Dyno Numbers & Information
« on: January 27, 2015, 11:18:08 am »
On our forum, Toronto Subaru Club, we have a thread about some of the cars we have built, modded and tuned at the shop.  I thought this information would be nice to share with our fellow Subaru owners across Canada.  We work with a local tuner and racer to provide Dyno and Race services to compliment what we do at Touge Tuning.  Sasha Anis is well known for his accomplishments on and off the track having won in Canadian Touring Car and holding the track record at Toronto Motorsports Park for a long time.  Sasha owns and operates OnPoint Dyno which provides dyno and tuning services to shops and race teams.  He uses Dynapacks as his dyno of choice as they are mobile and very consistent.  From our testing we found them to read about 5% lower then most dynojets.

One of the first cars we put on the pods was a Project that many of you are likely familiar with by now, Project Blackout owned by     @NBK;. The car was already street tuned for the setup and was running very well, however we wanted some numbers and fine tuning done.  This car has been making amazing power with the setup it has and will only get better with the future additions planned.  The setup is simple in design and uses quality parts throughout which is part of the reason it is making such great reliable power...the other being an awesome calibration from Sasha.

We built this 2011 Subaru WRX after the owner experienced severe mechanical boost creep with the Stage 2+SF Intake setup on his VF52. Mod list is below, tuning is conservative and the dyno is reading 5% lower then normal Dynojet numbers.

This 2009 Subaru STi was brought to us by the owner after coming by to discuss his car a few times.  The vehicle had previously had a ringland failure and the motor was built at another shop for him.  Now that the motor was broken in and seeing others around him upgrading things the owner decided it was time to push things a little harder since he had the bottom end to do it.  We put together a nice setup that would give him a good power increase with headroom to grow into it.  He has plans to eventually go rotated with a bigger turbo but for now he wanted to stay stock location.   The car made easy power, the limiting factor right now is the stock top mount which was holding it back.  The TMIC will be replaced by an ETS FMIC kit and ETS Equal Length Header very soon!

Project Blackout back on the dyno to make some more power and get tuned on 94 and 94 + Meth.  Previous dyno plot is posted above.  Dyno was still reading 5% low at this time. Torque was kept low purposely due to the stock motor and rods, there's a lot more torque on the table with a built motor.

2 weeks ago we took some time to do a quick test on a 2015 Subaru STi that client brought to us wanting to extract more power from it.  We were very curious to have first hand information regarding the new 2015 STi as we have seen a lot of stuff posted online but it is much easier to validate directly.  Having driven a few 2015's the car feels significantly faster out of the box then any previous generation STi that I have driven from 2004-2014.  With that in mind we spent our own time to do this testing so that we could provide this information to all of you.  We first put the car on the dyno 100% stock and did 3-4 pulls to check for consistency.  After the first pull we were pretty floored by the numbers, the car made 269 Peak HP and 272 Peak Torque.  This is about 40 HP more then we saw previously on a stock 2010 STi that we dyno'd.  The peak numbers were quite good but as you can see in the plot the power is not smooth and the boost was very wavy as well.  This can be felt while driving the vehicle and is something we've become accustom to with stock Subaru tunes.  The most likely reason for the power increase is a slightly larger turbo and/or the tuning strategy used.

We then reflashed the car with the latest COBB APV3 stage 1 91 octane map.  The reason it was done on the 91 octane map was to confirm safety and the owner of the vehicle was flying and we could not get confirmation if he had filled the car with the 94 octane we had requested.  When the customer arrived we did find out that the car was filled with 94 octane so we may have gotten a bit more HP from the stage 1 dyno but we were mainly looking to see the differences between the different setups.  With the stage 1 map loaded we did multiple pulls and ended up with around 317 Peak Torque and 255 Peak Horsepower.  So we gained a huge chunk of torque but the COBB map is actually more conservative up top and makes less horsepower.  You can also see that the low end power band has been smoothed out over the stock map.

Once we completed the above testing we were quite curious to see how much power could be safely extracted from this 2015 STi with the upgrades planned.  We rolled the car over to our lift and proceeded to change out parts.  We installed an Invidia Catted Downpipe, Invidia Q300 Cat-Back, AEM Intake and Grimmspeed 3-Port EBCS.  This is essentially a Stage 2+ Setup with the addition of the EBCS for precise boost control.  Once complete we rolled the car back and let Sasha at OnPoint do his thing for a few hours tuning the car.  As always Sasha did a phenomial job tuning the car and the graph speaks for itself.  Target boost was set to 18.5-19PSI and when it was all said and done the car made 310WHP and about 345WTQ.  There's probably a bit more power left on the table but when we started getting to 350WTQ we decided to call it a day since the car only has around 5000KM on the clock.  For comparisons sake, we did a 2013 STi earlier this year with an SF Intake, turbo-back and 3-port BCS and it made 295 Peak HP and 330 Peak Torque. Something else to note is how much lower the boost threshold is with the turbo-back and intake installed.  It looks like it takes about 300rpm less to reach the same amount of boost compared to stock. Overall we're very impressed by the new 2015 STi, out of the box it is a great car but there's still power left on the table while maintaining a good margin of safety as well.

One of our long time customers with a 2008 WRX was dyno'd and really is one of the funnest OEM turbo cars.  The car has been a long term project seeing changes and additions along the way.  On the street and on the track this car is a blast to drive, it's so fun that even Sasha wrote a nice article about it here - Laines 2008 WRX : OnPoint Dyno  Dyno was still reading 5% low at this time.

Below is one of the first BRZ/FR-S cars we did a forced induction system on.  The owner wanted something with low maintenance, simple installation/removal and a decent bump in power.  The dashed line represents when we first installed the kit on the car, at that time the only modification was a cat-back exhaust which really didn't add any power to the car.  It was also running on Shell 91 V-Power as the owner preferred that as it reduced the "chirping" of the fuel system.  After enjoying the car with the new power he wanted to give it a little more power so we suggested eliminating the biggest restriction to making power which is the stock header.  The factory header is EL and designed well, but it has a cat on the end which really restricts flow as well as creates a lot of heat.  This is great for emissions but not good for making power.  We got a Tomei EL header for him, added a wideband bung and installed it on the car.  We also asked him to switch to 94 Octane as Sasha thought the 91 octane was limiting ignition timing.  We initially installed a smaller pulley on the S/C and it didn't seem to help much at all, so we removed that and actually gained power since the S/C was now running in it's proper operating range.  With meth injection or something to cool things down the smaller pulley would help with the added boost.

This has been a long time coming but I'm happy to finally be able to post this up and help all my fellow 2015 WRX owners with making decisions on increasing the power of their cars.  We took a methodical approach of adding 1 part at a time and doing a basic tune for each part so we could see the change each piece made.  Thanks go out to OnPoint Dyno as always for providing us the dyno and tuning expertise.  Before going further I want to make a note about how to look at dyno's and understand things.  With so many graphs floating around the internet it is very important to remember that every dyno is different and although I cannot speak for others it is imperative for us to show REAL results with no tampering.  While in some cases this produces less then "jaw dropping" numbers it is reality and we prefer to be up front and honest.  The first point I want to make is looking at peak numbers.  It is important to look at this as a percentage change and not as just a number.  A 100WHP change between 200WHP to 300WHP is a 50% increase in power but a 100whp change between 300-400whp is a 33% power increase.  The second point is to look at the area under the curve and not just the highest point on the graph.  Making a high number that only occurs for a small 100rpm area is not as useful as having a nice broad power band.

With that out of the way let's get to the meat and potatoes of this post!  We started off with a baseline for our 2015 WRX so we had a starting point to compare to moving forward.  To say the least the results were a bit disappointing but from driving the car it was definitely lacking in the powerband department.  It has a nice quick spool but the power is low and you can feel it.  The only upside of this is at the track it gives you extra time to relax and less chance of getting yourself all out of shape with lots of power.  We then installed the COBB AccessPORT and used their Off the shelf 93 Octane Stage 1 Map.  As you will see this made a noticeable increase in power and torque pretty much everywhere with a really big increase in the lower end torque.  The results ended up being about 6% increase in horsepower and 12% increase in torque over stock.  Not bad for a simple reflash right?  Side notes to this are that the OTS map made the car much smoother to drive.  Power delivery was smoother, rev hang was gone and overall this is almost a necessary thing to do much like on the 05-09 Legacy GT that had the hesitation issue with stock mapping.

This was great but we knew there was more on the table and so we had Sasha of OnPoint Dyno do a custom tune for the car.  While it would be ideal to have done a full pro-tune for each mod we made the decision to have Sasha spend enough time to make the car safe without pushing the car to the ragged edge.  Normally tuning takes 2+ hours but we spent about half that time which means there's more smoothing to be done.  After the pro-tune we were very very impressed by the numbers and it shows why a custom dyno tune is very much worthwhile for these cars!  This took our percentage increase up to 15.5% horsepower and 14% torque.  And just for reference we had a graph made showing the difference between Stage 1 OTS vs. Stage 1 Pro-Tuned.

While doing the Initial dyno tuning we also did Turn In Concepts TGV Deletes which were very easy to do.  It shouldn't take even an inexperienced person more then 1.5 hours to do these.  With the EJ Series the TGV Deletes required full removal of the intake manifold which is a very involved job and was costly.  In this case it is very quick and painless to do the TGV's on the FA20DIT.  When we first did this in February we ran into an issue where the COBB Pro software was not saving the codes being turned off so we ran the car with the TiC Provided OTS map.  After some back and forth with COBB the code issue was resolved and we were able to do a quick tune for the TGV's ony.  While there are many skeptics on the internet about these I think the dyno results speak for themselves with this mod.  Power and Torque is up pretty much everywhere especially in the upper end as you'd expect.  With this mod and custom tuning power went up 21% for horsepower and 20% torque over stock.  The TGV alone compared to the custom tune without made gains of 5.7% horsepower and 5.3% torque which is pretty amazing!

Our next step was to quickly install the AEM Intake System on the car while it was on the dyno.  While some will claim to make horsepower our results do show otherwise with the intake in this step.  With that said the intake will help once the biggest restriction is removed from the system which is the J-Pipe (2015 Downpipe).  Regardless here are the numbers, the boost was all over the place but overall power was not made with this mod in the state the car was.  Ah well though, it sounds better and looks better IMO then the factory airbox.

Here's a 2003 Subaru WRX that we did a Blouch 16G turbo, External Wastegate and supporting mods on.  Made pretty decent power for the little 2.0L, definitely much much quicker then the stage 2 set-up with the TD04.

Continuing on with the power stuff we next added a catless Killer B J-Pipe and Intermediate Pipe to the car.  As with most turbo cars the exhaust is usually one of the biggest restrictions to making more horespower and torque.  Like most Killer B products the J-Pipe fit pretty much perfect and the quality is very good.  The most difficult part was removing the factory J-Pipe to Turbo nuts/Studs which we've seen before pose big issues.  We had to really heat up the studs with our torch in order to get things apart and we'd recommend either having new nuts/studs or replacing the studs with bolts when doing this job.  Once that was out of the way the new pipes went on nicely and with the supplied graphite gaskets were able to seal up with the factory cat-back system.  One thing I noted while doing the install is the factory cat-back does not have the typical resonator in the mid-pipe like previous generations.  There's a resonator in the intermediate pipe which we replaced.  Upon start-up this became very apparently as the exhaust was very raspy and hollow sounding.  The turbo/induction noises were cool but ultimately it was not what I wanted and we already had a cat-back on the shelf for the car but wanted to add that after. While doing this we also removed the second restrictor pill as noted by COBB's map notes to try and help boost control. On to the important parts, we strapped the car onto the dyno and let Sasha at OnPoint dyno do his thing.  As expected the car made more power, we saw an increase in torque of about 15ft/lbs and horsepower increased by around 25WHP compared to with the TGV and Intake alone.  This brings our overall increase from stock up to 33% Horsepower and 26% torque.

The spikes in power you see are caused by the boost control system and rather then spending time messing around with it we had Sasha get it relatively safe since we had a Grimmspeed EBCS, different J-Pipe and Cat-Back to install before final tuning was to be done.

Here we have a 2002 Subaru WRX with a JDM Version 8 swap in it running the factory twin scroll turbo.  We installed Tomei Equal Length Headers and a Tomei downpipe connected to a cat-back system.  The power numbers aren't jaw dropping but this set-up is quite quick and having such a wide rev range makes it really easy to drive on track.

Awesome numbers for the 2015 WRX. Is it possible to overlay an STI with similar mods on the same graph to see how the FA20 compares to the EJ25.

Probably not, OnPoint is already annoyed with how many comparisons I asked for already lol.

OnPoint Dyno tuned this 2012 STi for us that we installed a COBB Catted Downpipe and 3-Port EBCS on.  The car maintained the factory cat-back and intake as the owner just wanted a little more power and wasn't ready to commit to a cat-back yet.

This 2011 STi was tuned previously and came back after adding an External Wastegate Set-up to the car. Pretty healthy numbers for a car with a stock header on it. With a good equal length header peak horsepower should go up to 300-310WHP.

Today we have this 2011 Subaru STi that came to us with a bunch of issues from previous work done somewhere else.  After fixing up the issues and making sure the car was safe to be tuned we put it up and had Sasha do his thing.  The car was initially tuned on 94 Octane and then the methanol injection was added for more power.  Meth is a great way to make more power and improve cooling however you must carefully monitor the system as any failure in it can have catastrophic consequences.  Based on the point where this set-up meets boost threshold Sasha felt the motor likely had been rebuilt with lower compression.

Below we have the dyno for the car affectionately known locally as "1BadSTi".  This car came to us with a bearing failure and we proceeded to rebuild it with an upgraded bottom end as well as adding TGV Deletes and a Perrin FMIC.  The FMIC is overkill for the stock turbo but the plan for the car was to go rotated turbo in the future.

This 2010 Subaru Legacy GT came in for a dyno tune after we installed a downpipe on the car.  It already had an upgraded FMIC installed but otherwise was pretty much stock.  This car was the first version with the under-mount turbo location for Subaru and as you can see it reaches boost threshold extremely quick!  Future plans for the car include a cat-back and EBCS.
