New and old oil coolers. The Summit Racing in-house brand oil cooler is a very good value proposition for $145USD. The quality looks on par with the more expensive Setrab, and it is quite a bit bigger!

As some of you have already heard, the tune was aborted yesterday, and I am on the hunt for a short block. The goal is to get the car back on the road ASAP, so I do not miss out on the entire track season that I pre-paid for.

While on the dyno, the tuner noticed excessive oil vapor escaping from the valve cover breather, to the point that it was considered a safety concern. After data logging, and a brief assessment of the current tune and engine, I was told the following:

1. A few tables that are normally untouched by most tuners were modified; that includes the MAF scaling table, and I have stock MAF.
2. Data log shows ECU was pulling -30% correction to hit target AFR;
3. My injectors are rated for 60lb/hour at 43.5 PSI fuel pressure, and the injector scaling table was indeed set for 60 lb/hour. However, LS engines operate at 58 psi fuel pressure;
4. The black smoke and black marks on my rear bumper confirm the car was running quite rich; PO stated he noticed this since the first time the previous tuner tuned the new engine the first time around.
5. The excessive fuel was likely constantly washing off the oil from all cylinder walls, and the cylinder walls and oil rings were worn down prematurely;
6. Since the LS3 was stroked and bored out to make 6.8L of displacement, the block is unlikely to be salvageable with a hone and new rings.

Disclaimer: I do not know enough about engine tuning to comment on whether the tune caused the premature failure. My new tuner did not spend enough time to fully assess the entire tune to gather all facts and add things up.

The only fact we need to know is, the current engine is damaged, and I am looking for a new engine.

The engine removal may start as early as this weekend if I gain access to an engine hoist. I am hoping to find a stock LS1 or LS6 bottom end, transfer all accessories and parts over, and get back on the road in 2 weeks.

 Sorry about the terrible news. I would say just go big and build the motor but getting it up and running ASAP is a good goal.

Thank you all. I honestly feel relieved about it, now that we have some expert opinions on an issue I have been chasing down.

I have narrowed down to a couple of engine options, and will likely pull the trigger on one this weekend. The current LS3 block will be sitting on a stand till off season. If we confirm that it is rebuildable, it will get rebuilt and either sold or get put into the next project. If not, I will have a cool coffee table or wine rack (except I don't drink...). I think the stroke crank and rods will fit into whichever engine I choose, so there is a good chance that we get back into the 6L+ zone next season.

This has been a positive learning experience for me.

Found a 77000km LS1 for $2100 in Calgary. Drove down and got it back today.

Only took about 20 minutes to tear it down. Everything looks great.

Not much carbon build up on top of pistons.

Cross hatch marks still visible on cylinder walls.

And Wasp moved on its own power with its old heart for the last time today. This will be its spot till the transplant is complete.

Do you have a forklift to get that motor in and out of that thing?  It also looks great in the back, like, you should give up on the Corvette, and find a way to mount the LS in the back of that SUV(?).  2 motor awd beast sleeper or, rear motor rwd wheelie monster.

We didn't have to use a forklift. The engine felt like somewhere around 220 lbs, so a couple dudes were able to lift it in and out of the SUV pretty easily.

We will see how much of the stroker motor is salvagable. If it is rebuildable, we will mount it to the back of something.

Would not recommend this technique with an iron block. Been there done that.

Put in 3-4 hours last night.
- All fluids drained
- All sensors disconnected
- Headers removed (what a pain)
- Accessory drive removed
- Valve covers and rocker arms removed
- Driver side head removed
- Steering rack ready to come out

I think another 2 hours, the engine will be stripped down to bare short block and ready to come out.

Side note: now that I know what to look for, I can see that the cylinder walls have some vertical wear marks, and the cross hatch marks are worn off in some spots.

Put in 2 hours last night
- Both cylinder heads are off
- Front sub frame lowered
- Steering rack removed
- Crank bolt loose
- Water pump removed

Next, hook up the engine hoist, take off all bell housing bolts, and short block will come out!

All parts are ordered (gaskets, seals, and TTY bolts). Since we are switching from a Gen IV stroker engine to a stock replacement Gen III engine, the current cam wouldn't work too well. So I ordered a BTR stage 2 cam (227/234 0.614/0.576 113LSA) from Davenport. This cam should get me a fairly broad power band from 2700-6000.

The LS1 started up last night. This unexpected engine swap project took a bit of effort, but it was fun and rewarding. I just wanted to say that nothing quite explains the excitement or the anxiety during a project of this type. I try to do everything right to the best of my knowledge at this time, but there are so many things out there to be learnt, and so many things could go wrong. Something as small as an unseated oil pump O-ring or an under torqued bolt could cause significant damage and/or send the project back to the drawing board.

Congrats on the swap. I know the exact feelings of excitement and anxiety associated with a swap like this. I can't wait to see this back on the road, tuned and on the track.

Thank you! If tuning can be done within the next 2 weeks, that will give me time to prepare for any (or all...) of these track days. I will most likely use the ASA day as a shakedown, for the longer sessions of CEAG. I really hope to see you and other WSC members at the July 21 ASA event.

You made good time with this! How was it for room around the engine bay?

And you're right, there's no feeling like the initial start up after a swap.

Thank you. I did ok with this one. I did run into a couple of issues during the process, and had to do more research or scramble for different parts. I could write a short summary if anyone is interested. The project definitely helped me identify my knowledge deficit and future directions. If I was to do this again, I could do it much quicker.

The engine bay is not bad. The long tube headers are usually super hard to install. I dropped in the short block first, dropped in the headers, then installed the cylinder heads. I hope I don't need to remove the headers for anything again... It would be very difficult with everything else installed in the engine bay.

Car is finally tuned. Made 413 HP and 395 torque to the wheels. Still chasing some O2 sensor issues. Going to give it one more try with new sensors and a different wiring harness extension. So happy to be driving it again.
