Bad Beth... '13 Ducati Hyperstrada
« on: March 17, 2015, 07:06:39 pm »
So I figure why not create a build thread for my newest toy.  Originally I was looking at the new Ducati Scrambler as a fun run around town bike that was cheaper to insure than a sport bike... Then at the past Edmonton Motorcycle Show those plans changed after I sat on the Scrambler and it felt too small, followed by the Hypermotard SP which felt too tall, then the Hyperstrada which felt just right...

Without further adieu let me introduce you to bad Beth.  She's a 2013 Ducati Hyperstrada that I recently acquired new from the dealer with 1 km on the clock.

Modifications won't be too extensive, but I still want to keep track of them along with maintenance activities.

11 March 2015,

Picked her up from Argyll Motorsports

13 March 2015,

Installed some Ducati performance LED rear turn signals

Before:

After:

16 March 2015

EVAP canister removal.  Only reason is because when I went to go fill the bike at Shell I noticed the bike was creating a vacuum condition inside the fuel tank because it couldn't vent properly.. From reading online it was determined that the EVAP canister is the culprit, and it turns out they were right.. The moment the EVAP hose was disconnected I could finally remove the gas cap.

17 March 2015,

Today I decided to recreate the tank graphics on a 15 Hypermotard SP.. So, with the SP parts costing over $1500 from the dealer, or vinyl costing $20 bucks and some time... Why not go the vinyl route.. Cause heck.. If I don't like it after a month, I can always peel it off.

Such an awesome bike dude, I like the look of the LED signals in the back and the vinyl! Are you planning to chop that big fender off, or keep it.. for function! :)

Only way I'd get rid of the tail is if I had a low plate mount that could act like a mudguard.. As it sits right now, the not so tidy tail is stopping a lot of mud/moisture from being thrown on my back... But I still get covered regardless :(

Drove down to Edmonton, blind sided by the snow storm.. Glad the AS/3 tires on Harmony held up reasonably well.. anyways, on with more progress on Beth

Installed the metal reinforced "Racing" hand guards replacing the old plastic fail guards (posted above).. I tell ya, this kit is was well put together.. Only improvement that I'd offer is a refined wiring harness attached... but what do you expect not everyone is OCD..

During a blink cycle.. and man these things are BRIGHT

Also, while I was there threw on the OEM heated grips.. again this was a very well put together kit.. Ducati could've saved some cash by not including the throttle position sensor.. but I guess that's how this company does it.. all or none.

And, I'm very sad to report.. but this Termignoni exhaust was DOA... Leave it to DHL to break a 2g exhaust

New Evotech Performance radiator and engine guards arrived today :D  So naturally I had to install them asap.. I tell ya, EP doesn't fluff around with their parts.. the fit and finish of the parts is the best I've seen from an aftermarket manufacturer.

About the damaged exhaust, the dealer is looking into sourcing a replacement unit.

That is one shmexy bike!

Just how much "hooliganism" does it encourage?

That Evotech guard is a sweet piece of kit!

The nose comes up pretty quick if you turn down the traction control to almost off due to the engine producing so much torque.. However you're not gonna run with a true 200 lbs supermotard on the track because the engine on the Ducati is a load bearing structure unlike a dirtbike which the frame takes all of the load.. but.. it does sport bike speeds, it is EXTREMELY light feeling (turns in blazingly fast), which makes it a perfect urban assault/mountain twisties/pass any sport bike in a corner toy.

Well I mounted the broken Termignoni exhaust.. dealer will be ordering another one that I'll exchange with this one when I have to bring it in on the 1000 km service.. Also, while I was working on the tail of the bike, I color matched the rear grab handles.. I think it looks a lot better than the flat black tail section.

More updates.. Added the Ducati Performance alarm system which works seamlessly with the factory immobilizer and I also added a Shorai LiFePO4 battery to Beth today.  While I could've installed the alarm without a battery replacement.. I would've had to remove the underseat tool kit.. Which really didn't make sense to me.  Why would you have a bike you can tour on, that you can't carry simple hand tools to even replace a headlight bulb.

So with the new battery being physically smaller in size (yet more powerful) meant I now had room to tuck the alarm module away out of sight.

Started with both bateries side by side and started adding some foam to equal the dimensions between the two;

Add the alarm module;

Where the wiring tucks into the battery box

Then button everything back up.. Now, the alarm works perfectly and you cannot tell it's there.

Added a few new parts to Beth..

DP Carbon Headlight Fairing p/n 96980231A, which I have to admit isn't as good as the factory screen for keeping the wind off your body, but it does quiet down the whistling that was happening in my helmet at highway speed which was a pleasant surprise..

DP Carbon Belt Cover p/n 96980221A.  Because.. well.. sexy..

DP Top Case p/n 96780121A.  Have to admit, it's a nice addition.  If I'm just going to the store, post office, wherever I'll put this case on before any of the panniers.. why.. It keeps the weight centered, I think it looks better, and best of all, I don't kick it when I get on/off the bike.

And yes.. I found out you can fit a lot of stuff in the top case.. probably to the point were I was probably overloading it slightly.. :p

Yes, that's a turbo charger, injector set, and a boost control solenoid... lol

What's a beak?  ???

The plastic piece under the headlight that sticks straight out.

I think.
If the sea was vodka, and I was a duck.
I would swim to the bottom, and drink my way up.
But the sea isn't vodka, and I'm not a duck.
So give me the vodka, and stfu.

:o ohhhhhh.. I see.  I don't think it would look very clean without that fairing piece on the front (IMO).

Haha, thanks.. however I don't think I'll be giving Beth a nose job.. but it is pretty funny, because when I first laid eyes on both Harmony and Beth, I thought the exact same thing... "WTF were the designers thinking... they put a pig-nose/beak on the front of this car/bike.. that is so ugly.."  Now, I think it adds character to both and I wouldn't change it.

:o ohhhhhh.. I see.  I don't think it would look very clean without that fairing piece on the front (IMO).

You would be correct, it looks like poo when you remove it... plus, as an added bonus, you actually affect the airflow to the engine resulting in power loss all across the board.  The nostrils are part of the air intake system.

Added a few more parts a couple days ago..  Received the replacement Termignoni Exhaust, this time the finish actually matches all the other Carbon on the bike, and best of all.. there's no damage.   ;D

DP Carbon Heat Shield p/n 96980251A.  I think it compliments the Carbon Belt cover and Termignoni Carbon parts on the slip-on nicely.

DP Garmin Zumo350LM Satellite Navigation System p/n 96680111A.  Have to admit, it was a beautifully put together kit, it came with absolutely everything for the installation on the bike including the upper bar riser for the standard bars or oversized bars, vibration dampers, plug and play wiring with the bike and extra mounts so I can use the unit in Harmony.

Lastly, I got the bike in for it's first service at Argyll Motorsports.  I was worried that I might walk out of the dealership with a pronounced limp.. Instead I found Argyll excellent to deal with. The parts department so far has been excellent, everything I've ordered arrived within a week, usually from Italy.  The service department that day was excellent as well.. They "helped" unload the bike from the trailer, and offered to help load it afterwords.. They completed the 1st service and activated the heated grips right away. Actually the tech delayed going on lunch to get the bike in/out as quick as possible because they knew I was from out of town.  I walked out of the dealership impressed.
