The Redoo Too - Project Fukushima
« on: June 12, 2017, 03:08:59 pm »
My Subaru inventory has changed since the Teh Fonz.
I didn't document it because the hope would be that there would be no need for documentation.

...and here we are.

It started with The Shitbox.
It was a huge shitbox that I sold in a fit of rage immediately following the clutch giving out during stop n go traffic on the Hendaybahn.
Good thing I did, it threw a rod less than 1k after I sold it.

Shitbox Redux
I decided to try my luck again, as I was still in need of a winter beater.
I have the subaru curse, but I also have the subaru curse.
Some stuff happened, then it started knocking a bit louder than I was comfortable with, and it too went up for sale.

Then I went through a BMW phase. I'm sorry about that. It won't happen again.
Probably.

Primary decision in 2017 was to buy a Fiata.
Secondary to that, I would need a winter beater.

Thus, Shitbox Redux 2.

It is not without its own issues.

(a literal lug nut)

Lots of rust.

A Super Professional tint job.

A crying pressure sender.

Not to mention several 13mm bolts on the car where there should not be 13mm bolts, a bad HG job, broken clips all over the entire engine...
So, a typical subaru.

Ohhh, I get it now. You're into that weird subset of S & M where you're Dom controls all your finances and continues to make poor financial decisions relating to cars, and then makes you get all dirty trying to fix them, but they never quite get fixed all the way.

You sick uckfay.

This post is about all the boring itshay that goes on with a new-to-you subaru.

So the car needed some TLC.
It was knocking a bit, so I went investigating the usuals.

First I gathered some supplies.

Then the work began.
IACV cleaning.

Oil pressure sender.

Filter.

OEM spark plug wires rusted itshay and pulled apart.

Good thing I had a set of these from the junkyard.

Inspected the boost sensor to make sure I was getting all the boost I need.

Spark plugs that aren't one step too cold for this high performance NA engine.

Some LEDzzz (and a P0420)

After all that... the car still knocked.
So I said "whatever. It's a subaru. It's gonna make some noises."

....

I woke up one morning to this.

So I says to myself "Self," I says, "you should take your winter beater to work so that you don't scuff the paint of your new scarf car."
And so I did.

And about half way there, loud noises followed by no noises and then this happened.

Is it really a Subaru if it hasn't been on a flatbed?

I think snackers title should be changed to the gimp.
If the sea was vodka, and I was a duck.
I would swim to the bottom, and drink my way up.
But the sea isn't vodka, and I'm not a duck.
So give me the vodka, and stfu.
If you're having forum problems, I feel bad for you son, I got 99 problems but your post ain't one.

Had Ultimatt yell at me cause I wasn't being destructive enough
Disconnected heater core lines that I forgot
Listened to many MANY curse words and screaming come from under the car where someone was undoing driveshaft bolts (and getting mud in the eye)
Went under car and undid remaining driveshaft bolts with 2 cranks using the proper wrenches in half the time with only 3/4 of the cursing
Listened to Grant make loud noises with some loud tool to undo trans support, engine mounts, headers
Drained trans
Stood around while Ultimatt drained rear diff (and complained the ENTIRE time)
Grant swapped the swaybar on the fozzy rear end to a WRX swaybar
Changed the front shifter bushings on the new trans
Stood around some more while Ultimatt unbolted the shifter supports
Thought everything was unplugged and started lifting engine
Discovered not everything was unplugged and stopped lifting engine
Unplugged some stuff
Continued lifting
Discovered there was more stuff to unplug
Shook fist at shifter for getting caught on everything
Finally got engine/trans out
...
Someone thinks he accomplished something

...and then promptly went to work "being Grant" and started cleaning the engine bay
Also, at this point the car has 1gp (Grant Power) So slightly more powerful than it was before

Glamor shot

Can you believe we've been doing this stuff for >7 years?

<Project Engine Swap Template Snippit>

Perfect! I'll steal that template again.

I don't have a lot of pics for what happened, so the same format will be used with little change.

I consulted some people with experience and some people with no experience and decided to order an EJ201 to replace the EJ251.
In preparation for the swap, I did everything that is required to remove and reinstall an engine with a manifold swap.
Disconnect fuel lines
Disconnect heater core lines
Disconnect harness and all other connections to the car. Grounds, vacuum lines, many boost lines.
Remembered ALL the times I've done something similar to this on my previous subarus (and other peoples subarus)
Folded A/C out of the way.
Thanked the previous shop for using some decent hose clamps.
Folded PS out of the way.
Cursed the previous shop that replaced random 12mm bolts with 13mm bolts.
Removed intake manifold and gingerly set aside.
Drained oil.
Drained coolant.
Contemplate life and all life entails.
Removed A/C, Alt, PS pump from JDM engine.
Remove all cut lines from JDM engine.
Remove intake manifold from JDM engine.
Look at all the awesome clips and non-broken bits on the JDM IM that I won't be able to use, wish that I lived in Japan.

Work begins in this general area here.

The Heart of Fukushima arrives.

This young heart is in way better shape.

For future reference, these things go like this.

And these things go like this.

Glitter Waterfall came out of the oil pan.

Old n Busted.

New Hotness.

Spiderman.

Sex acts.

READY TO GO!!!

Thanks to Grant, #GarageOfIdiots on camera removing and inserting a subaru engine into a car.
Insertion took a record 12 minutes, fyi everyone. (looking at you, YYC)

Thus, Project Fukushima.

1. Whose enormous uckyfay garage is that?

It's a shop, the garage isn't pictured.

2. Woah, Grant haz chest and legs? When did that happen?

I don't remember making some type of faustian bargain to give up my hair for it... but looking at the pics above that might be what happened.
