I can't say anything about banff, but jasper...

I stayed here about 3 weeks ago.

Nice cozy place for cheap. Their restaurant is down for remodeling, so you have to walk into town for food.
I spent 90 bucks, gave me a loft suite, kitchenette, fireplace.
Dogs are allowed FYI, just have to tell them ahead of time.

If you want to spend the bling, then JPL.

Even with my so called "corporate deal", it was going to be about $250/night.

The hot springs in jasper is Miette Hotsprings. Nice place, about 25km outside of jasper, so it's a drive.

I stayed at Patricia lake, in the cabins, but they are closed as of October. It was fantastic, nice kitchenette, great lake, nice place to hike\walk.

Patricia lake is FANtastic.
I stayed there in summer. Very nice place.
Unfortunately, correct, not open during winter.

I stayed at the Juniper in Banff for a bachelor party. It was pretty freaking nice and very accommodating.
