Spent the last two hours struggling to get the damn subframe lowered and no matter what it keeps cocking and won't come down evenly.

I will never attempt another clutch on jackstands.

You're holding the subframe with wood (near the center of mass), extending the subframe bolts the stated amount, and then slowly lowering the subframe until it touches the bolt heads, yes?

Not exactly...

We actually had the engine hooked up to the engine crane, and had the crane supporting the weight of the engine while we lowered the subframe.
I did find your video on youtube when I googled s2000 subframe (lol), so Im thinking that would be the way to go next. I would like to try that tonight.

Part of the reason we had problems is the subframe was coming down crooked, and it was binding on itself I think.

We would have been had I know we had the whole FSM.  I was working this whole time under the impression that we only had parts of it.

Honda FSMs are stupid good. I was like "pff FSMs suck we don't need one, just find me a web tutorial with pictures" but I was so wrong.

Mazda and Subaru have a lot to learn.

Mazda/Ford and Subaru FSMs really are bad.

In a Toyota fsm, that page would be one line: "lower the front subframe".

In the newer ones, yes. In the 80s Toyota manuals, they tell you how to service absolutely everything.

In my eyes, everything else in this FSM is like that. This is the only part of the FSM that went into any kind of detail.

Nope we had major struggles and turned around. The subframe just would not come down properly and we decided if we had fought and fought and fought so far it might get worse so we put it together, did everything else other then cosmetics and will probably leave it until it's either slipping noticeably or fails completely, then pay someone to do it.

When the time comes, I will recommend my mechanic (Dale Spooner).  He has done this job a lot now :)

S2000 is back together now, and some much needed maintenance items have been addressed:

Mileage: 135,000-ish km's
  • Took months of struggling to get to point of lowering the subframe. Struggled with lowering subframe. (even after following FSM procedure.) Premeditated that removing the bellhousing bolts and separating the bellhousing from the engine would be a complete nightmare.
  • Took 2 nights to re-assemble everything and fire the engine back up :)
  • Skunk2 aftermarket catback replaced with single-exit "custom" catback with removable supertrap exhaust silencer. Old catback coming up for sale shortly :P
(Reduces drone on the highway, and saves weight)
  • Oil and filter replaced with Mobil 0W40 oil and OEM Honda filter
  • Drained radiator and added some new Prestone coolant
  • Replaced Transmission fluid with OEM Honda transmission fluid
(Old transmission fluid was very dirty)
  • Replaced diff fluid with OEM Honda Diff Fluid
(the diff fluid that came out was a gray-ish/blue colour. New OEM fluid was a dark red/brown colour ???)
  • Clutch fluid and Brake fluid was flushed and replaced with Endless DOT4 brake fluid that has been kicking around from a previous project :P
(Old clutch fluid was BLACK. Brake fluid was not much better.)
  • New Fast wheels with chunky 245 RE11's installed. Car lowered off jackstands.

Car is now insured and back on the road. Nothing like some top-down open road driving in February :)

Car needs just needs an aggressive alignment, and maybe a polish and it's all set!

Really pleased to get this thing back on the road even though the clutch job didn't go as planned. Feels good getting all the all other stuff done, just needs some cosmetic work now and a clutch eventually. Maybe some new race rubber pending if we even get a auto x season this year.

135020km back on the road for 2016  ;D

Yeah signed it over for $100. New job is a big paycut and I really don't need three vehicles as I'll be driving company vehicles most of the time too. Saving $400/month between payment and insurance isnt a bad thing.

maybe a polish

I want to do it so bad. The paint is so ravaged, just seeing the before and after would be reward enough.

Yes it would be nice to have the paint polished however I have absolutely no patience for polishing and don't really want to spend race car budget on cosmetics. It may or may not happen.
