Mounted the Firecawks™ (trademarked by Flaming Roosters Racing) in April at 160509km...

After 4 autoX events (And ~35 runs) and 12502 km...I have cupped the tires. I got a fresh alignment on Monday the 25th, all things within spec. I realized after I should have asked for a little bit of front camber, if they could have managed it, but I decided to keep it at 0deg static. Boy.

What a mistake.

jellynuts and I co-drove the WRX today and we decimated my LF tire. So much so, that after lunch, you could feel definite cupping on the outside shoulder blocks. We did a quick front-rear swap right before grid was lining up with two scissor jacks. (Thanks RTP and RB93 for your help, NASCAR litAF). I aired the tires up to 40psi all around to mitigate tire rollover, it seemed to help.

Something I can take away from my runs, especially with two drivers, especially with my car setup as it is, you have to monitor your tires. After all, I'm asking for a uckfaying lot from my front tires.

Of interest:
RockThePylon's setup on the Firehawks is different; he has XL rated sidewalls in 18'' fitment, I do not. Also, he has sways and springs, he does not roll as much as I do.
My street driving is spirited and I run a little higher street pressures than door sticker - 34/35 f/r is usually where it's set.

Onto pictures of my tires. Footage to follow this post when I get it all, I got so much today while on track.

Left Rear (formerly the Front Left)

Left Rear (formerly the Front Left)

Front Right for Comparison

Keeping in mind my previous post shows what the shoulder blocks used to look like, prior to Sept. 15th autocross event. Zzzzzzoooooooooiks

Onto other news, I did an oil change earlier this week, oil sample is enroute to Blackstone Laboratories for analysis. I saw a few small flecks in the drain pan again, double sigh.

Lets not jump to conclusions.  Maybe you had a dirty oil pan.

I won't claim to be very sensitive to driving positions or butt dynos, but I did have a hard time adjusting to your car in the first couple of runs!  It's all kind of hazy, but the morning run where I brought home the cone, Gideon Style, I think I lost my footing and hit the clutch instead of LFB.  Maybe your footage can answer that.  Also, the steering felt much different.  What's the difference in the ratios?  STI is 15:1 and WRX is 16:1?  Whatever it is, it felt totally different!  Or perhaps it's also that plus the combination of sway bars and suspension?

But all that's moot!  I had a tonne of fun and learned a lot about driving.  Your car is a lot fun, but the company was what made the day!  Also, the crazy wheel swap was fun too, I had already forgotten about that!  And failing at Chinese accent for Conrad's gf.

LOL, A+ for effort though. I nearly had to turn around just to hold it together.

FWIW your bbt suggestion was a hit.

True. I always clean the pan fairly fastidiously. Fingers crossed. STi has a quicker rack, yep. And...racing with you Jonny, you gave me real feals.  ;)

In other news, after seeing seat safety switch's 03 TS's strut towers and what sorcery GrantC is planning, I decided to take apart the interior of my wagon as well to assess the strut towers.

MAN ALL OF THIS DUST!!

Cool, I can see the seam sealer they used. You can even see errant brushstrokes. Note the one random rust splotch on the rearward part of the tower .

Hmmm. Yep. It's starting. Grant, Matt, SSS, et al. what do you guys think? I'll take more pictures when I wire cup this biznitch...seems to be starting on that ridge where seat safety switch described.

Passenger side doesn't have anything yet, just very...very dusty.

I think I caught it in time. I'll clean the wheel well side free of any undercoating and try to rust convert what I can from the underside. I'll also try and rust-convert the stuff from the inside, hopefully I can get the stuff to flow in between the panels. Then, liberally brush POR-15 like it's going out of style. After I clean all this dust up and make this thing ready for paint, lol.

Also, my rear quarters are also starting to rust, per usual. It's easier to see from the inside. Neat.

It's surprisingly...not that much louder in here. Not that my exhaust is loud by any means...what I notice is road noise from the tires. And when the wastegate opens. Wooooooow. Wooooooooooooooooooooosh
I could get used to this.

Man, it's not too bad but bad enough :(  Good luck mang. Glad you got started in this before winter!

Also, while you're at it, might as well change your fuel pump ;)

I'm too nervous to look at my strut towers.

Gonna pull off those seat latches too?

When Cole and I tore down my GF8 we found the rear quarters and strut towers were absolutely completely rust free other than rock chips around the edge of one wheel well. I guess maybe the JDM cars really do have a easier life on the roads over there vs our road conditions?

My '97 OBS didn't have the same rear wheelhouse rust (but it had rust in other places). I think this might be an 02-07 wagon thing.

Yeah, it looks like the rust has definitely started on your wagon :(

You might be able to get at it early enough that we'll learn something about how it spreads, I guess. How many clips did you break pulling the rear trim? That big tall window-surround piece near the back was the scariest part for me.

Do it... commiserate with me. I'll pull the seat latches and clean up the seam where the steel layers meet. Re-attach the latches and seal around them outside and inside.

SSS - Yeah. I didn't break any clips on the window surround surprisingly, I did however destroy almost all of the black-post clips and the white receptacle clips that held the carpet+foam around the towers. And no matter how gingerly I did it. Plastic shrapnel. Everywhere.

Yeah, I broke at least a few of those little square guys. Trim clips suck.

Before I bought the Saabaru I pulled the rear seat and looked around for evidence of moisture leaks or rust. Found none, so I'm guessing it's at least as bad as yours, maybe worse.

Do it... commiserate with me.

I looked down from the flap on the strut top... Good lord, it's a mess. I can see salt crystals.

I'll pull the interior at a later date when I've got time to do some abatement.

Just sways - stock springs, blown struts. The 1/2inch less sidewall is probably negligible.

I think my maxed out camber does more for tire wear than anything.

Update: I went to town on the driver side tower with a wire cup with the help from a neighbour who also brought his angle grinder.

It begins...

Oh? What do we have here? Added a little more pressure... the one spot at about 7 o'clock has disappeared, interesting. But the one on the right around 2 o'clock...bubble bubble (butt)

I took a little screwdriver to the small rusty brown pinhole spot and gave 'er a few taps. Then whacks-stabs. Didn't go thru... I think it's too big to drill out and tack-over...but I'm no body guy. Suggestions for plan of attack? Worst case it's a small cut and weld repair around the area.

Rearward part of the strut tower.

Same kinda thing as above.

Tangent: Automotive archaeology. 50cents CT money? BALLIN!!! I've also wiped some oil over the bare steel so it doesn't flash rust as quickly.

So, it's not truly perforated. Which is a relief. I didn't attack the passenger side as it appears intact with no bubbles, but I didn't examine closely. A job for tomorrow morning.

PSA: Anyone with a GG wagon, Impreza 2.5i/TS/WRX/9-2/9-2 Aero, 2002 through 2007, check your strut towers for the cancer. You too can maybe stop/slow the spread.

What does the outer shell of the wheelhouse look like?

Sorry for the delay SSS...see the pictures below. Wherever the circular cutouts are for the outer skin, behind it, is the inner skin, and I can see where water/salt would sit and begin it's work...

Enhance, Mr. Wolf:

So, based on my untrained eye, that brown spot is the inner skin rusting. Could just cut out the inner skin, grind/clean up the backside of the outer wheelhouse, weld?

Conversely, Exhibit B: Passenger side. The same latch holes had a little bit of rust staining I knocked off:

And Exhibit B1: The same circular cutouts on the wheelhouse, appear to have maintained their undercoating spray - they look OK. I'll definitely strip and re-coat the biznitch.

I've talked to Felix @ Artisan Autobody, he has a few ideas on what would work. He's done glued in replacement panels on fenders/quarters before, but if it's structural he said he would weld. Neat guy, he looked at the car and liked that I've raced it haha. It's clear he loves cars as much as we do. I'm gonna get some more pictures and fire them off to Felix and discuss a plan moving forward.

I think you're getting a little carried away.

There are so many wagons with such crazy amounts of rot, that drive/race (e.g. LW1.0) around on the daily with zero issues.

I'd clean it up, seal it up, and forget about it.

While it may not be a show car, it's still a WRB Hawkeye wagon. I'd be carried away too.
