If there's an office behind me in the drive thru and I'm paying with my phone, I'll pay for their drinks too ;D ;D and then I'll still get pulled over and I'll cry...

From my experience dealing with people accused of various forms of wrongdoing, everybody lies or over exaggerates or bends the truth is some respect. I have a very hard time believing that all he did was tap his phone, and that was enough for the cop to get out of his car, walk over to his window, and engage him in conversation. That sounds nuts on the cop's part, and despite the opinion that is sometimes expressed on here, my experience has been that cops aren't nuts.

... my experience has been that cops aren't nuts.

Coming from a small town and knowing nearly every cop on payroll, I can tell you they're insane for choosing a professional babysitter career ;)

Jokes aside, the officers I know, are the most patient (very rarely not the case), down to earth people who actually give a damn about someone else's safety and well being. A little quick at jumping to conclusions, maybe. Who isn't, though? But as Haplo mentioned, tickets are very rarely written without a cause.

Plot Twist...

Quote
That may sounds a little drastic, but according to local RCMP there are a few details left out.
“Of course when you hear one side only you think, are you serious?” Cpl. Tim Dunlap said.
“There’s a little bit more to the story than just him sitting there minding his own business and getting a ticket.”

Quote
(the) member who handed out the ticket saw the man driving and texting before he entered the drive-thru
“He was going to pull him over, but the guy got into the drive-thru so he thought… I’ll leave him be,” said Dunlap.
The unit member decided to also get a coffee and entered the drive-thru, which is when he saw the alleged bad behavior continue.
Dunlap said while in the drive-thru the man was seen texting with two hands above the steering wheel, while moving forward. At that point, the officer felt “compelled” to do something, and planned to give him a verbal warning.

Quote
“The guy was very abusive verbally and gave [the officer] the finger,” Dunlap said.

“Because of the way the conversation went the officer decided, ‘you know what, I’m not going to give him a break after all, I’m going to give him a ticket.'”
According to officials, it didn’t end there.

“The gentleman was driving forward, looking behind him through the back window giving the finger to the officer, meanwhile not looking forward he drove right out into oncoming traffic blindly.”

The man’s exit manoeuvre could have snagged him another ticket, Dunlap said.

What a fool...  ;D
With this, I'll consider it reasonable to continue using my iphone to pay for my drive-thru' Timmies' etc.!

I'd want to see the dash cam evidence of that... I can't believe someone would be stupid enough to get a verbal warning, then give an officer the finger multiple times after being let off.

Maybe in 'merica.... maybe.

* This is the part where Haplo comes in and relates stories of people being exactly that stupid...  :D

I saw this on another board:

Quote
Hello, Since everyone appears to be itching to get my story, here it is in it's entirety. I'm a very introverted guy, all of this attention is extremely stressful for me. Anyway. I live and had worked (literally got laid off Yesterday) in a small town called Beaumont in Alberta. The town has been plagued by photo enforcement and generally bored small town cops. It doesn't take long to find someone in town that has had a sour experience with them, even my mother is afraid of driving in this town thanks to the overzealous enforcement and some people refuse to patronize the town at all because of it. Anyway, I was on my coffee break, I had just ordered coffee and was texting back and forth with a friend. I was moving along with the line and was about 2 vehicles away from the pay window at the time an officer approached me. He asked me for my licence and to pull into the parking lot after I had ordered. So I once I was through I pulled into the parking lot adjacent and stopped. He pulled up to me and asked for my insurance and registration and I handed both to him and already annoyed and said "go hard". He sat in his car, wrote up my ticket obviously not interested in issuing a warning, once he got over to me I lost my temper. I first asked him why this was happening, he simply stated the law at that point with no further explanation. I called him a useless pig uckfay, I'm pretty sure I asked if he seriously felt he was helping anything, at no point have I ever denied that I lost it at this point. As I was leaving, I pulled in front of the strip mall Dairy Queen going no more that 5km/h and flipped the officer off. Unfortunately for me he wasn't looking, so I honked my horn to make sure he saw. If he saw me on the phone before hand of truly felt I was a danger to others, he didn't say anything of the sort to me at the time. This will be copied and pasted as my official response, originally sent as an email reply to Niki Anastasakis of Global news Toronto around 9pm MST on December 1st, 2015 AJ Daoust

Hasn't his story changed? I thought he initially said that he only tapped his phone, now he's texting back and forth. He also initially said he "may have been rude" now he's admitting to being a oucheday bag.

If he can't keep his story straight then obviously his testimony is bunk.  Deserved what he gets then.

Hasn't his story changed?

Maybe?

I thought he initially said that he only tapped his phone, now he's texting back and forth.

From the original article:

"A.J. Daoust says, after he replied to a text message while waiting for his coffee at a Beaumont, "

Article makes no mention about being a dbag.

He also initially said he "may have been rude" now he's admitting to being a oucheday bag.

From a CBC article:  http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/tim-horton-drive-thru-text-nets-287-fine-1.3344991

"Dumbfounded, Daoust said he struggled to keep his cool."

and

"Once he gave me the ticket, I was absolutely livid. He got an earful from me."

IMO, the story changed a bit depending on the news source.

Still... always buy coffee for the officer behind you in line at the drive through.

Because it's _always_ in their discretion to give you a seatbelt, distracted driving, or any number of tickets since the drivethrough is a highway with all the same laws applicable.

If it's Tim Horton's, I'd take personal offence to that.

Starbucks though...

Non fat extra sweet double pump vanilla latte with 3/4 of the whip cream, extra hot.

I actually think that's a legitimate drink.
