Are you planning to actually run the AP brakes through the winter? From the research I found that seemed like a bad idea and I am pretty sure Orrin removes his for winter driving?

Depends on the pad you use and how much heat they require to be effective, not the calipars or rotors. But I'm keeping everything so I can swap back if needed.

This does not look like a winter beater build.  ;D

Truthfully I do have another car for the worst of the snow but I absolutely hate driving it (98 civic).

The funny thing about winters in Calgary is that most of the time the snow on the ground disappears with the chinooks and then you're left with gravel covered roads till June which I'm not driving my Cayman on (I know insert first world problems meme here). So if this next winter is anything like our last one I'll probably be driving the FRS a ton.

Even last winter in Edmonton was mild enough that I was considering something similar!

Day #7, the rear suspension took way too long due to stubborn fused bolts on the old endlinks and sway-bar mounts, but suspension is finally done.

Whiteline swaybars and swaybar mount braces installed, also buddyclub lower control arms which help with camber and geometry correction

Whiteline diff bushings installed (This was actually really really easy to do)

Before you do much driving, I recommend swapping out the washers on the endlinks to nice thick washers instead. The washers that came with my whitelines were so thin and cheap that they bent and deformed, resulting in slop, noise, and damaged end links.

Day #8, brake day (DONE!)

Installed the AP Racing calipers & Essex rotors, DBA rear rotors, Ferodo DS2500 pads, and new tail-lights (because euro style lights are so 90's). Also this is the last post of my version of Stampede week, it was fun not to think about work and wrench on this car, maybe next vacation will be forced induction. Now all that's left to do now is wait for the rims & tires to show up.

This setup is almost identical to my Porsche brakes, you just undo the center pin and you can slot in new pad's in under 2mins. To take off the calipers you just undo 2 bolts on the top of them and you can pull the rotors in 2mins.

Honestly Essex racing has the best documentation I've ever read, clear, tons of picture, and lots of good tips (like depress the brake peddle to the floor and put something there to hold it so fluid doesn't leak)

Rear DBA rotors and pads on (took awhile to find these, most places have none left)

Valenti tail lights, they have a little switch on them that allows you to have it pulse the turn signals (looks almost like a light bar off a cop car, somewhat cheesey so I shut it off). That said the OEM tail-lights were looking like the ones on MCM's "too-sexy" car so they had to go, these are a massive improvement.

She's a beaut. I love how you focused on suspension and improving the handling over just boosting the car for more speed.
This thing should be a blast to corner, and I rode in a BRZ with the Perrin exhaust through the mountains, the same one Jory helped install it on. The exhaust is awesome, quite tame, not drowny on the highway, but opens up nicely on full throttle.

Thanks man! For me power is secondary to weight and cornering, these little cars were designed around that concept at their core, so why not try and refine those features.

Also with this car's high compression engine and terrible heat management its almost like the designers actively tried to prevent power enhancements.

The real question is wheels and tires.

Soon, but think light & sticky

So what you're saying is they're not the exact same thing?

All the RR-faced Enkei series are pure sex.

Good choice. I'm particular to the gtc01rr.

Shamelessly post your own photo dude.

Scott, if you bought the same size as me they're too heavy to go fast and they tramline a bit.

I went with a smaller width up front (8.5) to try and deal with tramline, but for weight they're not all that different from Enkie's other light-weight rims (i.e. RPF1's)

RPF1 18x8.5 = 18.95 lbs. (reference)
RPF1 18x9.5 = 17.40 lbs.

RS05RR 18x8.5 =18.12 lbs. (reference)
RS05RR 18x9.5 = 19.29 lbs.

Plus they look absolutely awesome.

RPF1's are functional, but everyone and their cat runs them. RS05RR's suit the GT86 perfectly imo.

So it's finally done with enough budget left over to look into forced-induction, but that will not happen for awhile.

Final shots of the car with its RS05RR's & Michelin Pilot Super-Sports (Front: 18X8.5 - 245/35 Rear: 18X9.5 - 255/35) and they JUST barely fit over the AP-Racing calipers. I also corner balanced the car to the best of my abilities (almost took all day).

With my limited driving I can honestly say (and no alignment till tomorrow):
  • I love the exhaust, not too loud, not drony at all
  • Holy itshay this thing can stop on a dime but it squeals like a mofo (bedded brakes per instructions, maybe it'll get better with some time)
  • Handling and Ride is amazing, it's pretty close to my Cayman
  • I love how it looks! Just the way these should have come from the factory
