GrantC's Winter Beater Beater? [Baller wheels]
« on: June 11, 2017, 07:23:29 am »
So, I got a new winter beater beater and project.

Let's pick up from here.:

Using parts off of this:

High on the hubris of this: http://www.westernsubaruclub.com/smf/index.php?topic=52852.0

To replace this:

Purpose of this car:
-second Subaru in winter
-rallyx
-winterx
-gravel roads
-oh hey, TSD is a thing, right?
-doing wagon things like transporting a wheelbarrow.
-seeing why everyone is such a fan of wagons
-owning an N/A Subaru.

In an ironic twist brought on us facilitating each others our cross-city kijiji shopping I have some silver bugeye fenders in my backyard that seat safety switch had me pick up for him.

So I've even got parts laying around for it!

We'll see how much, or how little, of the interior goes back in.  Of the cars in my garage this is the most truck like so it might just be bare rear of the seats...

Godspeed little shitbox.

Trying out this cupholder thing...

First mod, I know the PO had a high opinion of his painted Forester steelies, but I don't think the wheel locks are warranted.

Just beater car things.

Backside of the right hand strut tower is free of surface rust.

The front, however...

Automotive archeology time!

I wanted a second winter car that wasn't 1WD.

Inside:
  • Grind off surface rust on the back, paint.
  • Grind/cut out rust on the front till good metal.
  • Neatly remove front half inner from the parts chassis.
  • Plate over top & stitch/plug weld all over.
  • Paint inside with "silver"
  • Cover wheelwell with so, so_ much undercoating
  • Reinstall seats.

Outside:
  • Cut out rusty fender lips
  • Cut out good fender lips from donor chassis
  • lap/butt weld on
  • paint with silver-ish paint.

We'll see how close, if at all, that ends up being.

I used Rust Bullet for my car, it is already silver and should match pretty well.

https://www.rustbullet.com/
The 3 is raw.  Lighter than more agile.  The 6 probably feels like a 747.  And by that contrast, my STI probably feels like the Hindenburg.  So GR's are like the International Space Station.

I'm glad I just left all that crap in the back, especially that soccer medal. There should be about 36 cents in that car.

Look out because the previous owner really liked pins. I found so many sewing pins in the interior of this car when I first got it, and a few more when I pulled that rear seat for the first time.

I tried the Tremclad(?) aluminum paint on the wheel wells and it was a pretty good colour match but as you can see it did not slow the rust down one bit nor could it be topcoated with anything else.

Man, I don't know what type of teenage girl the PO of this car was...

Probably had their grad tassle, or a cut glass hummingbird or something dangling from their mirror.

Fixed.

Who's a naughty little car that loves some hot gravel e-brake action?

I did some stuff with it that's entirely a non-issue with a wagon, but impossible with a sedan.

Discovered the "surface rust" on the rear of the shock tower is coming from the wheel well.

(so the scope of the parts being plated over just increased)

Got tired of having to pry the cupholder out of the dash with a pocketknife, so I re-engineered it so it springs out again.

(plastic pin that it pivots around snapped off, replaced with an m5x0.8 machine screw)

Then, even though it was a factor rather than "the cause" I threw away all the wet foam that goes under the interior panels.  And, since I wasn't going to be making/fixing this car to be stock or ST legal I made myself feel better by scraping all the sound deadening off the floor of the hatch.  Then when I realized some of the holes covered by the sound deadening went right outside of the car, I covered those with gaffer tape.

No, the OEM ones.  Rear subframe & above the fuel tank.

Mod of the day.

Had to drill out the hole at the bottom where the fender bolts to the sill, and then impact a new m6x1.0 bolt in there.

And forgot the transfer over the grommet that locates the headlight.

"good enough".

Minimal, other than the head of the bolt snapping off.
