Today's work!
  • Replaced cracked third brake light lens and non-functional third brake light bulb
  • Some spoiler cracks repaired with hockey tape
  • First grocery run!
  • Broke speedometer
  • Temporarily repaired speedometer with exotic foreign lube, shop towels and anger
  • First gas fillup!
  • First car wash!
  • First honking at Mercedes SUV that didn't see me in the middle of an empty uckfaying street I mean come on it's BRIGHT GODDAMN GREEN LOOK WITH YOUR EYES OR GO BACK TO GERMANY YOU PIECE OF itshay NAZI

Today's new problems!
  • Speedo something something doesn't work sometimes. Works now, but who knows when it will die.
  • Rhythmic thumping noises coming from rear wheels are more concerning in the daylight for some reason, stereo still non-functional so cannot turn up to drown out
  • Broke off two of the four studs pulling the spoiler in order to replace third brake light lens. That itshay crusty.
  • Probably needs an alignment, maybe tie rods?

I know it's a front wheel drive and all, but only two wheels seems like it's trying too hard to make the point.

Jesus Christ man, how have you not supercharged this, jacked it up on 40 inch mudders, installed some sort of Mad Max-esque offensive AND defensive scrap, and converted it to run on bio-diesel yet.

Worst. Thread. Ever.

I was worried that would happen as soon as I saw him comment. I'm psyched but the timing is terrible.

Won't get much progress done on the car in the next little while. On Wednesday night my younger cat, Julius, died suddenly in my wife's arms from what we think was a genetic heart failure. He was only a year and a half old, but he was my little buddy and the house feels so empty without him.

RIP little buddy :(

Im sorry about your cat SSS.

I remember when my cat passed away. He was 17 years old and having some health issues, but that was still very sad to see him go. I had a dog who suddenly passed away at a pretty young age of 3.5 years, I know how hard it is to suddenly lose a pet at a young age :/

Sorry to hear about your loss. Losing a pet, whether expected or not, is always difficult. It's crazy how they can become such a large part of our lives.

I went by Gordon's shop today to get out of the house and while I was there, we chucked the Civic on the lift.

Here's all the new stuff we found.

  • Inner tie rod on drivers' side is pooched, probably so is the boot
  • Three out of four shocks are leaking suspension sauce. Front left shock is in mint condition.
  • Rear left drum brake is so far out of adjustment that we spun the wheel on the lift and it was still spinning freely 20 minutes later.
  • Rear right drum brake makes a horrible machining sound when spun in a similar way, barely moves. I had assumed this was wheel bearings and already ordered some pricey rear Timken hubs so I might just send those back. God I hate drum brakes.
  • Oil pan leak is probably all of the finger-tight M6 bolts holding it to the block. When I say finger-tight I mean finger uckfaying tight. I was able to spin one of them on with just my pinky finger. Torqued to "not going to fall out" ft-lb.
  • Alternator belt is dry-rotted pooched even though the alternator was (according to the PO) replaced twice in the last year. New alternator is a clear garbage-quality reman because it has surface rust everywhere.
  • Probably all rear control arm bushings are pooched
  • Probably all front control arm bushings are pooched
  • Probably all trailing arm bushings are pooched
  • All motor mounts are pooched, one is torn
  • Fuel filter is probably the original
  • Needs front rotors
  • Really needs front pads

Mostly I just wanted to know why the car decided that bump-steering my steering angle from "30 degrees left please" into "90 degree right directly into a curb" on my trip over there was acceptable.

Gordon was the one who wanted to be all professional and make sure I didn't die from something else.

Also, for reference: the speedo still doesn't work all that well but if I floor it off the line it works fine. It's only when I pantywaist it off the line that the speedometer immediately goes to 75 and sticks. I think wheelspin probably makes the sensor bounce enough that it clears off whatever grit is sticking to the hall effect.

Today is the 3rd time I have been on the front page of Jalopnik, though I'm really sad it wasn't from those little kei trucklets.

Sooo, what you're telling me is that you're leaving your job to be the next editor in chief of Jalopnik? Staging some sort of coup?

I'm mostly really curious when they start talking about giving me money.

Because I bet I can count it against the budget for the car.

(Rather than just his civic build thread)
