2017 Formula 1

It's that time again for:

Rathburns Formula 1 World Championship Extravaganza ThreadTM!

Big rule changes this year, aero and tyres being the biggest among them. No Germany this year either. Rosberg retires, Massa un-retires, Bottas joins the Germans, a Canadian back in F1, and Manor is, or maybe isn't a team again for the umpteenth time.

The other big change is the loss of our fearless leader Uncle Bernard. Seen here in the official FIA picture:

2017 Schedule:

1     Australian Grand Prix - Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit, Melbourne Australia 26 March

You can update that fancy table with the date for Manor: never.

Subbing to this thread.

I'm excited for this season to get started. Here is my contribution to the thread courtesy of Red Bull. Cool video :)

I will also be in Europe from early July to the end of August/beginning of September this year, and am hoping to get the opportunity to be either in Hungary for the Hungarian Grand Prix, or at Spa for the Belgian Grand Prix (I am leaning towards Spa). I have a few friends in Switzerland who want to join me, and one in France who is also potentially interested. Any recommendations on which one to go to, what ticket packages, what corner/area to sit in would be much appreciated :)

Maybe I can make it to Gilles or COTA this year.
If the sea was vodka, and I was a duck.
I would swim to the bottom, and drink my way up.
But the sea isn't vodka, and I'm not a duck.
So give me the vodka, and stfu.

Nice video. I suspect that most of us have been following along and will be pretty aware of the changes, but a little refresher is always good. Red Bull tends to put out some decent content to get people more interested.

SPA! There is no other choice. Unless that choice is Monza.
Or Monaco.
Or Montreal.
Or Suzuka. But I've been to a race there already.

Been to Monaco, experience is phenomenal, qualifying is big, race is so-so.
Been to COTA, venue is great, race was ok, but potential to be good.
SPA though....if you're there, go. No-brainer.
Heard Montreal is for the books too, BYOB, and walking the track after naturally makes for a good time.

Looking forward to the pre-season testing getting started soon. Honda & McLaren sound confident in their engine this year, so it's just a matter of how good their aero is (and reliability). Would be amazing to see them fighting again. I'll be surprised if Merc isn't the leader at the start of the season, but I'm hopeful that the gap will be greatly reduced. It'll be interesting to see if fuel becomes an issue, since they'll be able to stay on power through more of the corners this year.

Also really excited to see what ideas Brawn comes up with to simplify the rules in future seasons and improve the competition on the track.

Done. Spa it is.
I need help finding a good place to be at Spa though.... Do I just get the general bronze, sit on a lawn chair, and make my way wherever I want? Or do you guys think the extra $$$ for gold grandstand seats is where it's at?

This review here has been somewhat insightful, but I am still up in the air of how much I want to spend on this. Im leaning towards just going all in on it. Gold 1 Fri-Sun.

Being across from the pits and seeing how quickly they can do what they do in person is very impressive but repetitive. I'm not sure on the cost difference but I would be inclined to recommend Gold 8 if it's an option as you are on a corner and able to see accel>decel>accel on a sharp corner which is highly technical/exciting (imo).

Man..La Source... First lap carnage followed by watching then speed up the hill.

I'd vote that or Gold 3 so you can see what downforce looks like haha.

Gold 10 would be pretty awesome too -- good uphill perspective and watching the cars change direction at huge speeds around eau rouge. I THINK you'd have enough elevation to still get a good view of La Source and the straight too. Hard to know for sure though, and I know those tickets aren't cheap. If you end up just going with bronze, I'd try to get right up to the top of the hill at the end of the straight by Les Combes. Historically lots of overtake attempts there.

Gold 7/8, you may be able to catch some passing action at the hairpin, then watch them scream up Eau Rouge and maybe see someone make a pass like Webber on Alonso!

My only gripe with bronze on that track is the fact that it is fairly spread out and hilly, which would probably mean long times to walk from spot to spot if I move around :(

In other news, RedBull released this video recently:

I got goosebumps and shed a tear all that same time.  Love the new McLaren Livery!

Also, I think the Russian race is April 30th, and the Spanish race is May 14th.
