2014 Phillips Snowcase Advent Calendar
« on: December 01, 2014, 08:27:50 am »
Day 1 of 24:

Electric Unicorn White IPA.

From Phillips:  This craft-brewed seasonal stallion blends mystical Belgian yeast with fresh American hops in an unfiltered wheat ale.  Aromas of mango and coriander lead to flavours of sweet banana and citrus fruit.  All balanced with a healthy dose of citrus bitter hops.

I get the mango/coriander taste.  For a IPA, this is pretty mild.  Mediocre.

I'd give it a 6/10.

I like it, for an IPA (which I'm not usually a fan of).

All the bitterness is up front, and there's no long astringent grapefruit aftertaste.

I'd drink it again, and that's rare for IPA.

That Amber lager won out between the two beers for today...

It's still a toss up for me.  I enjoyed both of them.

Day 3 of 24:

Octofox India Pale Ale:

From Phillips:  Straight from our hoptomology lab, hybrid hop combinations alter IPA structures to yield unique flavour sequences. With soft citrus and fresh pine balanced against a full-bodied malt backbone, Octofox is selectively brewed to be broadly enjoyed.

Very interesting, my box is definitely in a different order.  Today I have Filthy Dirty IPA, yesterday was Red Racer IPA.

Are you sure you got the Phillips case? lol Red Racer and Filthy Dirty aren't Phillips beers.

I never met a Red Racer I didn't like though,  so you likely won't be disappointed.

Where did you buy this?
My brother is making his own beer right now and loves IPAs, I'd love to get him an early christmas gift if these are still available.

Call some Sobey's Liquor stores around your area.  They may still have some in stock.

Time to start posting pictures of your beers!  I'm sad I didn't grab a 3rd calendar this year.

Will do, thank you.

Edit: Called around, looks like the Tuscany location has tons of the Phillips sets left, if anyone else is interested.

I will start another thread, I have been taking photos of both beers though, I will start to take singles.

I'm a couple days behind and only now starting to catch up. I am usually not a fan of IPA's.  I find most to be bland and unmentionable.  I loved this one though.  The aftertaste is citrus deliciousness that I want to have more of.  I have seen this one in my local before,  and I'll certainly be picking it up.

I'm not usually a fan either since most IPAs try to be obscenely bitter.  This one definitely was trying to be more than that.

I enjoyed it.  Bright citrus flavour that was balanced against the bitter-pine flavour associated with IPAs.  I'd drink it again.

Day 4 of 24:

Ginger Beer.  Repeat from last year.

From Phillips:  With more ginger than Gilligan can handle, some might be surprised at the instant blast of flavour and aroma from this true ginger beer, but that doesn't take away from its sheer quaffability.  It's killer with sushi! Also incredible with cheeses--try it with Peorino Antico Mugellow, a Spanish pasteurized sheep mik cheese.

Review:  Not my first choice but not a terrible beer.  It's definitely reminds you it's a ginger beer but at least it's not an overpowering taste.

Day 5 of 24:

Amnesiac Douple IPA.

From Phillips:  Uh, we forget...Oh Yeah, this is a big beer. Mind blowing amounts of hops give this beer tons of flavour and aroma. Not for the faint of heart. The bigger, meaner cousin to the Hop Circle IPA.

Pair with: smoked brisket, grilled lamb, Gorgonzola or Cambozola cheeses

Repeat from last year.  I'm thinking next year I'll get a different calendar.

Review:  It's not just an IPA but a double IPA.  Drinkable but not my fav.

I feel like I would have liked this beer better if I was eating something that would go really well with ginger...

(It also reminded me of just having "ginger tea", aka. ginger chunks steeped in hot water, when I have a headache)

I liked this one more-so than the red IPA.  My wife enjoyed it as well(first beer so far she liked).
