^^ I'll say.

At least you happen to live in the same city as the official SAAB recall center. That's a bonus...

When 05LGT was service advisor at a GM dealer in calgary, he had to redirect the SAAB owners who needed the recall work done to that shop in edmonton, telling them there was nothing they could do here in calgary :P

I am glad I'm in Edmonton, and hopefully they truly are ready by March 20th. I'm just surprised it took this long. I don't think the previous owners would have been contacted; another Linear owner I know in Calgary said Takata just issued a new set of recalls that included the 06's. And he's mad he'll have to drive up too.

Looks like Tik-Tok was prophetic with the airbag recall after all:
Edit: Make sure you get the airbag recall done, there's only one place for us Saabaru's in Alberta, and fortunately for you it's in Edmonton.
It seems weird to me that they didn't just call all of them in from the start, and waited years to finally get around to these models.

Ahh, May. Weather has warmed up just in time for me to swap to my summers and...blow my clutch.

Well it was inevitable for a 200k+ car, just was hoping I could get into slightly warmer mornings for the bike ride to work first. It's still driveable but it really needs to be done now. I also have some leaks that will be much easier to take care of when the engine is out, so I'm thinking of pulling the engine to do the full clutch job. Plus, there's a bit of history with me and tranny crossmember bolts (see Moron, Torque Wrench).

What do you guys think? Is that a reasonable way to go about things? I wouldn't be in a rush, and I think I know what to do:

1. Order clutch, flywheel, other parts I might as well replace. Wait in anticipation and refresh package tracker hourly for 3 weeks.
2. Rent engine hoist from some generous WSC or Kijiji soul ($50 - $100?) for a week
3. Drain fluids.
4. Call in favours and present beer to attract people to my garage. Remove engine (my first time, 4-6 hours?)
5. Replace clutch. Replace seals that I might as well replace since it's easier now than upside down later (thoughts?)
6. Start cleaning things and give up after an hour
7. Drop back in (2-3 hours?). Replace fluids with new shiny fluids.
8. Beer and profit

This was roughly the process I used on my old Cherokee (though I was 18 at the time and had help from a Jeep and helicopter mechanic) so I think it will work. I'd budget myself 10-20 hours for the entire process.

What are some "might as well replace/check" things that I should be thinking of? I suppose I could/should do the timing belt because Subaru. Just new to this engine so I'm not sure what else I should be considering.

If the engine is out, some things to do in no particular order are:

- turbo banjo bolt
- secondary air injection system
- oil pump
- timing belt
- spark plugs
- coil packs

...Basically anything since this engine sucks to work on.

I don't know who you're going to for parts, but give k_Lx a pm.  He works in a shop in Red Deer but can ship parts to you for competitive rates.

A lot of this stuff is a lot easier (or non-existent) on an NA.

I'd be checking for oil leaks and if you're pulling the engine doing things like rear main, filter housing, valve covers and oil pan seals / gaskets. Timing belt for sure if it's not been done.

Yup. Thankfully. Thanks for the input, guys. Seals and gaskets are cheap so I'm basically just going to do it all - good chance for me to get familiar with this engine.

My RA shopping list looks like this:
Luk clutch/flywheel w/ repair sleeve (remember this is a budget/fun car I plan to have forever)
FelPro gaskets - oil pan, crankshaft, timing cover, camshafts,
Dayco timing kit w/o pump (pump was replaced <40k ago along with belt, but why not)

All in all, <$600. Not bad. I know timing was done recently but I feel like the peace of mind is worth it to do it again...

FWIW, When I did my sister's car I didn't use an actual gasket, just RTV sealant. I don't know if there is an OEM gasket for that location.

Well slap me silly and call me... That's what they meant by "conversion" kit. You, sir, may have just saved me $$. Though for $40 the kit comes with all the other seals I could possibly want, so I might stick with it.

Oh, I'd never suggest to turbo it.  I just assumed it wasn't NA.

Don't worry, didn't think you would. I've read enough about it to know to just save $$ and wait...so very tempted by that Aero for sale in Edmonton but that'll never fly with the wife. Something about shingling and not 'needing' a new car...

Parts ordered and on their way! Now to just find an engine hoist once they arrive. There's a huge one sitting outside a staircase at work, and I'm very tempted to see if anyone would notice if it went missing. But I'm pretty sure I'd need a flatbed to move that out.

Update: after some wife-mandated landscaping and gardening delays, the engine is finally out and I'm having second thoughts about my decision to not do the head gaskets. I mean, I finally got everything out and they're right there...

But all said and done I suppose it won't be as hard the next time around? Or should I just bite it and replace them anyways...

I didn't need all these years of engineering to tell me that this bearing is not what it should be. Though this will make an excellent teaching demonstration this term, along with the snapped pistons from my old Cherokee.

That was my throwout bearing. It's now on my desk at work. Nice and crunchy; I teach on bearings once in a while so this will be a nice piece to have around.

Ah wow.

Yeah that stuffs neat to see. I wish I hung on to my cracked clutch fork.
Just had a blower rebuild at work and didn't notice till the last minute but it had been spinning one of the lobe bearings for a while and had worn a perfect groove in the case
