.
If the sea was vodka, and I was a duck.
I would swim to the bottom, and drink my way up.
But the sea isn't vodka, and I'm not a duck.
So give me the vodka, and stfu.

My friend did his breaks on his itshay heap truck in my garage, i wasnt paying attention to what he was doing, (drunk as uckfay) and the dude torqued his lugs by hand with a 12 inch ratchet, with the tire still in the air.

Long story short, a tire flew off driving down 22nd in Stoon and did about 4 grand worth of damage to a corolla.
It's an 08.
It was a lemon before it even achieved rebuilt status.

How could you not have noticed loose lug nuts? It generally makes sounds and vehicle don't feel so good lol

Oh it definitely made sounds, we weren't sure where it was coming from.  It ran smooth till you hit 80 km/h at that point I was also thinking a wheel weight fell off.  I think having a 6 lug pattern made it less obvious the wheel was loose.  It wasn't till he re-tightened the lugs the studs broke off on two of em.
