Singallz's GTBRFRZ86S Scioyotabaru build
« on: July 08, 2016, 12:08:11 am »
The Overview:
I needed a winter car (yup sideways is how I spend my winters) so I bought a 2013 Scion FRS, BRZ, GT86 or whatever it's called lately for 16k, my goal is to spend only as much as one of these things are new (used car + parts = 31k total) to make it handle/perform as well as the car next to it so I don't drive it in the winter like I did most of last year.

The Plan:
I bought a ton of parts, took a week's vacation, and I'm going to spend it working in my garage mod'ing the crap out of this car. My goal is to try and post progress every night this week with each mod I add/install (starting Friday).

Many, many photo's and updates to come. (I guess you can say it's my version of Stampede week)

Here's a taste of what's to come this week:

@Admins since this is technically a Scion (although every panel in the car has "subaru" stamped on it) I'm not sure if you want to move this to the "non-subaru projects" area, but I'll leave that up to you.

uckfay yes, I love it. And yes, aftermarket heaters should be in the budget.

But the sea isn't vodka, and I'm not a duck.
So give me the vodka, and stfu.

So day #1 update, did a wash, wax, tint, rebadge, and a roll.

This actually took way longer than I thought it would, but taking off the Scion crap took a ton of time. However it was totally worth getting rid of the failed brand

After they were off I waxed it up and then got the windows tinted this afternoon

Then rolled the fenders to get ready for the new rims/tires UPS stole lost. I'm really hoping this wasn't for nothing.

Much more to come, which may or may not include bum warmers.

Thank you for putting the proper badges on. It disappoints me how few people have rebadged them.

Its funny its not an option for these cars. I think most people would check that box after going to any auto show and seen a Scion booth. Its as if their branding teams said: "what do those Millenials like? the hip hops? the #hashtag?"

So happy that brand is dead

So day #2 and it's exhaust day!!

It's a Perrin 3" cat-back with a massive resinator which almost travels the length of the car. The thing that interested me in this kit is that it's using clamps to fasten each pipe. It's something I figured I'd try and also hope doesn't rust away as fast as bolts and gaskets usually do. One thing I can say for them is they made adjustments and alignment of everything simple, easily, and the best fitting kit I've had yet.

So far in the garage it's not too loud but the ultimately I won't know for sure until I drive it on the highway and either love it or hate it.

Now on to making this thing handle

I helped a buddy install a Perrin catback onto his 2013 FR-S a few years back. It sounds fantastic, and isn't too loud at all.

Stampede week mod all the things vacation day #3 and more aesthetic things, because I'm waitin on parts

It's a TRD style rear lip which I had colour matched (looks pretty good even in the sun) and was pretty simple to install, but took forever to get right. In the end I'm pretty happy with the results:

Where'd you get it paint matched?

So day #4 of the Stampede week build, and it's the day I've been dreading since starting. (WARNING: removing the rear wheel bearings produces nightmare fuel)

I got a set of ARP studs because my front break setup will require spacers during the winter with my OEM wheels. Overall this was the one part of the project I've been dreading since the rear studs require you to take the bearing assembly right out of the wheel carrier and through the drums. It's a 3 year old Calgary car so that means RUST! This took 6 hours to do

ARP studs, way longer than the stock ones but the bolts are long too so it all works out

This tool makes the job a slightly less sucky, it has a bearing on it so it rotates as you tighten and it pulls the stud in perfectly

The fronts were easy, just pound out the stud and rotate the hub to the area without the protection disk for the next one

The rears were not so easy with the wheel bearing assembly being fused to the wheel carrier

Did future self a favor and lubed this up good with anti seize

On to the "funner" stuff tomorrow

Day #5 the "joint" day

I'm lowering the car which that means messed up geometry, this Whiteline kit helps to correct that by re-aligning the control arms and steering to compensate. They actually work well too, on my little GC8 it made all the difference. However this time around I'm thinking it won't be enough and I might have been better off with the Buddyclub version (time will tell).

Time for the press to pay for itself

Day #6, front suspension day (finally the fun stuff)

Its a set of Ohlin street/track coilovers (SUS MP20) with FRSport's top hats, 22mm Whiteline sway and endlinks, and grimmspeed strut tower brace. Looks pretty sweet and I can't wait to install the rear stuff tomorrow

So pretty I almost don't want to put them on

Also as a bonus they weigh 3 pounds less than the stock setup so less unsprung mass too

Are you planning to actually run the AP brakes through the winter? From the research I found that seemed like a bad idea and I am pretty sure Orrin removes his for winter driving?
I don't name things I know I'm going to sell eventually. Hence why I'd never name any kids I had.
