Cobb Stage 1 91 Octane OTS map with Shell 91 E0 compatible?
« on: February 04, 2017, 05:58:16 am »
Hey guys, I currently always gas up my 17 WRX at Shell with 91 Octane. Pretty sure the 91 Octane that Shell offers does not have any ethanol in it. Getting an Accessport soon and I was wondering if the Cobb Stage 1 91 Octane maps would be compatible with this gas.. Or should I switch to Husky's 94? Anyone have any experience running the Cobb Stage 1 91 map with 91 octane fuel?

Also saw this on Cobb's website:

Thoughts?

If I remember correctly, in Alberta, you should be using the ACN maps. I'd recommend running the 91 maps then run with shell. According to airboy's dyno tests, shell and husky gas are both good. You can always run husky 94 on a 91 map and be ok, but never the other way around.

Or at least that's to my understanding. Someone correct me if I'm wrong

Apparently Cobb does not offer the ACN maps anymore. Don't have an AP yet so I cannot confirm. I guess the normal 91 map would be okay to use then?

You should be fine using Shell 91 on the 91 OTS maps.

Funny you should post this...

So, I put my AP 2 weeks ago or so. Stage 1, 91 octane.  Car ran fine for 2 days. Then I was on E - So I filled up with my regular 91 Shell,  then as I'm leaving the gas station DAM drops .875. Then .675. Then Knock and such was dropping down past -1.41, saw like -3.5 at some point.

So maybe a bad tank of gas?

I let that tank run thru and drove to Canmore, then it was back to empty. Filled up Husky 94 at the house (which is what I used in my GC8 religiously) - DAM back to 1.0 ever since and no knock. (Been 4 days straight).

Interesting.

Anybody have real world experience or thoughts on Petro Canada 94 Octane?

Every Petro up in Edmonton carries 94.

Not sure about Calgary.

I strictly stick to Husky 94 based on Airboy testing and recommendation. I tested the Cobb 91 and 93 maps using Husky 94 and experienced no knock.

Hmm once I get my AP, I'll try running mine on 91 Shell and see how it does. If DAM drops and I get knock, might have to switch to Husky's 94 as well. I'll let you know of my findings

I heard Airboy did some dyno tests on 91 Shell and 94 Husky. Do you know if he uploaded his findings on a thread here somewhere on WSC? Can't seem to find it with the search bar.  :-\

My two cents based on experience. For the first 13k Km I ran nothing but Shell 91. Computer fuel economy for that mileage on Shell 91 was 10.5L/100Km however, my tail pipes would always turn black after a day or two of normal driving (aka staying out of boost). Every tank of gas with Shell was a gamble as some tanks the car would run like its currently running on Husky 94 while other tanks it felt like it was struggling in normal city driving. Shell 91 is different depending on the batch you get in all honesty.

After the guys at Vex Recommended running Husky 94 over the Petro Canada I can honestly say that the consistency is exactly the same on every single tank so far. When compared to Shell 91 and Petro Can 94.... fingers crossed Husky is actually better and I just haven't been incredibly lucky so far :D

I asked Sunny about PetroCan's Ultra94 versus Husky 94 when I had my car tuned and he said Husky 94 is the way to go because although they both contain "up to" 10% ethanol, Husky's tends to be more consistent and ends up being a better gasoline to tune for.

I very much agree, after running all 3 fuels, Husky 94 is by far the most consistent I've seen so far.

34k kms (at least 10k of those are stage 1) and climbing on Husky 94 and I have zero complaints.
